UPSC tells government that scrapping CSAT could result in litigation

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has reportedly communicated to the government that scrapping or postponing the 2014 CSAT examination could invite litigation.

The government has been told that the preliminary exams should be held on August 24 as scheduled.

Thousands of aspirants have been protesting against the changed pattern of the CSAT that allegedly favours English-speaking students.

11 put behind bars for boozing in public

City police has begun its drive against drinking in public. Acting upon the orders of commissioner, Task Force team arrested 11 people from various places who were involved in drinking in public and produced them before Special Metropolitan Magistrate where Magistrate Justice Basha Nawaz Khan remanded him under 3-day judicial custody. Later the police shifted them to jail.

West Zone Task Force took action at Sayeedabad and Malakpet and arrested 7 people while South Zone Task Force arrested 4 from Bahadurpura.

Prez to visit Hyderabad tomorrow

President Pranab Mukherjee will reach Hyderabad on Saturday, August 2, on a short visit. He will attend the 12th annual Convention of Nalsar University of Law, Shahmirpet.

Governor ESL Narsimhan, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sen Gupta Chief Justice High Court will also address the convention.

Specialists in Radiology, Oncology and Molecular and Physical Sciences told that cell phone towers are safe and they don’t cause cancer or radiation problems as feared by the public. The workshop on ‘Mobile Networks and Public Health’ was held by Cellular Operators Association of India. On the occasion Mr. Rajan S Mathews, director general COAI told that with India becoming the second largest telecom market of the world people are worried about the ill effects of mobile tower antennae and phone emissions on human health, this workshop aims to alleviate this apprehension.

Aamir Khan bares all for ‘PK’ poster

Superstar Aamir Khan has gone nude for the poster of the Rajkumar Hirani directed film ‘PK’. The 48-year-old actor revealed the poster late last night on his Twitter account.

In the first look, Aamir is seen walking nude on a railway track with a huge radio protecting his modesty. “What do you think guys? Tell me fast… Butterflies in my stomach!,” Aamir tweeted.

The ‘Dhoom 3’ star, who is known for experimenting his looks in the film, appeared nude for the the first time in his more than three-decade-old career.

Pune landslide: Toll rises to 51, fading hope of survivors

The death toll in the Malin village landslide disaster has climbed to 51 with recovery of ten more bodies since last night, district control room said today.

The deceased included 22 women, 23 men and six children, an official at the control room said.

So far, eight injured persons have been rescued and they were being treated at nearby hospitals, he said.

Maruti July sales rise 21.7% to 1,01,380 units

Country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Friday reported 21.7 per cent increase in its total sales for July at 1,01,380 units as against 83,299 units in the same month last year.

The company said its domestic sales rose 19.9 per cent during the month to 90,093 units as against 75,145 units in July 2013.

Sales of mini segment cars, including Alto, A-Star and WagonR, declined 14.4 per cent to 28,759 units as compared to 33,587 units in the year-ago month, MSI said in a statement.

Lightning claims two lives in UP

A father-daughter duo were killed after being struck by lightning in Paron village of the district, police said Friday.

The incident took place yesterday when Khemchandra (30), his daughter Deepa (8) and son Surendra (10) were standing under a tree due to heavy rainfall and lightning struck them, they said.

While Khemchandra and Deepa died on the spot, Surendra was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke is now on a mission to reclaim the no.1 position in Test cricket from South Africa.

Australia briefly held the No.1 ranking in Test cricket after beating the Proteas away, but South Africa’s recent series win in Sri Lanka meant a quick return to the top for the Proteas, the Mirror reported.

A new study has revealed simple methods to see through organs and the entire body to visualize long-range connections between cells as well as fine-grained cellular structures.

Senior study author Viviana Gradinaru of the California Institute of Technology said that although the idea of tissue clearing had been around for a century, to their knowledge, this was the first study to perform whole-body clearing, as opposed to first extracting and then clearing organs outside the adult body.

Two militants killed in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district

Two militants were reportedly killed in a fierce encounter in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday evening.

According by defence reports, army’s 7 Gadhwal launched a massive hunt to track down the militant groups who were hiding in the forests since the last couple of days.

Last evening, the army intensified the searches near the Sondigali forests adjacent to the LoC, the militants hiding in the area opened indiscriminate fire upon the forces, sources said, adding that the fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce gunfight that lasted for an hour.

76 pc of rescued child labourers went back to work: Study

Over 76 per cent of child labourers rescued in raids conducted six years ago in Mumbai went back to work, according to an NGO working for children’s rights.

The fact was highlighted in a study commissioned by CRY in Mumbai with research partner CARE.

The study, ‘Developing a New Perspective on Child Labour – Exploring the aftermath of the Mumbai raids conducted from 2008 onwards’, was aimed at exploring what happened to children who were rescued during the raids conducted in 2008, after the rescue and rehabilitation process.

Dishonour killing case

A case of murder has been registered against a youth for allegedly killing his sister for honour in Loee village of the district.

The 24-year-old victim, who had eloped with her lover, was shot dead allegedly by her brother after she returned home on Wednesday, police said.

Police have registered a case against the girl’s brother Intazar, who is absconding with other family members, SP (rural) Alok Priyadarshi told reporters today.

1 held for desecration of Puranapul temple

Husaini Alam police arrested a farmer belonging to Mahboob Nagar who was involved in the incident of causing damage to Pochamma temple, Puranapul. It is said that Teraiah Naik who hails from Mahboob Nagar district reached Hyderabad from Peddagutta via lorry to buy fertilizers. He consumed alcohol late at night near Puranapul and later entered into Pochamma temple located near Puranapul darwaza. He vandalised the idol present there. He tried to flee but police took him into custody the same night.

Delhi woman poisoned by in-laws in Ghaziabad

A newly-married woman was allegedly poisoned by her husband and in-laws in Sihani Gate area of the district, police said on Thursday.

25-year-old Prachi was rushed to a private hospital on Tuesday night and from there she was referred to a hospital in Delhi, where she breathed her last, police said.

On the complaint of her father, police have registered a case against Prachi’s husband Manish, her father-in-law Suresh Chand Tyagi, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

MACS rebuts CAG report on HIV positive cases rising to 40,855 in Manipur

Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) has rebutted the CAG report that was presented in Manipur legislative assembly; HIV positive cases in Manipur have increased greatly alleging the poor performance and unsatisfactory results in curbing new infections in high-risk individuals.
As per the CAG Report, in March 2007, about 25,919 HIV cases were reported. The count increased to 40,855 in March 2012, is of a great concern, over the increase which is of a serious magnitude.

Karnataka bound buses stopped at TN borders

With Kannada outfits observing a ‘city bandh’ in Bangalore today, buses plying to Karnataka have been stopped at Hosur on the Tamil Nadu border to prevent any untoward incidents, officials said.

Inter-State buses have also been stopped at Hosur and it would be operated from Hosur in evening. All private buses, including omni buses, stopped services from Hosur this morning, officials added.

As the buses were stopped at Hosur, several passengers hired taxis to continue their travel into Bangalore.

Police are maintaining strict vigil.

Father beats infant, posts photos on Facebook ‘for fun’

A French father who posted a photo of his one-month-old infant showing injuries on Facebook “for fun” has been booked on abuse charges.

During questioning, he revealed that he had hit the child because he could not stand the baby’s cries and had shared the photo on Facebook “for fun”.

A friend of the couple who saw the “abnormal” photo on the social networking site alerted the police.

The worried Facebook friend alerted police in Aisne in northern France, Le Parisien reported.

It prompted a police probe that led to both parents being charged with violence on a minor.

Air Algerie AH5017 aircraft fell 30,000 feet in three minutes, say investigators

The Air Algerie plane AH5017 had plunged 30,000 feet into the Sahara desert in three minutes after a violent storm, killing 118 people, said investigators.

The inexperience of the Spanish crew was also one of the major reasons behind the crash, claimed aviation experts.

According to the Independent, General Gilbert Diendere, head of the Burkina Faso armed forces said that the pilot had tried to turn around the storm but returned to original path too soon.

He added that it seemed like the pilot had been too late to react to the storm.

Realty firm Supertech Wednesday said it will comply with the order of the Supreme Court to return money to flat buyers who have sought refund.

The Supreme Court today directed Supertech to give back money within a month to flat owners who had sought refund of their investments after Allahabad High Court ordered demolition of the company’s 40-storey residential twin towers Apex and Ceyane in Noida.
