Muslims across northeast send out message of peace during Eid

Festivals play an important role in bringing together people and fostering a spirit of brotherhood. The holy festival of Eid was recently celebrated across the northeast with much fervor. A large number of Muslims gathered at the Gedu Mia mosque in Agartala to offer prayers on Eid-ul-fitr, the end of holy month of Ramzan.

Court extends interim order on Tapas Pal”s rape comment till August 14th

Trinamool Congress MP and Advocate Kalyan Banerjee said that the interim-order passed by single judge of the Calcutta High Court against Member of Parliament (MP) from Bengal”s Krishnanagar, Tapas Pal, for his alleged rape remarks has been extended till August 14th.

“The hearing has concluded, and the judgment will be passed on 13th August. As of now, the court has extended the interim order extended till 14th,” said Banerjee. Yesterday, the Kolkata High Court had extended the interim order on Pal till Monday.

Rupee crashes 63 paise vs USD to end at over 4-month low

Weakness in global stock markets and a strong US currency pulled down the rupee by a whopping 63 paise to end at over four-month low of 61.18, logging its worst weekly loss since January 24.

Importers and some banks bought dollars and short-sellers covered their positions on hopes of further hike in the dollar value after US Fed recently trimmed its monthly economic stimulus by USD 10 billion. The dollar too gained against most peers as the American economy grows stronger.

Telangana survey to cover 84 lakh households in one day

In a massive exercise to ascertain the socio-economic conditions of four crore people in Telangana, about four lakh employees will conduct the Intensive Household Survey in a single day.

The survey, aimed at weeding out fake beneficiaries of government welfare schemes, will cover 84 lakh households in all 10 districts of Telangana including Hyderabad.

Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao Friday asked the government staff to be ready for the exercise, the date for which is yet to be finalized.

Legendary off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna today questioned India’s logic behind ignoring Ravichandran Ashwin and termed team management’s move to play Ravindra Jadeja as a strike bowler a “disastrous” one.

“Ravindra Jadeja should play in all Tests but only as a stock bowler. He is not a wicket-taker. Jadeja’s capability as a spinner doesn’t make him a strike bowler. Now if the team management forces a stock bowler to become a strike bowler, then disaster is waiting to happen,” Prasanna told PTI during an interview today.

Small plane crashes into warehouse in Germany

Police say a small plane has crashed into a warehouse in the northern German city of Bremen. There is no immediate word on possible casualties. Police spokesman Dirk Siemering said the aircraft went down today at lunchtime close to the city’s airport. It hit a warehouse in which tires were stored.

It wasn’t known immediately how many people were on board the plane.
