Meeting most of the world – Modi government’s foreign policy overdrive

Barring most of the African Union countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have met leaders of most countries of the world by the end of December 2014, pointing to the heightened stress on foreign policy by the new Indian government that took power on May 26.

Modi, who set off a foreign policy buzz with invites to eight South Asian neighbours, including Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, for his swearing-in, has met leaders of many countries, including the big powers the US, China and Russia.

Indigenous n-sub’s sea trials by year-end

In a major boost to indigenisation of defence manufacturing, India’s first nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed submarine INS Arihant will head out for sea trials by the year-end.

“INS Arihant will be ready for sea trials by the end of this year,” an official aware of the developments relating to the 6,000-tonne submarine told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Caramel Custard

Ingredients

125 gms sugar

1/2 liter milk

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

2 tsp chocolate (powdered)

4 Tbsp custard powder (vanilla flavored)

Method

Caramelize 25 gm of sugar in a non stick pan with 1 tablespoon of water.

Boil on a low flame for ten minutes till the sugar turns into golden brown and cool.

Mix custard powder with 20ml cold milk (little) and keep it aside.

Boil milk and add sugar. Reduce the flame.

Now add the custard milk mixture to the boiling milk. Cook for 5 minutes till it thickens.

Hot Noodle Soup

Ingredients

1 cup noodles

2 Tbsp chilli oil

1 onion, chopped

5-6 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 ginger

1 Tbsp curry powder

1 green chilli

1 Tbsp curry paste

1 jar vegetable stock

4 tsp lime juice

1 tsp soya sauce

1 cup coconut milk

300 gm chicken strips

2 lemons

Salt and pepper

Coriander leaves

Method

For the soup:

Take a pan, let it get heated. Add red chilli oil and onions.

Add garlic, ginger, green chillies and saute well.

BHEL bags Rs 220 crore contract

State-owned BHEL has bagged an order worth Rs 220 crore for supplying an electrostatic precipitator package to a power project in Odisha.

The contract is related to the 2×800 MW Darlipali super thermal power project.

In a statement today, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd said the Rs 220 crore order has been placed by NTPC.

The plant is located in Sundargarh district of Odisha.

The contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Electrostatic Precipitator Package.

India pays tribute to indentured labourers on 180th Aapravasi Diwas

India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday paid tribute to the ‘girmitiyas’, the nearly half a million Indians who arrived in Mauritius to work as indentured labourers in the 19th century, saying their sacrifice did not go in vain as they went on to become the architects of a resurgent and confident new Mauritius.

Gujarat industries petition Pradhan against GAIL

With firms like Piramal Glass having to shut down part of their operations after gas supply cuts, Gujarat industries have sought Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s intervention to stop “arbitrary” action of GAIL that may lead to 30,000 job losses.

GAIL last month selectively slashed gas supplies to small industries in Gujarat to meet fuel requirement of CNG (compressed natural gas) and PNG (piped natural gas) supplies in cities. It, however, did not touch small users in other states.

One dead, six injured in Agra cylinder blast

One woman was killed and six people were injured when a cooking gas cylinder exploded Sunday morning in a house in Shanti Nagar area here.

At least 11 people were rescued from the debris of the two-storeyed house that collapsed following the blast.

The fire brigade reached the spot within minutes to carry out rescue operations. Police said the condition of three of the injured was serious.

Police said construction was going on in the second floor of the house. The woman was cooking food when the cylinder exploded, killing her on the spot and bringing down the entire structure.

Amazon plans new fulfilment centre in Gujarat

World’s largest online retailer Amazon is planning to expand its infrastructure in India with its second ‘fulfilment’ centre in Gujarat as part of the company’s $2 billion investment plan for the country.

According to sources, the US-based firm has approached the Gujarat government for setting up the centre next year and the firm is expected to start engaging with state government officials soon on the matter.

When contacted, Amazon declined to comment.

Mamata wishes Shah Rukh Khan on birthday

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Sunday wished Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on his birthday.

“Today (Sunday) is the birthday of our very dear Shah Rukh Khan. We wish him best of happiness, prosperity, good health and success. Our best wishes also to all members of his family. Happy birthday Shah Rukh,” Banerjee said on her official Facebook page.

The actor is the West Bengal’s brand ambassador and turned 49 Sunday.

The actor, during his visit to Kolkata Oct 20 to celebrate the success of his latest movie “Happy New Year”, met Banerjee at the state secretariat.

Top 10 blue-chips add Rs 97,648 cr to m-cap

As the BSE Sensex gained over 1,000 points last week, the top 10 companies saw a combined addition of over Rs 97,648 crore to market capitalisation during the past week.

Each of these firms saw its m-cap rise but the biggest gainer was TCS which added Rs 27,255.70 crore to its market worth. Its m-cap swelled to Rs 5,10,160.5 crore.

TCS remained at number one, followed by ONGC, Reliance, ITC, Coal India, Infosys, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Sun Pharma.

Government committed to upliftment of specially-abled children, assures PM Narendra Modi

Addressing the nation over All India Radio for the second time in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme, Prime Minister Modi praised the officers of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development for coming up with two innovative schemes for specially-abled children.

50,000 students participate in Salwan Marathon

The 20th edition of Salwan Marathon was held here Sunday with over 50,000 students from over 800 schools participating in the event. Indian athletes Pinki Jangra, Mandeep Jangra and Arpinder Singh also ran as volunteers in the race.

The event witnessed the participation of over 2,500 visually impaired and intellectually challenged students who ran 4.5 km with a volunteer escort. Schools from many states of the country, includng Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, participated in the event.

BJD divided house after leader’s arrest, suspension

Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) appeared to be a divided house following suspension of senior leader Pravat Tripathy, who was arrested by the CBI in connection with a multi-thousand-crore-rupee chit-fund scam.

Tripathy, a founding member of the BJD and a sitting legislator, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday for his alleged links with AT Group, a chit fund company.

A court Saturday remanded Tripathy in CBI custody till Nov 13.

Following the arrest, BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suspended Tripathy from the party.

Fission process in Kudankulam’s second unit delayed

The start of fission process in the second atomic power unit at Kudankulam has been postponed to March 2015, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) said.

According to NPCIL, the first criticality – start of fission – is expected to be in March 2015.

Earlier, NPCIL said the unit would start fission process this month.

India’s atomic power plant operator NPCIL is setting up two 1,000 MW Russian reactors at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district, 650 km from here. The total outlay for the project is over Rs.17,000 crore.

Bengal governor refuses comment on varsity ‘referendum’

West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi Sunday refused to comment on a “so-called referendum” being conducted by Jadavpur University students to press for vice chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti’s resignation.

“Questions are being raised about the validity of the so-called referendum and, therefore, it is not proper for me, at this stage, to make a comment,” Tripathi, who is the ex-officio chancellor of the university, told media persons here.

New research shows childhood leukemia and air pollution are linked

Researchers have suggested a theory in which a previously reported risk of leukemia among children born close to overhead power lines could be caused by an alteration to surrounding air pollution.

The new study found little evidence to support the ‘corona-ion hypothesis’ which claims that the excess of childhood leukemia cases are due to close high-voltage overhead power lines in the UK.

‘FUNtervals’ improve behaviour of kids

Four minutes of physical activity could improve behaviour in the classroom for primary school students, showed a research.

A brief, high-intensity interval exercise, or a ‘FUNterval’ for Grade 2 and Grade 4 students reduced off-task behaviour like fidgeting or inattentiveness in the classroom.

FUNtervals involved actively acting out tasks like collecting firewood, starting the fire by crouching and squatting to roast the marshmallows.

Recreational drug use linked to birth defects

Babies born to mothers who used recreational drugs during pregnancy are more likely to have birth defects in the brain, said a study.

The study found no significant links between recreational drug use and any other type of birth defect.

“Our findings suggest a link between brain birth defects and recreational drug use in expectant mothers,” said the lead author of the study, Anna David from the University College London.

Smartphone app to analyse speech, mental health

A new smartphone app can analyse your speech and use it to gain information about your mental health, scientists say.

Researchers from the University of Maryland in US showed that certain vocal features change as patients’ feelings of depression worsen.

Rather than relying solely on patients’ self-reports, the app could monitor both physical and psychological symptoms of mental illness on a regular basis and provide both patients and their mental health providers with feedback about their status.

Lahiri finishes tied 52nd in CIMB Classic

Another poor performance in round four of the $7 million CIMB Classic saw Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri finish in tied 52nd place as American Ryan Moore took home the title here Sunday.

A one-over par 73 in the final lap rounded off a poor tournament for the Indian, who is second behind American David Lipsky in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

With the win in the Macau Open, Lahiri came into the tournament with lots of expectations but failed to repeat his exploits.
