Memorial for 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims to come up in Delhi

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today described the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as “fourth holocaust” of the community and said the upcoming Sikh carnage memorial being built by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee will preserve history of this barbaric incident.

Addressing a gathering before performing the ground breaking ceremony to start the memorial’s construction work at Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib here today, Badal said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will continue its struggle relentlessly to ensure that each guilty involved in the “heinous genocide” is brought to the book.

Nita Ambani celebrates birthday in Varanasi

Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani on Saturday celebrated her 51st birthday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi.

As part of the celebrations, the Ambanis also attended a special prayer service at Kashi Vishwanath temple in the city.

The highlight of the day was the ‘Aarti’ at the Dashashwamedh bank of river Ganges, witnessed by the Ambanis and the guests seated in four houseboats, which were especially decked up for the occasion.

AP: seven persons including six women killed in road accident

Seven persons, including six women, were killed when the car in which they were travelling ran into a stationary truck on the Denduluru National Highway in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh tonight, police said.

Eluru Deputy Superintendent of Police K G V Sarita said, the victims were returning in a Tavera car after attending a religious program at Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Ravulapalem.

The car hit the lorry near Denduluru National Highway check-post.

Six cases filed against granite firms in Madurai: Collector

Amid demands from opposition partiesfor allowing IAS officer U Sagayam, appointed by Madras HighCourt to probe illegal granite quarrying, to take up the probe, district administration today said six cases had been filed against eight persons in respect of granite blocks stored without proper permission.

Cases had been filed against P Palanisamy, P Selvi, Sureshkumar and five others belonging to PRP Granites, a leading export firm here. The stones had been stocked without proper permission in patta lands in Tirumogur village, District Collector L Subramanian said in a release here today.

Vadra loses cool, snaps at a reporter

Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra today lost his cool and angrily pushed the microphone of a reporter away when he was quizzed about his controversial land deals in Haryana.

A livid Vadra was seen on a video footage shown on TV channels asking the reporter four times as to whether he was serious about his land deal question.

Vadra had earlier anwsered a couple of questions posed by a reporter inside Ashoka Hotel.

Three youths shot dead in Meerut

Three youths were shot dead by some men at a restaurant in the Brahampuri area here tonight, police said.

The victims have been identified as Karan Chaudhary, Akash and Golu Verma.

They were sitting at a restaurant when some armed men entered the place and fired at them, said SP Om Prakash.

The three died on the spot, while another youth in the restaurant was injured in the firing, he said.

The police official said names of two accused have come up in connection with the firing and efforts are being made to arrest them.

Man sets wife on fire in Faridabad

A woman was burnt to death llegedly by her husband in Deeng area of the district, police said here Saturday.

The deceased Anita had complained to the police that her husband used to drink alcohol and physically abuse her.

Yesterday also there was a fight between them after which her husband Sanjay sets her on fire, police said.

Anita was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed during treatment, they added.

6 injured as protests erupt in France over police brutality

Violent protests broke out today in two French cities against alleged police brutality, leaving at least six injured.

Officers fired rubber bullets as demonstrators hurled bottles of acid in the western city of Nantes.

Protesters also clashed with police in the southwestern city of Toulouse.

The demonstrators were protesting over the death of Remi Fraisse, 21, who was killed last Sunday during clashes between security forces and protesters at the site of a contested dam in southwestern France.

Demonstrators want impeachment of Brazil president

Police in Brazil’s biggest city say more than 2,000 people staged a peaceful demonstration demanding the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.

Participants in yesterday’s rally in Sao Paulo claim Rousseff knew of a scheme that siphoned money from the state-owned oil company Petrobras and funneled it to the governing Workers’ Party.

A convicted money launderer has told investigators that the Workers’ Party benefited from the scheme and that Rousseff had direct knowledge of it, though he has so far offered no proof. The president has strongly denied the accusations.

Jewish leader warns Swiss museum not to accept gift of Nazi

A top Jewish leader has warned a Swiss museum against accepting a priceless set of art works including Nazi-looted paintings from the estate of reclusive German collector Cornelius Gurlitt.

Such a move “would open a Pandora’s Box and cause an avalanche of trials” by rival presumed heirs of the stolen art, Ronal Lauder, the head of the World Jewish Congress, told the German weekly Der Spiegel.

Gadkari inaugurates IDTR

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Saturday inaugurated the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) which has been set up to promote road safety with focus on training drivers to reduce accident rate in the country.

The IDTR has been set up on 15 acres of land by the city-based Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) with Tata Motors Ltd as the PPP partner in the project.

Pope hails the poor, homeless as ‘unknown saints’

Pope Francis has paid tribute to what he calls the “unknown saints” those who flee war, hunger and poverty, the jobless and the homeless.

Francis marked the Catholic Church’s Nov. 1 All Saints Day by celebrating Mass and giving a homily Saturday in Rome’s sprawling Verano cemetery.

He hailed those who are forced to flee their homes and villages to save their lives, risking hunger, illness and cold. He lamented that sometimes people regard these refugees, including hungry, ill children “as if they are of another species, not human.”

UN panel adopts landmark climate report

The United Nations’ expert panel on climate science has finished a report on global warming that the UN’s environment agency said offers “conclusive evidence” that humans are altering the Earth’s climate system.

The document, which combines the findings of three earlier reports, was adopted after all-night talks that went on until 5 am. Yesterday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Tribal language preservation project gets positive response

The tribal language preservation project, launched by Tata Steel’s Tribal Cultural Society four years ago, has not only received overwhelming response, but produced over 1000 tribal teachers in Jharkhand.

“We have started the project to preserve Santali script ‘Ol-chiki’ and Ho script ‘Warang Chiti’ with nine and six centres respectively in tribal-populated Kolhan region comprising East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan districts four years ago on experimental basis,” said Biren Bhuta, Chief of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Tata Steel.

Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent Muharram processions

Restrictions have been imposed in several areas of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent a Shia Muharram processions, police said Sunday.

“Restrictions have been imposed in Maisuma, Kralkhud, Kothibagh, Ram Munshibagh, Shergarhi, Shaheedgunj, Karan Nagar and Batmaloo areas to maintain law and order in Srinagar,” a senior police officer told IANS.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been deployed in the areas. No vehicular movement will be allowed in the areas. Although, authorities said there is no restriction on movement during any emergency situation.

Telangana State Urdu Teachers’ Joint Action Forum constituted

Rice quota increased for poor in Telangana

Govt. of Telangana has announced that it will increase the quota of rice for the poor which is being supplied to them at the rate of Re. one per Kg. While talking to newsmen yesterday after submitting the report of the cabinet Sub-Committee to the CM, Finance Minister, Mr. E. Rajender told that every family member will be supplied 6 kg rice per month. He further told that so far, 20 Kg rice was being supplied. He also informed that Food Security Cards will be issued to all the deserving families. The maximum income limit for Rural families has been increase from Rs. 60000 to Rs.

Youth acquitted of charges of raping DU student

A Delhi court has acquitted a youth of the charges of raping and beating up a student of Delhi University with the help of his sister-in-law, saying that the girl’s version is “neither corroborated by medical nor forensic evidence”.

Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat acquitted the youth and his sister in-law, both residents of Uttam Nagar, from the charges of offences under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), 376 (rape), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.

Proposal to shift military areas to Ranga Reddy District – KCR

CM of Telangana State, Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao wants military areas to be shifted to Ranga Reddy District. He desires to requests Defence Ministry to shift all the military installations from Secunderabad Cantonment. All these will be shifted to Hakeempet and Dundigal Airports. The Installations of Mehdipatnam and other areas will be shifted to Ranga Reddy District. If all the installations are kept at one place, their security could be ensured. In this manner, Govt. of Telangana will get land at prime locations to use it for better purposes.

Pensioners have to submit life certificates

Govt. of Telangana has issued the proforma of life certificate for pensioners. They are required to give the details of their pension payment order number, bank account number with the name and the branch of the bank, their present address, phone number, PAN Card number, Date of Birth, Aadhar Card Number with the latest photograph attested by Gazetted Officer or the manager of the bank. All these filled in forms have to be submitted in the pension payment office or sub-treasury office before 28th February 2015.

Minister of Education, Mr. Jagadish Reddy told that Govt. will issue notification for the recruitment of teachers very soon. Govt. intends to provide better and quality education to the people. It has decided to fulfill its election promise to offer free education from KG to PG. Govt. is paying attention to remove the shortage of teachers in the Department of Education. It will start filling up the vacant post of the teachers. He further told that in Telangana, there is better quality education than other parts of the country.
