Congress workers burnt images of national leaders, alleges BJP

Gujarat BJP today threatened to drag Congress to court alleging that the party workers had burnt photographs of national leaders printed in a book written by right wing activist Dinanath Batra during a protest here.

Congress workers held demonstrations here yesterday protesting against Gujarat government’s decision to introduce books written by Batra, who is associated with RSS, as supplementary reading in schools in the BJP-ruled state.

As part of the protest, they burnt a copy of a book penned by Batra, which contained photos of the national leaders.

Banner showing Sri Lankan President seeking Jayalalithaa’s forgiveness appears

A large banner, portraying Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa as seeking forgiveness of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the derogatory article against her in a defence website, today appeared at a main junction in Mettupalayam, about 40 km from here.

The banner, written in Tamil and showing Rajapakse with folded hands, read “Amma, I have made a big mistake. Please forgive me and give me life,” police said.

The 20 feet X 10 feet banner has the names of Town AIADMK, Amma Peravai, Students wing, trade union wing and AIADMK Farmers association among others, they said.

Pay Rs 50K to wife, child if you want bail: HC to man

The Delhi High Court has asked a man to give Rs 50,000 to his estranged wife and minor daughter as a pre-condition for granting him anticipatory bail in a dowry harassment case registered against him.

Justice Pratibha Rani granted the man two week’s protection from being arrested and directed him to pay the amount within the period.

Curfew to be relaxed in Saharanpur for 12 hours todayi

Curfew will be relaxed in violence-hit Saharanpur for 12 hours on Sunday, an official said on Saturday.

“Curfew will be relaxed from 7 am to 7 pm on Sunday,” Saharanpur District Magistrate Sandhya Tiwari said here.

The situation is getting normal in the district rapidly, she added.

Curfew was clamped on last Saturday in Saharanpur in the wake of clashes between two communities over a land dispute, which left three persons dead and over 30 injured.

As many as 165 shops and handcarts and 42 vehicles were set ablaze during the violence.

An Israeli soldier feared captured by Hamas militants has been killed in action during Israel’s operation in the Gaza Strip, the army said Sunday.

A special committee led by the Israel Defence Forces chief Rabbi announced the death of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, who was killed in a battle in the Gaza Strip Friday, the army said in a statement.

China’s non-manufacturing PMI goes down

China’s non-manufacturing activity has slightly slowed in July, with the sector’s purchasing managers’ index (PMI) retreating to 54.2 from 55 in June, official data showed Sunday.

The non-manufacturing PMI, compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, tracks activity in sectors, including construction, software, aviation, railway transport and real estate, reports Xinhua.

The reading marked the lowest level in six months, but still well above the 50-threshold that demarcates expansion and contraction.

PM Modi leaves for Nepal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday left for a two-day visit to Nepal, the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to the Himalayan nation in 17 years.

Ahead of his visit, Modi said Saturday that he was “excited” about his visit that reflects the two nations’ “shared heritage of nature, history, culture, spiritualism and religion”.

The visit is part of the new government’s initiative to forge closer ties with the neighbourhood and comes two weeks after Modi visited Bhutan, in his first bilateral visit after he was sworn in as the prime minister.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said steps taken by the NDA government would yield good results in the next few months and it will not hesitate to take firm decision for long-term welfare of the country.

Tension in Kurukshetra as HSGPC lays siege to gurdwara

Tension prevailed in Haryana’s Kurukshetra town Saturday as leaders and supporters of the newly-constituted Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) laid siege to a big gurdwara.

Heavy police deployment was seen near the gurdwara as leaders of the HSGPC and their supporters marched towards Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi and tried to take control of the shrine, one of the state’s biggest, in Kurukshetra, about 110 km from here.

Those trying to take control of the shrine broke two police barriers put in their route.

Petroleum ministry mulling lower gas price

The petroleum ministry is considering a new price for domestic gas that would be lower than the $8.4 per unit reached by the formula suggested by the C. Rangarajan panel constituted by the earlier UPA government.

On the related issue of allowing the Reliance Industries (RIL)-led consortium the new price for gas from its eastern offshore fields, the ministry is considering the option of making the company eligible for charging new price after it makes up a supply shortfall.

Russia slams EU’s lifting of arms ban on Ukraine

Russia Saturday said the European Union (EU) applied double standards after it decided to lift restrictions on military-related exports to Ukraine.

Leaders of the EU member states “quietly agreed” on lifting restrictions on exports of gear to Ukraine that can be used for internal repressions, Xinhua quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

“Exports of military technologies and equipment have also been allowed,” the ministry added.

Indian boxer Vijender settles for silver

Indian boxer Vijender Singh had to settle for the silver medal losing 1-2 to England’s Anthony Fowler in the final of the men’s 75 kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SSE Hydro here Saturday.

Vijender, an Olympic bronze medallist, lost the first two rounds 26-30, 27-30. He came back strongly in the final round to win it 30-27. The Indian also suffered a knock-down during the bout.

Vijender had won the bronze four years ago and silver in the 2006 Melbourne Games.

37 killed in China terror attack

At least 37 civilians were killed and another 13 injured in a terrorist attack earlier this week in China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Xinhua reported Sunday.

The attack took place in Shache county of Kashgar prefecture. Police gunned down 59 terrorists and arrested 215 others, the regional government was quoted as saying after a meeting Saturday presided by Zhang Chunxian, secretary of the regional committee of the Communist Party of China.

The case was first reported Tuesday, but no figures were given except that dozens of people died.

Triple jumper Arpinder clinches bronze

Arpinder Singh signed off India’s show in athletics by winning the men’s triple jump bronze at the Commonwealth Games here Saturday.

South Africa’s Khotso Mokoena won the gold with a season best performance of 17.2 metres while the silver went to Nigeria’s Tosin Oke, who also earned a season best jump of 16.84 metre at the Hampden Park Stadium.

The Amritsar born Arpinder finished a close third with a best leap of 16.63m which he achieved on his first attempt.
