Trinamool labour leader jailed on murder charge

A West Bengal court Sunday sent a leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress’s labour arm, arrested for allegedly murdering an Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) contractor, to seven days’ police custody.

Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) leader Kedar Pal was arrested Friday for allegedly murdering Ashim Mukherjee who supplied electrical goods to ECL colliery in Jambad in Burdwan district.

“Pal was presented before the Durgapur sub-divisional court which remanded him to seven days police custody,” said an officer of Andal police station.

150 killed, 1,300 injured in strong quake in southwest China

At least 150 people were killed, 1,300 injured and another 180 others were issing after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China’s Yunnan
Province today causing widespread death and destruction.

The strong quake hit at 4:30 pm Beijing time (0830 GMT) at a depth of 12 kms with the epicentre in Longtoushan township, 23 kms southwest of the county seat of Ludian, Zhaotong City.

More than 120 residents were killed, over 180 were missing and 1,300 injured in Ludian County, according to the local government. It said more than 12,000 houses were toppled and 30,000 damaged.

Bhiwandi children develop complications after injections

Eighteen children who were being treated for fever at IGM Government Hospital in Bhiwandi town last night, developed complications, hospital sources said here today.

The leader of the house in the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BMNC) Khalid Guddu expressed total displeasure about the manner in which the hospital is being managed and told reporters today that he had demanded an enquiry into its affairs.

Last night, children from the town aged between four and 12 were admitted to the hospital to be treated for common ailments like fever, cold and flu.

Death toll in China’s factory blast goes up to 71

The death toll from the deadly explosion at a metal factory in east China’s Jiangsu Province rose to 71 today as doctors battled to save the lives of 187 injured workers.

Initial investigations indicated that sparks had ignited dust yesterday at the car wheel polishing plant in Kunshan, 50km west of Shanghai, sate-run CCTV said.

The blast destroyed the roof of the sprawling factory which supplied materials to General Motors and was owned by
the Taiwanese company Zhongrong Plating.

Afghan vice president accused of election frau

The team of Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah Sunday accused Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili of siding with opponent Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and involvement in electoral fraud.

A member from Abdullah’s team played an audio tape as an evidence regarding Khalili’s involvement in the alleged electoral fraud, Xinhua reported.

However, Khalili has rejected the claim and tweeted saying, “This tape is a fake.”

“Khalili had said that the government, the president, the election commissions were in favour of Abdullah,” the member said.

Doctor shot dead

A doctor was shot dead by two unidentified persons in Civil Lines area of Badaun district, police said here today.

Neelratna Vishwas was shot dead by two unidentified persons while he was on his way back home after closing his
clinic last night, a police spokesperson said.

Vishwas was rushed to a district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, police said.

A case has been registered and efforts are on to identify the assailants, they said.

17 killed, 57 injured in separate accidents in Egypt

At least 17 people were killed and 57 others injured in three separate road accidents today which also involved vehicles of security officials in upper Egypt governorates.

Seven people were killed in a car crash in Minya governorate while 13 others were injured, according to Osama
Metwali, the head of Minya Security Directorate.

In another incident, that took place in the upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag, four civilians were killed on a
crash between a private car and lorry which belonged to the security forces.

24 conscript were injured in the crash, a security official said.

Militants seize two more towns in Iraq

The Islamic State (IS) militants captured the town of Sinjar in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh, a day after they seized the town of Zumar, a security official said Sunday.

The IS militants entered Sinjar, some 100 km west of Nineveh’s capital city of Mosul, early Sunday after clashes with the Kurdish security forces, the Peshmerga, the official told Xinhua.

“The militants raised the black flag of the IS on the buildings of the local government and the town’s municipality,” the official said.

At least 150 people were killed Sunday when a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit China’s Yunnan province.

The quake occurred at 4.30 p.m. in Yunnan’s Zhaotong city, Xinhua reported.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC), the earthquake occured at a depth of 12 km and with the epicentre in Longtoushan township, 23 km southwest of the county seat of Ludian county, Zhaotong city.

Angry with his wife for “chatting with other men” over phone and social networking websites, a man allegedly pushed her in the Ganges leading to her death.

The accused – Ravi Chaurasia – married the victim, Rubi, after his first wife left him along with their baby two years ago, police said today.

Chaurasia claimed Rubi used to chat with other men over phone and Facebook which led to frequent fights between them.

During one such fight yesterday on Ganga Barrage, Ravi ushed her in the river after she threatened to jump into it.

Gaza toll escalates to 1766

The Israeli offensive which started July 8 on the Gaza Strip has killed 1,766 people and left 9,500 injured, the health ministry said Sunday.

“Two-thirds of the victims are civilians, including women, children and the elderly,” Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the health ministry in Gaza, Ashraf al-Qedra said that 54 Palestinians were killed Sunday since midnight due to air strikes and shelling by tanks on various areas in the Gaza Strip.

Godhra case: HC allows Centre to withdraw appeal on panel

The Gujarat High Court has allowed the Centre to withdraw its appeal against an earlier order which had termed as illegal the Justice U C Banerjee Commission appointed by the then UPA government in 2004 to to probe the Godhra train burning incident.

Launch of Apple’s set-top box pushed to 2015

Apple’s long-rumoured set-top box will not be launched until 2015 due to the company’s inability to strike a deal with the cable providers, said reports.

The cable providers allegedly said that they were concerned that the tech giant might gradually change the cable providers into a TV servicing company for consumers.

According to the Verge, Comcast and Time Warner Cable collaboration is also one of the issues that is delaying the launch of Apple set-top boxes.
