Omar slams govt for suspending talks with Pakistan

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday attacked the Narendra Modi government for suspending talks with Pakistan over a “cup of tea” with separatist Hurriyat Conference and said India has set up a difficult benchmark for resumption of talks.

Speaking on a variety of issues including the resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council seeking resumption of dialogue with Pakistan, Omar said cancellation of talks with Pakistan was “demoralising” people of his state.

ISIS planning ‘spectacular’ attack on UK similar to India’s 26/11, warns MI5

British intelligence agency, MI5, has revealed that British recruits to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) who are now returning home are planning a “spectacular” attack on home soil that will be similar to the 2008 Mumbai attack which killed 174 people and injured 300.

Intelligence officials said that the ISIS is now planning to bring the war to the United Kingdom (UK) by targeting high profile locations/buildings in London, Birmingham or Manchester, reported The Daily Star.

Youth attacked at Tolichowki

3 persons attacked a youth yesterday night at Muhammadi line road, Tolichowki leaving him seriously injured. The incident created panic in Muhammadi line Jamali Kunta and nearby areas. Seriously injured Nazeer (30) lodged a complaint with Golconda police. Nazeer and his relatives allege that Azam, Tabbu and Bari attacked him. Yesterday night the trio reached Nazeer’s house and called him outside, later they badly assaulted him. Investigations are underway.

UGC sanctions 1.83 cr for Dept. of Journalism, OU

University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned 1.83 crore for Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) and extended its term in the Department of Communication and Journalism, Osmania University for further 5 years so that the research work may be developed. The grant is to establish Media Credibility Lab (MCL) and Mass Communication Documentation Centre (MJCDC) and augment the training infrastructure further.

Ballet Dance “Dastan-e-Golconda” directed by Shafi Master of Fine Arts Academy, Hyderabad was staged at Ravindra Bharati Theater on 25th August. Achievements of Qutub Shahi rulers were depicted. The love story of Quli Qutub Shah and Bhagmati was marvelously portrayed.

Congress criticizes BJP for hiking diesel prices

Congress leader Rashid Alvi today criticized the government for increasing the price of diesel and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) used to protest against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) when fuel prices were hiked during their regime.

“The government is continuously increasing diesel prices, the common man needs diesel. If price of diesel rose during the UPA regime, BJP people were out on the streets protesting. But today the BJP government is continuously increasing diesel price and it will pressurize the common man and the farmers,” said Alvi.

Over 300 injured in march towards Pak PM Nawaz Sharif’s house

Demanding immediate resignation of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, thousands of protesters led by Imran Khan and Tahir-ul-Qadri had running battles with police and paramilitary forces here in the wee hours today, resulting in injuries to more than 300 people.

The clashes started after orders by Khan and Qadri yesterday to shift their protest venue to the official residence of Sharif to force him resign immediately.

14-year-old girl gang-raped in UP

A 14-year-old girl was kidnapped and gangraped allegedly by four persons in Ramnagar area here, police said today.

The class VIII student was kidnapped and gangraped by four persons while she was returning from school yesterday, Additional Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Narain said.

He said that the three accused, Akbar, Jabir and Iqbal have been arrested.

Saudi government to ensure infection free Hajj

In the wake of the Ebola and Coronavirus outbreak, the Saudi government has said it will screen Hajj pilgrims this year.

The health ministry has made arrangements to screen the pilgrims for the Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The ministry also plans to provide pilgrims with health care services in the holy city of Makkah and at the main entry points of King Abdulaziz International Airport and the Jeddah Islamic Port, Abdulsalam Noorwali, a director in the ministry told the Arab News daily.

“I am Modi and you are Mori!” This is how Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the head monk of a Buddhist temple he visited here Sunday.

Modi, who looked dapper in a white kurta pyjama and bandhgala, spent some time with the 83-year-old head priest Yasu Nagamori of Kinkaku-ji temple, a spokesman for the external affairs ministry tweeted.

Prior to visiting the 1397-built Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) temple, Modi also went to the 57 meters tall Toji temple here.

Modi is on a five-day visit to Japan.

US sanctions not to hit n-talks: Iran

The new US sanctions against some Iranian entities will not hit negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme, President Hassan Rouhani has said.

The US Friday imposed sanctions on a number of Iranian individuals and entities while pledging to continue working towards a solution to the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

The latest sanctions were inconsistent with the Geneva nuclear agreement and they “will deepen mistrust” and may hurt mutual confidence, Rouhani said.

Modi regretting axing talks with Pakistan?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears to be having second thoughts on his decision to cancel foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan, a newspaper said Sunday.

“Surprised by the strong domestic and foreign criticism of his government’s unfortunate decision to cancel the talks which were fixed for Aug 25, Modi seems to be having second thoughts,” the Dawn said.

A Dawn editorial quoted Modi as saying before leaving for Japan Saturday that New Delhi had “no hesitation” in having discussions with Islamabad on all “outstanding issues”.

UN soldiers escape Syrian rebels

A group of 40 Filipino UN soldiers abducted by Islamist militants in Syria’s Golan Heights escaped Sunday.

Syrian rebels Saturday had surrounded two groups of Filipino soldiers working for a UN observer force, Al Jazeera reported.

Their escape came after another group of 32 Filipinos were rescued Saturday after a fierce battle with armed fighters.

Another group of 44 Fijian UN soldiers were captured by rebels Thursday at the Quneitra crossing, in an operation led by the Nusra Front, an Al Qaeda offshoot based in Syria.

13-yr-old attempts suicide after raped by tutor

A 13-year-old girl, who was being sexually assaulted and shown pornographic films by her tutor, attempted suicide, following which the accused was arrested here today, police said.

The incident came to light on Thursday when victim’s mother, residing in east Delhi’s Mandawali area, stumbled upon on her mobile phone and was shocked to find that she had been receiving porn video clips from her tutor, they said.

According to police, the girl revealed to her parents that her tutor was sexually assaulting and used to show and send her pornographic videos clips.

Expressing concern over the latest hike in diesel price, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today demanded its rollback and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change the existing price fixing formula for petroleum products which she said was based on “wrong policy” of the previous UPA regime.

“It is a matter of concern that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have increased the price of diesel which will spur inflation,” she said in a statement here tonight.

Modi visits Buddhist temples in Kyoto

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited two prominent Buddhist temples here Sunday on the first full day of a five-day visit to Japan that will later him to Tokyo.

Modi first went to the Toji temple accompanied by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, who flew down to Kyoto Saturday specially to receive the Indian leader.

External affairs ministry officials said Modi went around the 57 meters tall eighth century shrine in the company of the chief monk who explained to him various features of the temple.
