Four Hindu pilgrims electrocuted in Bihar

At least four Hindu pilgrims were killed and 12 others injured when a high tension wire fell on a bus in Bihar’s Banka district Sunday, police said.

A district police official said nearly 50 ‘kanwariyas’ or Hindu pilgrims were travelling in the bus when the incident occurred near Sahebganj Bazar. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.

Angry over the incident, local residents blocked roads and attacked an electricity sub-station to protest.

Palestinian envoy seeks clear Indian stand against Israeli aggression

Palestinian Ambassador to India Adli Shaban Hassan Sadeq Sunday urged the Indian government to take a clear stand against Israel’s aggression in Gaza and support the cause of Palestinians.

He also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the issue with US President Barrack Obama during his upcoming visit to America.

Addressing a news conference here, the Palestinian ambassador and Mazin Al-Masoudi, In-charge, League of Arab States Mission, wanted India to pressurize the US to strongly condemn Israel’s atrocious stance on Palestine and prevent it from further aggressions.

Hamas delegation in Cairo for Gaza truce talks

A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo Sunday for talks with Egyptian mediators on a possible ceasefire in Gaza.

The six-member delegation is led by senior Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq, and came to Egypt after a short visit to Qatar, Xinhua quoted official news agency MENA as saying.

In mid-July, Egypt proposed an initiative for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

The initiative was rejected by Hamas which demanded a comprehensive solution and an end to Israel’s six-year-long blockade of the enclave.

Modi gives autograph to a girl in Nepal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today gave an autograph to a 10-year-old Indian girl here, who is seeking to set a new world record for the maximum number of autographs from world-famous personalities.

Manashi Sharma, a fifth grader at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, got the autograph from Modi who wrote: “Serve humanity when you grow up, little girl; because this is the best work, service is religion”.

The girl had also taken an autograph from External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj when she visited Nepal a few days back.

An FIR was lodged today for model code violation against Ram Vilas Saday, the Samajwadi Party candidate from Raj Nagar assembly bypoll in Bihar’s Madhubani district, a police officer said.

Modi, Nepal PM seek to promote ties, cooperation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held one-on-one talks with his Nepali counterpart Sushil Koirala at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at Singhdurbar here Sunday afternoon, officials said.

It’s Hindi, Hindi… all the way

Hindi was the lingua franca as Narendra Modi became the first Indian prime minister to visit Nepal in 17 years, holding talks and addressing MPs in that language.

“Hindi was used in all conversations between Indian and Nepalese leaders including bilateral talks,” Foreign Minister Mahendra Pandey told IANS.

Pak couple murdered in honour killing case

In yet another case of honour killing, a young woman and her husband have been brutally murdered for marrying against the wishes of her family in Punjab, police said today.

According to police, Zaheer Iqbal of Ashraf Town Chakwal, some 300 kilometres from here, had an affair with Mariam Bibi of neighbouring town Karar. Both were in their early 20s.

Zaheer’s family sent marriage proposal to her family but they did not agree to it.

About two weeks ago Zaheer and Mariam contracted court marriage.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the hearts of millions in Nepal Sunday when he began his address to parliament in Nepali, describing himself as “a good friend of Nepal”.

Taking most people by surprise over his choice of language, Modi told the country’s parliament that he was very happy to be in Nepal.

“Years back, I came here for pilgrimage. There is a popular saying that once you visit Nepal, your entire life will be changed,” Modi said, as MPs clapped.

Former “American Idol” contestant Michael Johns has died from a blood clot in his ankle.

An administrator of his fan page, Michael Johns Online on micro blogging site Twitter, confirmed the news of the Australian-born singer’s death on Friday, reports people.com.

“It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns,” the administrator tweeted Saturday.

“Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend,” his family said.

Wanted miscreant arrested by police

A miscreant, wanted by police in over a dozen criminal offences including loot of over Rs 12 lakh from a post office, was arrested following an encounter in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district today, a police
officer said.

Subhraj Mahato, who was sustained injury in the leg in the encounter, was rushed to M G M Hospital, where he was
admitted, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Chandil), Vimal Kumar.

Kumar said Mahato and one of his accomplice Vikas Das have fired six rounds on police team, which retaliated with
three found firing in self-defence.

HSGPC continues siege of Kurukshetra gurdwara

Members of the newly-constituted Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) Sunday continued their siege of Kurukshetra’s Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi on the second day of their bid to take over the Sikh shrine.

India men’s hockey team lose to Australia, settle for silver

India men’s hockey team lost 0-4 to Australia in the final and had to be content with a silver medal on the final day of the 20th Commonwealth Games at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre here Sunday.

Two goals on either side of the break gave the Australians their fifth consecutive Commonwealth gold.

Drag flicker Chris Ciriello scored a hat-trick of penalty corner goals while Eddie Ockenden chipped in with one.

Australia had beaten India 8-0 in the final in Delhi four years ago, resulting in India’s only previous hockey medal, a silver, in the Commonwealth Games.

Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has made a bid to buy a mountain in Britain sparking protests from the locals, media reported.

The London-based NRI businessman has bid over 1.75 million pounds ($2.94 million) to purchase “Blencathra” mountain, also known as Saddleback, lying in Northern fells mountain range in Britain’s Lake district, the dailymail reported Saturday.
