Dastan-e-Urdu program to be telecast from today on Doordarshan

Doordarshan will telecast Dastan-e-Urdu program at 9:30 p.m. from today. This has been produced by Kamna Prasad. It exposes the importance of Urdu language for the past centuries and its secular character. The characteristic feature of this program is it depicts the interests of all the regions of India. Urdu poet Keshav Chand Asthana died

Famous Urdu poet and writer Keshav Chand Asthana died at the age of 93. He held key positions as commissioner of Industries. Shravan Kumar passed away

Former Chief Secretary of A.P., Mr. Shravan Kumar, IAS passed away after a brief illness. He studied at All Saints High School and Nizam College. In 1953, he join IAS. He worked as Collector of Nalagonda, Guntur, Nellore and Hyderabad. He also worked at key posts like Commissioner of Labour, Chief Electoral Officer, Principal Secretary for Forest and Rural Development and Revenue. He also served Govt. of India as Joint Secretary in the Dept. of Personnel and Health. He worked as Chief Secretary from 1983 to 1988. He was famous as a disciplined and honest officer.

Organise T liberation day officially, CPI tells KCR

The Telangana State Committee of CPI here on Saturday demanded that the TRS government organise Telangana Liberation Day celebrations officially this year.
State CPI secretary Chada Venkat Reddy released a wall poster to this effect in Maqdoom Bhavan, here on Saturday. Iran criticises US over new sanctions

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has criticised the US over new sanctions, terming them “not compatible” with the spirit of current negotiations, BBC reported Saturday.

New sanctions on 25 firms and individuals were announced in Washington Friday, as world powers suspect Iran seeks atomic weapons, a claim it strongly denies.

Speaking at a news conference broadcast on state TV, Rouhani said the introduction of new sanctions was “a very ugly move” that would deepen distrust between the two sides.

Eight killed, 100 injured in Pakistan protest clashes

At least eight people have been killed and over 100 injured in the clashes between police and protesters in Pakistan as the protesters marched towards the prime minister’s house.

The Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) chief Tahir ul Qadri, the co-organiser of the protest, said his party’s seven workers were killed and 75 others injured, while Imaran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), said one of his workers was killed in clashes, Xinhua reported.

11 killed as bus overturns in Egypt

At least 11 people were killed and five others seriously wounded Saturday as a passenger bus overturned and caught fire on a highway in Egypt’s northern province of Sharqiya, media reported.

The tragedy took place on Cairo-Ismailia highway after front-left tyre of the speeding bus blew out, Xinhua reported.

Firefighters and ambulances rushed to the scene and managed to rescue five passengers after cutting through the doors of the vehicles that was completely burnt down.

UN peacekeepers in Golan come under renewed attack

The UN Saturday said its peacekeepers in the Golan Heights were attacked by “armed elements” “with mortar and heavy machine gun fire” as efforts are made to achieve the safe release of 44 detained solders Thursday.

“The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) reported that, early this morning, UN Position 69 was fired upon by armed elements,” a UN spokesman said in an emailed note to the press here.

Polish PM elected European Council president

The European Union (EU) leaders Saturday elected Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as president and Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini as the foreign policy chief of the European Council.

Donald Tusk, the center-right Polish Prime Minister will be the second president of the European council, xinhua reported citing a statement.

The council president is the person who chairs EU leaders summits and mediates between the 28 governments.

Crisis with Russia close to ‘full-scale war’

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Saturday that his country is “close to the point of no return” and “point of no return is full-scale war”.

“I think that we are very close to the point of no return,” Poroshenko said at a press conference at a European Union summit in Brussels.

He reiterated Kiev’s and NATO’s allegations that Russian troops and equipment have illegally crossed the border into eastern and southeastern Ukraine and warned that a point of no return would be reached if they take any offensive action.

NATO released satellite images supporting the accusations.

EU ready to impose new sanctions on Russia

The European Union’s leaders decided Sunday to give Russia one week to de-escalate Ukraine crisis, otherwise they would impose tougher sanctions on Russia, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said.

“The European Council said that it is ready to take further significant steps in the light of the evolution of the situation on the ground and it requests the council to urgently take preparatory work and present proposals for consideration within a week,” Xinhua quoted Van Rompuy as telling a press conference after a special summit in Brussels.

Police fire tear gas on protesters in Islamabad

Police in the Pakistani capital city fired tear gas shells to disperse thousands of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistani Awami Tehreek (PAT) supporters as they were marching towards the prime minister’s house late Saturday.

Police started shelling on the marchers when they were just metres away from the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s house, Xinhua quoted witnesses as saying.

Earlier, PTI chief Imran Khan, chief of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf and PAT Tahir ul Qadri, asked their supporters to march on the PM house to stage a sit-in there to press for the resignation of Nawaz Sharif.

32 militants killed in Pakistan air strike

At least 32 suspected militants were killed and three hideouts were destroyed in air raids conducted by Pakistani army in North Waziristan, media reported Saturday.

“During the fighting, 23 explosive laden vehicles and four ammunition dumps were also destroyed early in the morning,” Dawn online reported citing the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

These claims, however, could not be independently verified as journalists have limited access to the area.

PTI, MQM to observe mourning day

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have announced to observe a day of mourning Sunday following the clashes between protesters and law enforcers in Islamabad, media reported.

Dozens of people sustained injuries, including women and policemen, when protesters of the PTI and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) marched towards the prime minister’s house, leading to a clash with law enforcers, Geo News reported.

The riot police and other law enforcement personnel fired tear gas shells and shot rubber bullets on the protesters to stop them from moving ahead.

BJP welcomes EC decision directing UP government to remove Moradabad SSP

The president of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Laxmikant Bajpai, on Saturday, welcomed the Election Commission’s decision directing the state government to remove Moradabad Senior Superintendent of Police ahead of the by-polls.

“I welcome the EC’s decision to accept the request of BJP to hold free and fair election in the coming by election in Moradabad. By removing the SSP it has been proved that EC is determined to hold free and fair election,” Bajpai said.

Monsoon continues in north India

Several parts of north India received light to moderate monsoon showers although temperatures rose marginally and high humidity levels persisted in some places.

In Uttarakhand, the Kedarnath yatra was resumed after a fortnight today with the improvement in weather and road conditions.

Extremely sultry conditions persisted in Delhi as light rainfall was recorded in some parts of the city overnight.

Humidity levels were recorded between 56 and 89 per cent, causing extreme discomfort to people here.

Karmabhoomi Express passengers robbed in UP

Passengers on board Karmabhoomi Express were robbed in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday between Rampur and Bareilly railway stations, police said Saturday.

The incident happened when over a dozen robbers entered the train coaches and began beating up the passengers. The train had left Moradabad and was headed to Lucknow when the robbery took place.

UPA should be credited for economic revival: Chidambaram

Former finance minister P.Chidambaram Saturday claimed the credit for the 5.7 percent economic growth during the first quarter of this fiscal due to the policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

He said the UPA government had projected that the economic revival would happen at the start of 2014-15 owing to the steps taken in the earlier year.

Chidambaram also expressed confidence that the economic growth for the full year would be more than 5.5 percent if the central government acts on the foundation laid by the UPA government.

Two officials of then Indian Airlines were convicted for cheating the airline by making bogus bills under contributory family medical scheme (CFMS) and causing loss to the company, a lawyer said Saturday.

Central Bureau of Investigation Special Judge Brijesh Kumar Garg has sentenced Ashok Kumar Sehgal, who was working as a senior accounts assistant here, to four years in jail while N. Bhattacharjee, a former assistant manager, engineering was sentenced to one year in jail in the case dating to 1989-90.

Jan Dhan Yojna will not benefit the poor: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati Saturday trashed the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna and said that it was not going to benefit the poor and the weaker sections.
