National karate player molested

A national level Karate player was allegedly beaten up by a group of men last evening in North Delhi’s Burari area when she thrashed one of them for purportedly molesting her.

The incident took place in Sant Nagar area of Burari when the 24-year-old woman was returning from her Karate academy.

“The accused, a local shopkeeper who was later identified as Rajesh Gupta (28) passed objectionable comments on the girl and when she took objection, caught her hand. Being trained in Karate, the girl overpowered Gupta and thrashed him,” said a police official.

14 killed in car bomb attacks in Baghdad

At least 14 Iraqis were killed and 51 wounded in two car bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital Baghdad Saturday evening, an Iraqi interior ministry source said.

The first attack occurred late in the afternoon when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden truck into a crowded police checkpoint at the southern entrance of Baghdad in Doura district, killing 11 policemen and civilians, and wounding 42 others, Xinhua reported.

New chief of Armed Forces Medical Services takes charge

Lt. Gen. B.K. Chopra, senior colonel commandant of the Army Medical Corps, Saturday assumed charge as director general of the Armed Forces Medical Services.

Lt. Gen. Chopra, a graduate of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College in Kanpur, did his post-graduation in surgery and orthopaedics.

He was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps in 1977 and has held various regimental, clinical and staff appointments in the last 37 years in the armed forces.

He has also been appointed honorary surgeon to the president.

Man arrested for killing daughter’s rapist

A man in his 50s has been arrested on charges of killing his 45-year-old tenant when he came to know that his teenaged daughter was raped by the man a month ago, police said Saturday.

The incident was reported Friday night from Khajoori Khas area of east Delhi.

The father, whose name was withheld by police to hide the identity of his daughter, was arrested a few hours after he killed Omprakash, a resident of Madhya Pradesh.

Woman accuses DIG son of assault

Mother of a DIG level police officer today lodged a complaint with the police that her son has assaulted her.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Bidhan Nagar Commissionerate, Debashis Dhar said DIG (Border) Anirban Roy’s mother Rebeka Roy lodged the complaint with Bidhan Nagar North police station in North 24 Parganas district.

The woman went to a hospital following the assault and lodged the complaint after returning from there.

Dhar said a case has been initiated in connection with the complaint and investigation was on.

Fire damages major portion of Shimla heritage building

A major portion of a heritage building in this town, once the summer capital of the British India, was damaged in a devastating that fire broke out Saturday night, officials said. There was no loss of life.

The half-timbered Tudor style — all-wooden frames and shingled eaves — building currently houses the office of Project Deepak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), an inter-services organisation under the defence ministry.

The fire occurred in the top two floors of the three-storeyed building, a fire department official told IANS.

MLA on CBI remand till Nov 13, BJD MP disapproves suspension

A special court here today rejected the bail plea of arrested ponzi scam accused MLA Pravat Tripathy and allowed CBI to take him on remand till November 13.

Tripathy, who was yesterday arrested by CBI on charge of criminal conspiracy and accepting of huge sums of money from chitfund company Artha Tatwa Group, was produced before the special CBI court which remanded him to the custody of the central investigating agency till November 13.

The MLA’s lawyer Omprakash Ray opposed CBI’s petition.

HC directs police to file FIR in missing cases immediately

Observing that non-registration of FIR in man-missing cases often led to delayed identification of bodies, Madras High Court today directed jurisdictional police stations to register FIR immediately whenever such complaints are made.

A division bench comprising Justice S Rajeswaran and Justice P N Prakash passed the order while disposing of a habeas corpus petition filed by the father of a 20-year old youth, who drowned in sea and his body was disposed of as unidentified in 2013, seeking to produce him in the court.

Haryana CM announces remission to prisoners

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the occasion of Haryana Day today announced to grant special remission to prisoners.

The Chief Minister said that convicts, who have been sentenced for a period of 10 years or above would be granted remission of 90 days.

The convicts, sentenced for five years or more, but less than 10 years would be granted remission of 60 days and convicts who had been sentenced for two years or more but less than five years would be granted remission of 45 days, he said.

Women prefer vacations without their kids: Survey

A vacation must mean a vacation in its truest sense. A majority of Indian women have admitted in a new survey that they prefer to go on a holiday without their children, primarily due to a lack of personal time with their spouse.

The survey, was spread across Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi NCR with a sample size of 1,000 females above 33 years of age.

As many as 63 percent of the respondents indicated that they’d prefer a holiday with their husbands alone, even if it means going out of their way to make special arrangements for leaving the kids behind.

5 held for cheating Delhi bank of Rs 33 crore

Five men have been arrested here for allegedly duping a bank of nearly Rs 33 crore by taking loan from it against spurious gold in connivance with some of its officials, police said today.

The accused have been identified as Ram Prakash (31), Vijay Manchanda (55), Dushyant Manchanda (20), Satrughan Nayak (32) and Ravinder Kumar (40).

They have been arrested by the Economic Offence Wing of the Delhi Police in connection with two FIRs.

Firm employee held for stealing money while filing ATM

An employee of a private company here, engaged in refilling cash in ATM machines, has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from the cash van, police said today.

Hargyan (21), who had joined the company around one and a half years ago, was assigned the job to load cash in ATM machines of various banks on the Nangloi route, they said.
