As part of its efforts to establish ‘Gourav Sadans’, shelters for beggars in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas, the civic body is mulling to involve NGOs. “The GHMC is planning to involve the NGOs interested in providing shelters to the old, aged, crippled, disabled, terminal type of beggars for their rehabilitation,” GHMC

Tihar conference room declared special jail for Sahara chief

The conference room of Delhi’s Tihar jail has been declared a “special jail” which will be offered to Sahara group chairman Subrata Roy to hold negotiations for sale of his luxury hotels in New York and London.

The Supreme Court in its decision today allowed Roy to stay in and use the conference room of the jail for 10 days to negotiate the sale of his luxury hotels to raise Rs 10,000 crore so the money can be deposited as ordered by the court to secure his bail.

Pune village landslide toll reaches 68

With hopes of finding more survivors fast receding, rescuers have dug out 27 more bodies since last night as the toll in the Malin landslide disaster rose to 68.

Over 100 people are still feared trapped under the debris of the landslide that flattened 44 houses in the village located in a hilly terrain in Ambegaon taluka, in the vicinity of the Bhimashankar forest range.

NDRF jawans, whose relentless rescue efforts entered the third day today after the village was buried under masses of mud on Wednesday morning, wore masks to keep out stench of the decomposed bodies.

58 nurses on way back, Govt again asks Indians to leave Libya

58 Indian nurses from Libya are on their way back home, the government said today while making a fresh appeal to all the Indians in the strife-torn nation to leave in view of deterioration in situation with a promise to make all arrangements for evacuation.

External Affairs Ministry said the government has made arrangements for a special flight as well as a ferry besides taking other measures to evacuate those wanting to return home from Libya.

Twinkle challenges HC order to give will copy to Anita Advani

Twinkle Kumar, former actor and daughter of Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna, today filed an appeal before a division bench of Bombay High Court against a single judge’s order asking her to give a copy of her late father’s will to his former companion Anita Advani.

Justice R D Dhanuka, on July 30, had allowed Advani to secure a copy of the will.

Twinkle today filed appeal before the bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah which would hear it on August 4. The bench said she need give a copy of the will to Advani in the meantime.

New born baby stolen, act caught on CCTV

In an audacious act caught on CCTV, a woman has stolen a new born baby after entering the labour room at a well known hospital here.

The CCTV visuals showed the unidentified woman walking away nonchalantly with the infant tucked in her clothes, police said today.

The woman took away the infant from its grandmother at KLE Hospital here on Wednesday, saying it had to be administered vaccine.

Belgaum District Superintendent of Police Chandragupta said police had obtained clues and were confident of nabbing the accused.

AP to offer investment subsidy to set up infotech projects

The Andhra Pradesh government announced its new information technology policy today, offering an investment subsidy of 10 per cent (of capital expenditure) for mega projects which employ 5,000 people or more.

Entrepreneurs who are women, scheduled castes or scheduled tribe setting up infotech units would get 25 per cent investment subsidy on fixed capital besides other incentives, it was announced today.

China confirms new generation long-range missiles: report

China has acknowledged the existence of a new inter-continental ballistic missile said to be capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads as far as the United States, state-run media reported today.

A government environmental monitoring centre in Shaanxi said on its website that a military facility in the province was developing Dongfeng-41 (DF-41) missiles, the Global Times reported.

The DF-41 is designed to have a range of 12,000 kilometres, according to a report by Jane’s Strategic Weapon
Systems, putting it among the world’s longest-range missiles.

‘World silence on Israel ‘war crimes’ is ‘inexcusable’

Saudi King Abdullah said today that world silence over Israeli “war crimes” in the Gaza Strip was “inexcusable,” in a speech published by the official SPA news agency.

“We see the blood of out brothers in Palestine being shed in collective massacres, that have spared nobody, and in war crimes against humanity… All taking place under the eyes and ears of the international community… That has stood indifferently watching events in the whole region,” the king said.

“This silence is inexcusable,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh to get 24×7 power supply from Oct 2: Govt

Claiming to have achieved zero power deficit, the Andhra Pradesh government today announced a plan to supply 24×7 electricity to all domestic, commercial and industrial users from October 2, even as it plans to generate over 6,100 MW of power in the next five years.

The AP Cabinet, which met here today, approved a programme to generate 4,400 MW of thermal power and another 400 MW of hydro power in the next five years.

Military’s view sought on banning tobacco

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley Friday said Health Minister Harsh Vardhan’s request to ban tobacco products in military canteens has been forwarded to the services for their opinion.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Jaitley said: “A reference has been received from Harsha Vardhan … and (the) same has been sent to (the) services.”

“I strongly feel that we need our armed forces to be physically and mentally fit and avoid using substances that compromise their health, fitness and well being,” Harsh Vardhan had said.

157 years later, tributes paid to 1857 martyrs

Exactly 157 years after they were pushed into a well by the British rulers, the remains of 282 martyrs from the first war of independence in 1857 which were dug up from a well in Punjab’s Ajnala town this year were paid their last respects Friday.

The remains were dug up from the “Kalian wala khu” (well of the blacks), now referred to as the “shaheedan wala khu” (well of the martyrs), at Ajnala near Amritsar.

The victims, mostly Indian soldiers in the British Army who had rebelled, were mercilessly pushed into the well and killed after being covered with soil by British troops.

Won’t seek Modi’s help for a Hindu Nepal: Kamal Thapa

The leader of a pro-monarchist and pro-Hindu political party in Nepal has said his party would not seek Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s help to restore the country’s status as the world’s only Hindu state.

Kamal Thapa, president of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RRP-Nepal), said whether Nepal should be a Hindu state or a secular state is the internal matter of the country.

“We don’t want leaders of other country to get involved in our internal matter,” he told a private television channel during an interview.

“We will raise the matter within our own country.”

India to provide $1 million for aid to Gaza victims

As the Gaza conflict shows no immediate signs of let-up and the number of deaths, including of scores of children, mount to over 1,400, a concerned India is planning to send $1 million to a UN fund to provide aid to the suffering Palestinians fleeing the battle zone.

The $1 million would go towards providing medicines, food, constructing shelters for the Palestinians in Gaza whose land is being bombarded relentlessly in Israeli air and ground attacks, said an official source declining to be named.

Dead lizard in Bihar mid-day meal, 50 students ill

Fifty students of a government primary school fell ill in Bihar Friday after eating their mid-day meal in which a dead lizard was found, an official said.

After villagers protested, the district administration has ordered the suspension of two officials concerned, including the school headmaster.

“An FIR has been lodged against both of them,” a district official said.

This is the fourth such incident in the last one month in the state.

Japanese men’s life expectancy over 80 years for first time

The life expectancy of Japanese men stood at 80.21 years in 2013, the first time that men have gone past the 80-year mark in the Asian country, according to the country’s ministry of health, labour and welfare.

The data, reported Friday by national broadcaster NHK, reveals a rise of 0.27 years compared to 2012.

At the same time, life expectancy among Japanese women is 86.61 years, once again the highest in the world.

For 26 consecutive years until 2010, Japanese women had the highest life expectancy in the world.

“He is a very dear friend and will always remain one,” Humaima said here.

Fast-track criminal justice system: SC

The Supreme Court Friday told the central government to take steps to fast-track the criminal justice system so that cases can be decided expeditiously instead of lingering for years.

A bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman said the creation of additional courts coupled with related judicial infrastructure should be “substantial and not just symbolic”.
