Tapas Paul speeches: CID probe stayed till verdict Aug 13

A division bench of the Calcutta High Court Thursday extended, till Aug 13, the stay on a single judge’s order directing a CID probe and filing of an FIR into the rape and violence remarks by Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul.

A bench of Justice Girish Chandra Gupta and Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty concluded hearing into the matter and said they would pass the order Aug 13.

Mirchi Music Awards in Hyderabad Aug 16

The Mirchi Music Awards South 2013, which brings together the music fraternity across all the four southern language films, will take place in Hyderabad Aug 16.

This year, the music artists from South India get a chance to win 14 awards across popular categories, Radio Mirchi said in a statement here Friday.

Each of the four south Indian languages will have a separate jury panel headed by a chairman.

The Tamil jury is headed by Gangai Amaran, Telugu by D. Suresh Babu, Kannada by D.Narayanan and Shyamaprasad will be doing the honours for the Malayalam industry.

Vogue Wedding Show 2014 has returned for the second time to the capital. The three-day bridal exhibition commenced Friday with creations by Indian fashion industry’s big names like Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahiliani and JJ Valaya.

With as many as 44 participants, the wedding exhibition was visited by the niche segment of the society. Dressed in palazzos or dresses, the would-be brides and grooms were either accompanied by their friends or mothers.

‘English Vinglish’ mints $420,000 in Japan

Sridevi-starrer “English Vinglish” has amassed $420,000 at the Japanese box office, as it continues its dream run in international markets.

It is said to have become the second highest Hindi film in Japan after “3 Idiots”.

The movie, backed by Eros International, set the cash registers ringing at the Japanese box office with earning of a bumper 42,608,115 yen ($420,000 approx) and continues to run successfully in theatres.

Ford India total sales up 24 percent in July

Ford India, the Indian subsidiary of US auto major Ford Motor Company, closed last month with 24 percent increase in total sales, the company said Friday.

In a statement issued here, the company said it sold 15,282 units (domestic and exports) last month as compared to 12,338 units sold in the corresponding period in 2013.

July exports grew to 7,690 vehicles from 4,471 vehicles a year ago, while domestic wholesales stood at 7,592 units compared to 7,867 units sold in July last year.

Vishal Sikka Friday took over as chief executive of Indian IT bellwether Infosys, two days after the iconic company’s investors unanimously approved his appointment to the top job and as a whole-time director on its board at an extraordinary general meeting here.

RBI Governor meets Jaitley ahead of monetary review

Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan Friday met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss economic issues ahead of the central bank’s bi-monthly monetary policy review Tuesday.

“I caught up on economic issues with the finance minister,” Rajan said after the meeting here.

The RBI is likely to keep rates unchanged when it reviews its monetary policy Tuesday.

Known for the primacy he accords to controlling inflation, Rajan raised interest rates three times since he took office in September 2013, even as economic growth slowed to decade-low rates.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced that Visakhapatnam will get the Metro rail project.

Announcing a slew of schemes, AP Information Technology Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy said children between 6 to 14 years of age will be educated under the “Badi Pilustondi” scheme. Speaking to media persons here, he said 24,596 children have been enrolled under the scheme and a biometric system will be introduced to mark attendance.

India-origin woman banker jailed for theft in Scotland

An Indian-origin woman bank employee has been jailed for stealing 120,000 pounds (around $202,000) from a customer’s account in Scotland, a media report said Thursday.

Satnam Kaur, 30, a Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) employee, transferred a large sum of money from Robert Brown’s account to India from Aberdeen in Scotland in 2011, BBC reported.

Glasgow-based Kaur was jailed for 12 months by the Aberdeen Sheriff Court Wednesday.

Kaur was working as a customer adviser at the RBS in Aberdeen when she took the money between Oct 20 and Nov 2 in 2011.

INLD announces 62 candidates for Haryana assembly polls

Haryana’s main opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Friday announced its first list of 62 candidates for the state assembly elections to be held later this year.

INLD secretary general Abhay Singh Chautala announced the list here.

Chautala himself will contest from the Ellenabad seat, from where he is the sitting legislator.

The 90-member Haryana assembly is scheduled to go to the polls in October.

Modi: Shift from affidavits to self-certification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday sought minimum use of affidavits for official work, asking government departments to shift to self-certification to benefit the common man.

In a citizen-friendly initiative, all ministries and departments of the central as well as state governments have been asked to make provision for self-certification of documents in place of affidavits, an official release said here.

The requirement of attestation by a gazetted officer is also sought to be replaced by self-certification by the citizen.

CPI Flays T Congress

Telangana CPI secretary Chada Venkat Reddy today slammed the Telangana Congress for its allegations.

In a pressnote released here on Friday, Venkat Reddy alleged that the Congress had failed to allot seats to the CPI as per its previous agreement.

During the Khammam Congress Committee review, the party leadership blamed the CPI for its poll debacle, he said. Though the Congress promised to allot 10 MLA seats it gave only seven, he pointed out.

File school fee refund status report: HC

The Delhi High Court Friday sought a status report from the city government on the steps taken by it to refund excess fee taken by unaided private schools.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul asked the department of education to file the status report while stating the steps taken in the issue.

The bench posted the matter for Oct 28.

“What are you (government) doing? Let us know what you have done. File status report on this,” said the bench.

Two Innovas For Each Police Station: DGP

Telangana State Director General of Police Anurag Sharma has said two Innova vehicles would be allocated to each police station in the State.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, the DGP said the newly acquired vehicles would be linked to the Control Room. He also disclosed that the design of the police uniform would be finalized by August 15.

The DGP said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao would hand over two-wheelers and Innovas. Wherever the Innovas cannot ply, the two-wheelers would be used, he added.
