Israeli shelling kills about 160 Palestinians; truce collapses

Massive shelling by Israel today killed at least 160 people across the Hamas-ruled Gaza following the collapse of a 72-hour truce shortly after it began, while two of its soldiers died and another was believed to have been abducted by the Palestinian militant group.

The humanitarian ceasefire – brokered by the US and the UN to end more than three weeks of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip – collapsed just two hours after it began this morning.

Within hours, heavy shelling resumed in Rafah and air raid sirens were heard on the Israeli side.

Wall collapse in Delhi claims four lives

Four people were killed on Friday evening when a wall of an under construction building in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar area collapsed.

A passerby told ANI, “I was passing through around 6.30 p.m. when I heard the voices and saw that a wall has collapsed. We started digging out and found four people struck down there. We couldn’t find out if they are alive or not, but two were badly injured.”

“Strangely the police and fire brigade reached on time and did the needful,” he added.

Jilted lover throws acid on woman in UP

A jilted lover allegedly threw acid on a woman in civil lines area here.

Irfan (25) allegedly threw acid on the woman in Kanshiram colony Friday in which she sustained 30 per cent burn injuries, Station House Officer Jasbeer Singh said Saturday.

He said that the woman, who separated from her husband, was having an affair with Irfan from more than a year.

The SHO said that on Friday Irfan called the woman to meet him, but she refused after which he attacked her.

The woman has been admitted to Sefai hospital.

(Siasat News): A wife committed suicide as she was fed up of the constant harassment of her husband. This incident occurred in Saifabad police limits.

As per the details, the deceased Priyanka, 26, was the wife of one Ajay of Chintal Basthi. She had overdosed the sleeping pills on July 25 and when her condition deteriorated she was admitted in a hospital where she died during the treatment.

UPSC row: Protest outside Rajnath Singh’s residence

A protest was staged outside the residence of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh by members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) over the ongoing UPSC row here on Saturday.

Mohit Sharma, a protester, belonging to the NSUI, told ANI, “Common students are not being allowed to protest. Were these the good days that were promised by the government? Don’t we have a right to agitate? Students are demanding changes in the CSAT and want the exam date to be postponed from August 24.”

Govt. plans to table insurance bill in Parliament on Monday, opposition for select committee vetting

The NDA Government plans to table the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, even as several opposition parties have indicated that they will move a motion in the Upper House of the Parliament to refer the Bill to a Select Committee.

The proposed Bill seeks to raise the ceiling of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the insurance sector from 26 percent at present to 49 percent.

The Bill has already been scrutinised by a Standing Committee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has, through a statement issued from his office, reportedly asked all government departments to allow self-certification/ attestation of documents and to reduce the use of affidavits in a bid to ease the hassles faced by the common man.

All ministries and departments at the Centre and in States have reportedly been asked to make a provision for the self-certification of documents in place of affidavits.

Landslide toll climbs to 75, 100 more people feared buried

With the recovery of five more bodies, the toll in the landslide catastrophe at Malin village rose to 75 today while 100 more persons were believed to be buried in the debris.

The dead included 37 women and 10 children, the District Control Room said today. Mass cremations of the victims are being carried out at the village after identification of bodies by relatives.

The rescue operations, which have been hampered by rain and inclement weather, entered the fourth day today after the July 30 disaster that buried 44 houses, as hopes of finding survivors faded with every passing hour.

The Metro rail services between Nagole-Mettuguda will become operational by Ugadi 2015. Managing Director Hyderabad Metro Company SVS Reddy told media persons during a governing council meeting of Institute Metro and Rail Technology that additional 4 railway bogies are required for Nagole-Mettuguda service. He told that the company has spend 4600 crore for the project while metro work will not be halted at any cost.

The Metro rail services are likely to be opened for commuter traffic in March 2015 as an ‘Ugadi’ gift.

Man arrested for raping 10-year-old daughter

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for raping his 10-year-old daughter and filming it on his mobile phone, police said Saturday.

The victim said her father raped her several times over the last few years and on many occasions also filmed the act, according to an FIR.

The father is a resident of Assnora, a hinterland town, located 20 kms north of Panaji.

Police officer Sandhya Gupta said the accused has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children Sexual Offences Act.

UN continues to seek truce in Gaza

The UN continues to seek a halt to the Gaza violence despite the breakdown of a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire.

“The ceasefire seems to have lasted for maybe 90 minutes this morning, a tragic loss of opportunity for both sides to end the cycle of fear and suffering,” Xinhua quoted UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman as saying.

“We need to get back to that.”

The UN said that it had received reports by midday in New York that more than 70 Palestinian civilians and two Israeli soldiers were killed and one Israeli soldier captured in Gaza.

Pakistan summons Afghan envoy over border attacks

Pakistan has summoned Afghanistan’s charge d’affaires over another cross-border attack by terrorists, officials said.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said a soldier was killed during “a sniper attack from the Afghan side of the border on a Pakistani military post near Ghakhai Pass in Bajaur Agency”, Xinhua reported.

“It was stressed to the charge d’affaires that the Afghan authorities must take concrete action to stop such incidents and prevent the recurrence of cross-border fire and physical attacks by terrorists operating from Afghan territory,” a foreign ministry statement said.

Elderly couple murdered on suspicion of witchcraft

A 22-year-old man was arrested in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district for hacking an elderly couple to death on suspicion of witchcraft, police said Saturday.

The incident took place at Dhanusahi village, over 300 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, Friday but came to light after the accused confessed to the crime at a police station.

Police officer Naba Kishor Das said the accused, Bira Singh Bari, suspected Ankula Purti, 65, and his wife Mukta, 60, of practicing witchcraft following the death of his two minor brothers and one sister in recent years.

Samsung to launch two new smartphones

Samsung Electronics will launch two new high-end smartphones in next six months.

Kim Hyun-joon, senior vice president at Samsung, told investors that one model will feature a large screen, while the other will be made using “new materials”.

He did not elaborate further on the design, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Samsung has hinted in the past that it could use bendable screens in future devices.

The new large-screen model could be the new Galaxy Note Phablet that is due for launch later this year.

According to LA County Sheriff sergeant Burton Brink, they received “several” calls from dissatisfied Facebook users seeking a solution to the error message they faced while logging into Facebook.

Kanpur Policeman Kisses Murder Accused on Forehead, Transferred

A senior police official probing the murder of a woman, daughter-in-law of a leading businessman of Uttar Pradesh, was taken off the investigation on Friday after he kissed the main accused, the woman’s husband, on the forehead.

The accused, Piyush Shyam Dasani, was also taken into remand by the police for questioning.

In the presence of media in Swaroop Nagar police station, Circle Officer (CO) R K Naik asked Dasani whether he would mend his ways. To this, Dasani replied in the affirmative.

Following this, Naik hugged and kissed him on his forehead while calling him a “good boy”.
