Prof. Koneru Ramakrishna Rao, Hon’ble Chancellor, GITAM University has been selected to receive the prestigious Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) – ‘National Fellowship’. The aim of this fellowship is to assist young scholars who have the potential and competence for research to work full time on their approved research themes and to support doctoral students to pursue and complete their research work. Prof. Ramakrishna Rao is also heading the Center for Gandhian Studies of GITAM University, which carries out advanced research in the areas of peace and nonviolence.

The CBI Thursday filed a case against former disinvestment secretary Pradip Baijal for selling a Rajasthan hotel, under the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), on lesser value, causing an estimated loss of Rs.143.48 crore to the government.

Baijal, a former Indian Administrative Service officer, has been named in the first information report (FIR) along with private firm Lazard India’s then managing director Ashish Guha, Kanti Karamsey and Company owner Kantilal Karamsey Vikamsey, and the authorised representative of Bharat Hotel which owns Hotel Lalit.

Poultry industry misleading people: CSE

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) Thursday rubbished claims made by the poultry industry that antibiotic residues found in Indian chicken were lower than the EU standard and accused it of “misleading” the people.

The CSE reiterated its earlier stand that large-scale use of antibiotics in the poultry industry has led to antibiotic resistance in Indians who are falling prey to many otherwise curable ailments.

“The poultry industry is misleading the public by saying that residues found in Indian chicken are lower than the EU standards,” the CSE said in a statement.

One stop centre for sexual assault victims in Delhi

Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung Thursday inaugurated the first One Stop Centre at the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for victims of sexual assault in the capital.

The One Stop Centre will meet the immediate needs of rape victims.

All services, including medical treatment, forensic evidence collection, recording of statement and registration of first information report (FIR) by police and psycho-social counselling will be made available to the victims under one roof, said a statement.

Jung said such centres will be set up in all hospitals of Delhi.

Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt said here Thursday that Indian wrestlers have it in them to win four-to-five medals, including gold, at the upcoming Asian Games.

“We did well at the Commonwealth Games. We are working hard and hopefully will do better in the Asian Games. We can win four-to-five medals including the gold. I hope the practice we have put in bears fruit,” said Yogeshwar, who won a freestyle bronze at the 2006 Doha Asiad.

The 31-year-old said that the Asiad is a much tougher event than Commonwealth Games, where he has won two golds.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao Thursday asked the state police chief to consider taking action against films and television serials portraying violence against women.

The chief minister feels that portrayal of violence and atrocities against women in the movies and television soaps amount to encouraging crime against women and has directed Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Sharma to look into the possibility of taking action against such movies and serials.

A 29-year-old cab driver has been arrested for molesting a class 5 girl student, police said Thursday.

Dharmendra was arrested Wednesday night from Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi, after a complaint was filed by the girl’s parents at Shakarpur police station.

The son of Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has been booked for rape and cheating following a complaint by Kannada film actor Maithreyi, police said Thursday. The Gowdas denied the charges, even as Bangalore police summoned Maithreyi for recording her statement.

The Delhi unit of the BJP Thursday asked all three municipal corporations under it to provide clean drinking water and separate toilets for girl students in all schools under their jurisdiction.
