Three held for gang rape of Bengal housewife

Three people were arrested Sunday for allegedly drugging and raping a housewife in West Bengal, police said, adding the prime suspect is still on the run.

Opposition parties attacked the Trinamool Congress over the deteriorating crime scene, as the Bengal government asked police to file a report.

The incident happened in Maheshtala of South 24-Parganas district, some 12 km from here.

According to police, the woman was drugged and raped Thursday night while she was returning home in an auto.

MH17: Fresh violence in eastern Ukraine halts crash probe

Fresh spurt of violence in Eastern Ukraine forced an international investigation team to stop operations at the MH17 crash site. Alexander Hug, the deputy chief monitor with the Ukraine mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), said that sounds of artillery being fired were heard at a distance of about two kilometers while the operations were going on and the team had to leave the site immediately as it was too close to continue, reported the BBC. Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 went down on July 17 killing all the 298 people onboard. (ANI)

AAP rally demands Delhi re-polls

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Sunday held a rally to press its demand that the assembly be dissolved and re-election be held in Delhi.

“We are gathered here to demand re-election in Delhi. The BJP and the Congress are running away from the election,” AAP leader Manish Sisodia said at the Jantar Mantar in the heart of the city.

While addressing thousands of people, Sosodia said both the parties are scared of losing the Delhi assembly elections.

Sisodia said we will continue to come here till the demands are met.

Supreme Court judge Justice A R Dave had yesterday said Indians should revert to their ancient traditions and texts such as Mahabharat and Bhagavad Gita and they should be introduced to children at an early age.

UN-run school in Gaza hit by a missile killing 7

Despite immense flak drawn by Israeli Army over attack on a UN-run school in Gaza last week, another UN school in southern Gaza is said to have been hit by a missile, killin seven and injuring dozens in the town of Rafah, the Reuters reported.

The Israeli military declined immediate comment.

A missile launched by an aircraft struck the entrance to the school in the town of Rafah, the witnesses and medics said.

Hundreds of Palestinians in the area, where the Israeli military has been battling militants, had been sheltering in the school.

Modi condoles Nepal tragedy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday offered condolences after a landslide killed at least eight people in Nepal.

The disaster hurled huge amounts of mud and rocks blocking the Bhotekoshi river Saturday. A small village was buried and at least 150 people were reported missing.

After the landslide, the river formed a large lake in Sindhupalchowk district, about 60 km from Kathmandu.

Modi’s statement came shortly after his arrival here on a two-day visit, Nepal foreign ministry said.

Truck driver runs over Sikh man after racist abuse

A 29-year old Sikh man is in critical condition after he was hit by a pickup truck here and dragged nearly 30 feet following an argument between him and the driver who allegedly hurled racist slur at him and his friend.

Sandeep Singh, father of two, was with his friend Baldey Singh when he was hit by a pickup truck late Tuesday night. Sandeep is in critical condition at the hospital.

Rights group Sikh Coalition has called for a hate crime investigation into the incident.

37m yr old fossil of ‘giant penguin’ found near Antarctica

Researchers have discovered a fossil, which provided the proof that ‘colossal penguins’ existed around 37 to 40 million years ago, on a small island near Antarctica.

The discovery disclosed about the penguin species, known as ‘Palaeeudyptes Klekowskii’, which was 6ft 6ins high and weighed around 115 kilos, Metro.co.uk reported.

A wing bone of the giant extinct penguin along with a 9.1 centimetre long tarsometatarsus, which would have been formed by the fusion of ankle and foot bones, were discovered by Carolina Acosta Hospitaleche from the La Plata Museum in Argentina.

A hybrid baby goat-sheep; geep, named ‘Butterfly’ for her large black spot, has recently taken birth with the feet and face of a goat, but the wool and tail of a sheep.

Butterfly, whose mother was a sheep and whose father was a pygmy goat, was born at My Petting Zoo in Scottsdale, Metro.co.uk reported.

Priscilla Motola, the owner of the zoo, said that she and her children went to feed the animals, when her son found what he believed was a newborn goat, even though all the expecting female goats had already given birth.

DLF eyes Rs 200cr annual rent from ‘Mall of India’ in Noida

India’s biggest realty firm DLF is expecting Rs 200 crore rental income per year from its large luxury shopping mall in Noida to be launched early next year.

‘DLF Mall of India’ with 2 million sq ft of leasable area is being developed in Noida in the National Capital Region at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore and touted as one of the biggest in the country.

DLF has leased about 90 percent of the area and the mall is expected to be launched in February-March 2015, sources said, adding that more than 200 brands have signed so far.

Shoppers in Delhi are more e-commerce savvy compared to peers in other metros including Mumbai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, according to a survey.

As per the Assocham survey, Delhiites recorded 67 percent rise in online trends over the regular shopping than last year — the highest compared to all other cities in India. Delhi is followed by Mumbai (60 percent), Ahmedabad (52 percent) and Bangalore (50 percent) in their preference for online shopping.

Interestingly, the survey found that most respondents are working and shopping at the same time between 12 pm and 4 pm on a working day.

18 children suffer adverse reaction after being given injection in hospital in Bhiwandi

18 children reportedly suffered adverse reactions after they were given injections by the staff nurse at Indira Gandhi Memorial hospital in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.

According to the father of one of the children, “My daughter was recovering from illness and was fine till the injection was administered by the sister at 10 pm in the night. About half an hour after the injection was given, her body turned cold, she became restless and her limbs became stiff. We informed the doctor about this, the medical staff gave some medicine after which my child became normal.”
