Thousands of people converged in Visakhapatnam on Sunday and took part in a half marathon organised to salute the spirit of people who showed strength during Cyclone Hudhud. Cyclone Hudhud had slammed into the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha last month, killing 41 people and tearing down tens of thousands of mud-and-thatch homes, and flattening rice, banana and sugarcane plantations. While the death toll was being reported as 38 in Andhra Pradesh, officials in Odisha said the number of people who had died there was unchanged at three.

‘Kiss Fest’ organisers, sympathisers taken into custody

Organisers and sympathisers of the controversial ‘Kiss of Love’ event were today taken into custody as they tried to march to the Marine drive grounds, venue of the symbolic protest against moral policing, police said.

The organisers tried to take out a march from Ernakulam Law college to the venue, but were prevented from doing so.
About 50 persons were taken into custody, they said.

Holding placards and raising slogans against moral policing, the protestors were bundled into a police van.

India centre gets nod for Airbus, Boeing pilot training

Pilot training facility FSTC has got an European regulator’s approval for training Airbus A320 and Boeing pilots, making it the only one in India to have the rating.

Located close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Flight Simulation Technique Centre (FSTC) is a Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO) allowing it to train pilots to fly the Boeing and Airbus 320 types of aircraft.

Khadi Sales up by 125 percent after my appeal: Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said the sale of khadi products had gone up by almost 125 percent since he urged the people to opt for the hand-woven cotton fabric.

“I was told that khadi sales increased by almost 125 percent,” Modi said on the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on All India Radio which was aired at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday.

“I urged people to purchase khadi last time. I never said become khadiwadi but I said buy some khadi. There was increase in khadi (sales),” he added.

He said his appeal had evoked response because people have started caring about the country.

India assures Mauritius on bilateral tax treaty

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday assured Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam that India will not do anything that will adversely affect Mauritius’s interests while reviewing the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).

Sushma Swaraj, who arrived here Saturday on a three-day visit, said amendments to the bilateral tax treaty would be made only after considering the legitimate interests of both sides.

She also emphasised that India-Mauritius relations “have an emotional connect”, said official sources.

EFL university student gang-raped

A student at the city-based English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was allegedly gang-raped by two fellow students, police said today.

The alleged incident occurred on the night of October 31 and the victim lodged a complaint this morning, Inspector at
Osmania University police station V Ashok Reddy, told PTI, without delving into details whether the accused were taken

Man held for molesting woman in Gurgaon

A 30-year-old man was arrested here Sunday for molesting a woman, police said.

Vinod Kumar, who hails from Delhi’s Chhatarpur area, was arrested from South City market after the 25-year-old woman, an advocate by profession, registered a complaint that he was chasing her and passing obscene gestures.

“The man was in inebriated condition. We arrested him,” a police officer said.

Mathura violence: 12 arrested, FIR against 586

The police Sunday filed cases against 586 people for Saturday’s violence here in which farmers, protesting the delay in payment of compensation for their land, pelted stones at security personnel and set vehicles ablaze. A dozen people were arrested Saturday night.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Uttar Pradesh unit president Kunwar Pal Singh Nishad was also picked up Saturday night.

The cases have been registered again 86 identified people and 500 others.

UK frames new rules for schools to tackle religious extremism

The UK government is planning to issue new rules imparting liberal “British values” in the country’s faith schools to tackle the recent threat of Islamist extremist influence exposed in some of them.

UK education secretary Nicky Morgan is set to order faith schools to teach pupils to be tolerant of other religions and
respect lesbian, gay and transgender relationships.

The schools have been warned that those that fail to follow new rules on British values will be judged inadequate
and could face closure, the Sunday Times reported.

Himachal begins probe into heritage building fire

A probe began Sunday into the fire that left Minto Court, a British era heritage building here, completely damaged, officials said. There was no loss of life.

“An inquiry has been constituted and it will be conducted by an SDM (sub-divisional magistrate) within one month,” said Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Malhotra.

He said the entire building, currently housing the office of Project Deepak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), an inter-services organisation under the defence ministry, was burnt down and the records damaged Saturday night.

India post 363/5 against Sri Lanka

Himachal CM participates in International Renuka Fair

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh Sunday participated in the International Renuka Fair organised in Sirmaur district.

He laid the foundation stone for a Rs.6.50 crore lift drinking water supply scheme at Dadahu, which would benefit around 7,000 people of about 225 habitations.

Shahnawaz Hussain gets threat call from Dubai number

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain was allegedly threatened over phone last night following which he has registered an FIR at the Parliament Street police station here.

In his complaint, Hussain said he received two calls from a Dubai number when he was on his way to his residence in
Delhi from the airport around 11:30 pm after he had returned from Patna.

The caller abused him for batting for the Narendra Modi government on television debates and asked him to leave the
party or else face repercussions, and that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be able to save him.

Sonia visits Vadra’s residence

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday visited daughter Priyanka and son-in-law Robert Vadra’s residence here, a day after Vadra snapped at a TV crew over a question on his land deals, but details of their meeting were not available.

According to party sources, Gandhi reached Vadra’s 35 Lodhi estate residence around 1.15 p.m. and stayed there for nearly half an hour.

The sources added that Vadra was present at home at that time. The intention or nature of the meeting was, however, not revealed.
