Sajid Nadiadwala’s directorial debut “Kick”, starring Salman Khan collected a total of Rs.178.28 crore in its first week.

The film, which was the awaited release for Eid this year, minted over Rs.80 crore in just three days, and it touched the Rs.100 crore mark even before the festival July 29.

“Kick” is also said to have pulled in audiences in Pakistan, registering approximately Rs.2 crore.

According to the study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, the active ingredient in chili peppers – produces chronic activation of a receptor on cells lining the intestines of mice, triggering a reaction that ultimately reduces the risk of colorectal tumors.

Paes, Sania to lead Indian challenge at Asian Games

Indian selectors reposed faith in Leander Paes as the 40-year-old veteran was today included in the Asian Games squad along with established stars Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna.

UPSC protest: Students block railway tracks in Bihar

Students led by All India Students’ Association (AISA) Saturday blocked railway tracks in Bihar’s Bhojpur and Darbhanga districts demanding scrapping of the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) from the UPSC entrance examination, police said.

“Students protesting against the CSAT format, stopped long route trains and sat on tracks at Ara railway station in Bhojpur and Darbhanga railway station,” a police officer said.

The CSAT is a conspiracy to sideline the Hindi-speaking students of north Indian states from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, the students said.

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said India’s growth story was only unfolding and the private sector, including overseas investors, had much to look forward to in areas like infrastructure that need billions of dollars of investment.

“The Planning Commission had earlier estimated that investments in infrastructure will have to expand to as much as $1 trillion in the 12th Plan period (2012-2017) to enhance connectivity and commerce within the country,” the president said.

Seeking long-term extension of her residence permit, controversial author Taslima Nasreen Saturday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Nasreen had expressed her anguish after the government Wednesday refused her a one-year visa giving instead a temporary permission to stay in India for two months.

“I met Singh today (Saturday) and he assured me that my stay in India will be extended. I gave him my book ‘Wo Andhere Din’ (Those Dark Days) and in return he said my dark days are over,” Nasreen told IANS.

Jeddah-Calicut AI plane’s tyre bursts while landing

Passengers of an Air India plane from Jeddah had a narrow escape after one of the plane’s rear tyres burst during landing at nearby Karipur International Airport today.

All the 369 passengers and the crew on board Jeddah-Calicut AI 962 flight are safe, an Air India official said, after the plane landed at 8.30 AM.

The incident occurred at the turning pad area of the runway, the official said. The same plane is supposed to fly back to Jeddah in the evening.

Gaza toll escalates to 1654

The number of Palestinians killed in Gaza in the Israeli offensive jumped to 1,654 Saturday, most of them civilians, a health ministry spokesman said.

More than 8,900 others have been injured in Israel’s military campaign which entered the 25th day, Xinhua reported.

Two-thirds of the dead and wounded were civilians, including women, children and the elderly, said Ashraf al-Qedra, the health ministry spokesman in Gaza.

Toll in Taiwan gas leak rises to 27

The toll in Taiwan’s underground gas explosions has risen to 27, the island’s emergency operation authority said Saturday.

The blasts, that hit Kaohsiung city at about midnight Thursday, left another 284 injured, 56 of them critically, Xinhua reported.

With rain starting early morning Saturday, it added to the difficulty of the rescuers.

Kaohsiung government has resettled more than 900 residents, while electricity supply to 12,000 households and gas supply to about 23,000 houses has been cut.

Israel-Palestine must implement Egypt truce plan: Sisi

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi Saturday said that an Egyptian truce plan provided a “real chance” to end the 25-day Gaza conflict that has killed 1,654 Palestinians in the coastal enclave and urged both Israel and the Palestinians to implement it.

“The Egyptian proposal is the real chance to find a solution to the crisis in Gaza and to end the bloodshed,” Xinhua reported citing Sisi as saying in a joint conference with visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Indian powerlifter Sakina wins bronze

Indian powerlifter Sakina Khatun won the bronze in the women’s lightweight (up to 61kg) category to give the country its first medal of day 10 of the 2014 Commonwealth Games here Saturday.

Sakina lifted a total weight of 88.2 kg to finish third.

Esther Oyema (136kg) of Nigeria took home the gold while England’s Natalie Blake took home the silver with a 100.2kg lift.

India with the latest addidtion of medal take their tally to 52, including 13 golds, 23 silvers and 16 bronzes. The Games conclude Sunday.

Telangana constitutes higher education council

Amid a continuing row with Andhra Pradesh over admissions to professional courses, the Telangana government Saturday constituted the Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE).

The government issued an order adapting the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) Act, 1988. It argued that under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, it is empowered to make adaptations and modifications of any law made in united Andhra Pradesh.

Policeman, gangster killed in gunfight near Hyderabad

Two people including a police constable were killed and a sub-inspector injured in an exchange of gunfire between gangsters and police near Hyderabad, police said here Saturday.

One of the gangsters was killed in the firing that took place late Friday night while three others managed to escape.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex snapped its last two-week gaining spree, tumbling 646 points to end below 26,000 level at almost three-week low of 25,480.94 on cautious approach adopted by operators and retail investors ahead of the RBI’s monetary policy next week.

Rajasthan viewed an out of the ordinary incident of robbery which took place in the Sabzi Mandi of Dausa district.

A group of burglars decamped with nearly 80 kg of tomatoes from various vegetables shops in Sabzi Mandi. The strange thing about the robbery is the thieves didn’t touch the cash inside counters of the shops.

The incident took place on Wednesday night, according to police.

On Thursday morning, when vendors and shopkeepers opened there shops, they were surprised to found broken weighing machines and tomatoes on the floor.

Indians safe, less than 10 percent want to return: Libyan Ambassador

Less than 10 percent Indians living in Libya have expressed a desire to leave the country and that demonstrates there is “no serious threat to their safety,” Libya’s ambassador to India Ali Al-Isawi said Friday.

He said that the North African country was “committed” to provide “any kind of help” to Indian nationals, as weeks of inter-militia fighting in Libya’s capital Tripoli and Benghazi spiral alarmingly, leaving more than a hundred dead.
