Manipuri youth alleges harassment by Delhi Police

A 22-year-old youth from Manipur claimed that he was beaten up by two cops in Gandhi Vihar area of north Delhi on Wednesday, though police have denied it.

The victim allegedly sustained broken fingers in his right hand and underwent treatment at a private hospital in Civil Lines.

However, police rejected the claims, saying that they have not got any report from the hospital authorities regarding any injuries sustained by the youth.

73 killed in Maharashtra’s worst landslide disaster

The overnight toll in Maharashtra’s worst landslide disaster in Malin village of Pune district went up to 73 Saturday morning with no reports of finding survivors, a top official said here.

“We have recovered 73 bodies so far… Rescue work is still underway,” District Collector Saurabh Rao told IANS.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies have rescued 23 people, including the youngest, a three-month old male child Rudra, from under the debris in the past three days.

Sushil Kumar gets a rousing welcome after returning from CWG

Wrestler Sushil Kumar got a rousing welcome last night after returning home from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Galsgow, where he bagged a gold medal in wrestling.

Sushil Kumar said, “It was my second tournament in the new weight category. We trained well and had planned to play aggressively which turned out to be successful. I am thankful to the whole country and the Hooda government for all their support and wishes.”

“All the team members played very well. Also, I would like to congratulate the women wrestlers for their brilliant performance,” he added.

Something has changed in our society after Narendra Modi became the prime minister. Today, speaking carelessly about other religious communities has become acceptable. A new “normal” is being defined about how India talks to herself and the world.

Election campaigns tend to accentuate political differences to appeal to voters and draw them away from others. Modi’s campaign also gained from polarising voters.

After a handsome victory, however, as prime minister, he has failed to heal the polity. If he lets the situation drift, differences could grow into deep social divisions.

Anderson, Jadeja found not guilty by Judicial Commissioner

England’s pace spearhead James Anderson and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja were today found not guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct after a marathon six-hour hearing, putting an end to the suspense over their participation for the remaining part of the Test series.

The hearing, conducted by Judicial Commissioner Gordon Lewis took place via video-conference, and verdict came as a huge relief for Anderson, who faced the prospect of a two-Test ban if he had been found guilty of a Level 3 offence.

Curfew to be relaxed in Saharanpur for 10 hours tomorrow

Curfew will be relaxed in the violence-hit district for ten hours tomorrow.

District Magistrate Sandhya Tiwari said the curfew will be relaxed from 9 AM to 7 PM in all police station areas tomorrow.

Tiwari said the situation was normal in the district today.

Massive shelling by Israel killed about 70 people in the Hamas-ruled Gaza following the collapse of a 72-hour truce shortly after it began today,while two of its soldiers died and another was believed to have been abducted by the Palestinian militant group.

The humanitarian ceasefire – brokered by the US and the UN to end more than three weeks of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip – collapsed just two hours after it began this morning.

Former President and renowned scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today observed that engineers and doctors of the country would create miracles if they are encouraged by the government.
Speaking at a seminar on “Biomedical Sciences” organized in the Osmania University here, the former President said the engineers and doctors of the country can create miracles. MPs spent an average of Rs.4.3 million to fight polls

Newly-elected members of the 16th Lok Sabha spent an average of Rs. 4.3 million during their election campaign, according to an analysis by the National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The analysis based on the election expense declarations of 537 MPs from Lok Sabha to the election commission shows that the party wise average election expenses spending for 277 MPs from Bharatiya Janata Party is Rs 4.18 million and for 44 MPs from Congress is Rs 4.16 million.

Nine Palestinians killed in Gaza airstrikes

Israeli airstrikes and artillery attacks killed at least nine Palestinians Friday in southern Gaza Strip, medical sources said.

Six people from a same family were killed and five others injured in an airstrike on their home in Rafah City, Xinhua reported citing the medics.

The situation in Gaza has dramatically worsened hours after a 72-hour UN-backed ceasefire came into force as Israeli artillery fire pounded Rafah City, killing and injuring dozens Palestinians.

Girl settles in Pak, father draws pension in her name

An FIR has been registered against a man here for allegedly drawing pension of his daughter who after taking volunteer retirement from forest department is now settled in Pakistan.

The woman Ladoo, now a Pakistani citizen, took volunteer retirement in August 2007 and settled in Pakistan with husband later.

However, her pension continued and his father Rajju Khan withdrew it till 2011 through bank, police said.

The matter came to light in May this year following which the collector ordered a probe which found his father and brother guilty.

Kerry condemns violation of Gaza ceasefire

US Friday condemned Friday the killing of Israeli soldiers and apparent abduction of another by the Palestinian militants that violated the ceasefire.

“It was an outrageous violation of the ceasefire negotiated over the past several days, and of the assurances given to the US and the United Nations,” John Kerry, US secretary of state, said in a statement.

After the horrific loss of life in this attack and its aftermath, it would be a tragedy if this outrageous attack leads to more suffering and loss of life on both sides of this conflict, Xinhua quoted Kerry as saying.

Hamas’s denies kidnapping Israeli soldier in Gaza

The armed wing of the Islamic Hamas movement, Qassam Brigades, denied Saturday kidnapping of an Israeli soldier in the Gaza Strip.

“Until now, we have no idea about the disappearance of the Israeli soldier,” Xinhua quoted the militant group as saying in a press statement.

“We do not know his whereabouts or the conditions of his disappearance,” the group said.
