Teen sexually assaulted, man arrested

A 53-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday night by Kumaraswamy Layout police on the charge of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

The accused, Dhanakoti, was well aware with the victim and her family. The girl’s parents were not at home.

According to the complaint filed by the victim, Dhanakoti touched her inappropriately, as he was talking to the victim.

The police have registered cases under Sections 354 and 376 of the IPC.

UPSC CSAT row: Govt. to give decision on Varma Committee report soon, says minister

Minister of State ( MoS) in the Prime Minister’s Office ( PMO ) Dr. Jitendra Singh said Friday that the Varma Committee report on changes to be made in the pattern of conducting civil service examinations is with the government, which in turn, will give a final decision on it in a couple of days.

Singh said, “Now that the report has come, the government will plan and act accordingly. From your medium, I want to assure that the decision will be well thought out and a balanced one.”

UPSC exam row creates turmoil in Parliament

The UPSC exam row generated heat in both houses of Parliament with a member tearing a paper and throwing it towards the Speaker in Lok Sabha and almost the entire opposition staging a walkout in the Upper House as government refused to set a time-line for resolving the issue.

Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Prakash Javadekar also came under sharp attack in Rajya Sabha from the opposition which demanded an apology from him after he allegedly “instigated” members of the treasury benches to protest when the issue was raised.

PM Modi meets U.S Secretary of State John Kerry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S Secretary of State John Kerry at 7 Race Course Road here today.

The two of them reportedly discussed bilateral as well as global issues of mutual interest to the countries.

This visit is also significant as it will create the ground for Modi’s visit to the US in September this year.

Kerry is on a three day visit to India.

Bhopal gas tragedy: UCC can’t be sued for plant contamination, says US court

In a major blow to victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, a US court has ruled that the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) cannot be sued for the ongoing contamination from the chemical plant.

Non-governmental organisation EarthRights International had filed the lawsuit in the Southern District of New York on behalf of residents of Bhopal saying land and water of the citizens are being contaminated by waste from the plant.

‘E-auction properties hypothecated to banks’

The Madras High Court has suggested that banks resort to e-auctioning of properties hypothecated to them.

While dismissing a petition filed by a borrower, who opposed e-auctioning of properties, justices M Jaichandren and R Mahadevan of the Madurai bench of the court said, “E-auctioning is a small step taken towards adopting modern technologies in implementing procedures provided by law.”

They stressed on the need to adapt to changes in the digital era.

Bus accident triggered tension in the Old City on Friday

A student hurt in an accident by an RTC bus at Shamsheergunj triggering a violent protest by locals. An angry mob pelted stones at buses. This is the second incident in Old City in a week.

Earlier this week, two isolated incidents triggered tension in parts of the Old City on Wednesday night leading to police deploying forces in sensitive areas across the city on Thursday to check any flare-up of the situation.

Uproar in Rajya Sabha over UPSC CSAT row

VE Commercial Vehicles register 6% growth in July

Auto maker VE Commercial Vehicles today reported 6.06 per cent growth by selling 3,341 units of its Eicher branded products in July.

The company, which is a 50:50 joint venture between the Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, had sold 3,150 units in the same month last year.

Domestic sales registered a marginal increase of 1.37 per cent to 2,955 units last month, as against 2,915 units in the same month a year ago, VE Commercial Vehicles, informed the BSE.

Spelling mistakes galore in Delhi Metro stations

It may be offering a world-class service to its commuters, but when it comes to spelling out names of places and stations on its signages and route maps, the Delhi Metro leaves a lot to be desired.

Many of these names have either been wrongly spelt out or are spelt out ‘differently’ at different places.

For instance, ‘Chelmsford Club’, located next to the Central Secretariat Metro Station is wrongly spelt as “Chams Ford Club” at its Gate No 1 that opens on Red Cross Road.

And, it is put out as ‘Chelms Ford Club’ on the wall signage and label boards at Gate No 2.

India to provide USD 1 million for aid to Gaza victims

As the Gaza conflict shows no immediate signs of let-up and the number of deaths, including of scores of children, mount to over 1,400, a concerned India is planning to send $1 million to a UN fund to provide aid to the suffering Palestinians fleeing the battle zone.

The $1 million would go towards providing medicines, food, constructing shelters for the Palestinians in Gaza whose land is being bombarded relentlessly in Israeli air and ground attacks, said an official source declining to be named.

First man-made biological leaf to make oxygen for space travel

An inventor in the UK has developed the world’s first synthetic biological leaf that absorbs water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen just like a plant, and it could enable long-distance space travel.

The leaf, created by Royal College of Art student Julian Melchiorri, consists of chloroplasts suspended in a matrix made out of silk protein. “The material is extracted directly from the fibres of silk,” Melchiorri said.

Google has revealed that France tops the list of countries that have filed requests for removal of links from the engine’s search results under the European Union’s recent right to be forgotten rulingGoogle has received 17,500 requests involving around 58,000 URLs from France, CNET reported. Germany comes a close second with 16,500 requests referring to around 57,000 URLs followed by the United Kingdom that has made 12,000 requests concerning 44,000 URLs.

The revelations were made in a letter addressed to the EU by Google.

How shrinking dinosaurs transformed into flying birds

A new study has revealed that how massive, meat-eating, ground-dwelling dinosaurs evolved into agile flying birds after they started shrinking for over 50 million years.

The scientists from the University of Southampton demonstrated a detailed family tree of dinosaurs and their bird descendants, which maps out this unlikely transformation.

“These bird ancestors also evolved new adaptations, such as feathers, wishbones and wings, four times faster than other dinosaurs,” says co-author Darren Naish, Vertebrate Palaeontologist at the University of Southampton.

Housewife set on fire by husband and in-laws in Burdwan

A housewife was allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws in Memari area of Burdwan district, police said Friday.

Arshad Sheikh of Dadpur village lodged an FIR alleging that his daughter Shakila Bibi was set on fire by her husband Saifuddin Mollah and in-laws on July 29 night.

Shakila was rushed to the Burdwan Medical College Hospital by her neighbours. She succumbed to her burn injuries last night, police said.

Sheikh also alleged that after marriage his daughter was physically and mentally tortured by her husband and in-laws.
