Engineering student washed away in canal; NDRF team deployed

A engineering student from the district got washed away in a canal here following which an NDRF team has been pressed into service on Friday, police said.

The victim identified as Nitin, a resident of Sahibabad and a B Tech student had yesterday gone to Masuri canal in Gangnahar area along with a friend Nishu, they said.

Nishu fell into the canal and then Nitin jumped into it to rescue her, but he (Nitin) did not know how to swim and got washed away, police said.

Meanwhile Nishu was rescued somehow but Nitin could not be found.

No legislative agenda of Lok Sabha for Monday

Even though the current session of parliament is scheduled till August 14, the government has not listed any legilsative business for Monday in Lok Sabha which will just have a ‘calling attention’ and resumed discussion on flood and drought situation in the country.

Fire breaks out in Mumbai suburban residential building

A fire broke out in an 11-storey residential building in the western suburbs of Mumbai on Friday, though no loss of life has been reported as yet. According to fire brigade officials, the fire broke out on the fourth floor of Godavari building in suburban Versova, adjacent to the Versova telephone exchange.

“We got a call around 4 PM that a fire has broken out in a commercial building adjacent to the Versova telephone exchange. Four fire tenders, four water tankers were rushed to the spot and we have termed the fire as ‘Grade 1 fire’,” a fire brigade official said.

Andhra plans 14 ports, three international airports

The Andhra Pradesh government plans to develop 14 ports and three international airports.

While the construction of Kakinada, Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram and Kakinada SEZ ports is underway, the government has sought a report within six weeks on development of 10 other ports, said an official statement.

The decision followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to review trade and investment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh.

The government said that there is a huge potential for trade and allied activities by developing ports.

Asked if Salman, who is reportedly a good painter, has ever gifted him a sketch, Shah Rukh said “these questions are old (ask something different on Salman). I am bored now.”

Asaram’s health deteriorates, rushed to hospital

Spiritual leader Asaram Bapu, who is lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail on accusations of rape, was rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital here after his health deteriorated.

During his check-up, Asaram told the Neurophysician that he is not able to sleep properly in the jail and that there is pain in his jaws.

After attending to him, doctor advised Asaram to get the X-ray and blood tests done. He was later sent back to the prison after receiving medical attention.

BJP accuses Congress govt of stalling report on Wakf land scam

The BJP on Friday accused the Congress Government in Karnataka of trying to stall a report on the alleged scam of over Rs 2.30 lakh crore involving the Wakf Board land and said it should be tabled in the Assembly.

“It is compulsory. They have to table it on the floor of the legislative assembly,” former Karnataka Minorities Commission Chairman Anwar Manipaddy, who gave the findings, told reporters here.

Two Innovas for each Police Station: Anurag Sharma

Telangana State Director General of Police Anurag Sharma has said two Innova vehicles would be allocated to each police station in the State.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, the DGP said the newly acquired vehicles would be linked to the Control Room. He also disclosed that the design of the police uniform would be finalized by August 15.

The DGP said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao would hand over two-wheelers and Innovas. Wherever the Innovas cannot ply, the two-wheelers would be used, he added. (NSS)

58 Indian nurses returning home from Libya

Days after India rescued 49 nurses from Iraq, 58 Indian nurses from violence-hit Libya are on their way back to India, the government said Friday.

The 58 nurses, mostly from Kerala, reached the border post of Ras Jedir on way to Tunisia, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said here.

“We hope that by late night, all the nurses will be in Tunis. We have made arrangements for them to fly back to their home state,” he said.

He said that a smaller number of people will be travelling out of Libya on Saturday and also the day after.

The government has hired 40 men dressed as langurs to drive away monkeys after realising the agile simians cannot be stopped from spreading panic in the parliament premises.

Posing as black-faced langurs, these trained men are armed with rubber bullet guns to drive away the monkeys who fear their distant relatives.

Two soldiers killed in Pakistan violence

At least two soldiers were killed and several others injured in two separate incidents of firing and bomb blast in northwest and southwest Pakistan Friday, media reported.

Citing Express TV, Xinhua reported that one paramilitary soldier was killed when some unknown militants from the Afghan border opened fire in Pakistan’s northwest tribal area of Bajaur Agency.

The attackers fled the scene after the attack.

RGIA police arrest notorious house burglar

The RGIA Police arrested a notorious house breaking offender who was allegedly involved in various offences in different police stations limits.

The accused, R Shankar Naik, was arrested during vehicle checking drive at Kishanguda flyover bridge on Thursday night. Police recovered 70 tolas gold, 50 tolas silver and one stolen Activa bike from his possession. US blames Hamas for collapse of Gaza ceasefire

The US today blamed Hamas for the breakdown of a 72-hour humanitarian truce, saying the attack by the Palestinian militant group that left two Israeli soldiers dead in the Gaza Strip was an “outrageous violation” of the ceasefire.

“The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s attack, which led to the killing of two Israeli soldiers and the apparent abduction of another. Man held for bid to rape 14-yr-old girl

The Banjara Hills police on Friday arrested a 55-year-old man on the charges of attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl.

According to Inspector P Murali Krishna, the accused, Prem Chand, a resident of Srinagar Colony, allegedly tried to rape the minor girl in his neighbourhood. Following a complaint received by the girl’s parents, police registered a case and took the accused into custody.

Kerala seeks special flight to bring back nurses

Kerala today urged the Centre to immediately arrange a special flight for passage of the Indian nurses who had left strife-torn Libya to neighbouring Tunisia to come back home. Andhra to develop mega IT hub at Vizag

The Andhra Pradesh government Friday decided to develop a mega Information Technology hub in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag.

This was envisaged in the IT policy 2014-2020 approved by the state cabinet Friday at its meeting, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The cabinet also decided to develop metro rail project in the coastal city.

IT Minister P. Raghunath Reddy said IT hubs would be created at Vijayawada, Kakinada, Tirupati and Anantapur with walk to work and cycle to work concepts.

Joint Palestinian team still headed for Cairo: Abbas

A joint Palestinian delegation, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, is to travel to Cairo tomorrow for ceasefire talks despite the renewed fighting in Gaza, president Mahmud Abbas’s office announced.

“Abbas has formed the delegation, which will head tomorrow for Cairo whatever the circumstances,” his office said in a statement, giving the names of the 12-member delegation.

They included Abbas aide Azzam al-Ahmed, Palestinian Authority security head Majed Faraj, several senior Hamas officials including Mussa Abu Marzuq, and a leading member of Islamic Jihad, Ziad al-Nakhale.
