Man arrested for murdering daughter

A man was arrested Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district for murdering his eight-year-old daughter, police said.

The man, who slit the girl’s throat, was arrested from Dharna (Mendhar) village in Poonch, a senior police officer told IANS here.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the accused slit the throat of his daughter with a sharp edged weapon. The exact motive of the murder is being established,” the officer said.

Passenger train temporarily cancelled for 3 months

To facilitate maintenance of track and bridges, the Palani-Dindigul-Palani passenger would be temporarily cancelled on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for three months.

The cancellation would be from August 4 to Nov 3, a Railways press release said here today.

12 AP pilgrims suffer food poisoning in Kolkatta

As many as 12 of the 45 persons on a Kasi Pilgrimage from Nellore and Prakasam district have taken ill with food poisoning after they ate at a hotel near the Howrah Railway station.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu directed the Chief Secretary and other officials at Delhi to monitor help and medicare to the pilgrims. While the 12 sick persons have been admitted to Apollo Hospital at Kolkatta, one other pilgrim has been admitted at the Marwadi Hospital, near Howrah.

CPI-M to take action against ‘idle’ members in Bengal

The CPI-M Sunday said it will take action, including expulsion, against at least 1,000 of its members in West Bengal for not working for the party in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Communist Party of India-Marxist’s (CPI-M) North 24 Parganas district committee secretary Gautam Deb also said the party will be taking a host of initiatives, including organising 1,000 road-shows and meetings as well as constituting strong social media teams across the district, with an eye to the 2016 assembly polls.

IS militants capture dam, towns in northern Iraq

The Islamic State (IS) militants Sunday seized Iraq’s largest dam near Mosul, along with many nearby towns, in fierce clashes with the Kurdish forces in northern Nineveh province of the country.

Dozens of militants seized a strategically located dam on the Tigris River, 70 km north of Nineveh’s capital Mosul, without fighting with the Kurdish security forces, known as Peshmerga, who were controlling the area, Xinhua reported citing a source as saying.

Women sweep Gujarati literary awards for 2013

Women literary figures bagged the lion’s share of Maharashtra State Gujarati Sahitya Academy Awards (MSGSAA) for Gujarati literature published during 2013, an official said here Sunday.

MSGSAA executive president Hemraj Shah, announcing the prestigious awards, said that of the nine awards in various categories, women bagged seven.

The awards shall be presented at a function here Aug 24 on the occasion of World Gujarati Day.

The Chunilal Madia Award for Best Novel went to Jitendra Dave for his work “Udayachal No Surya”, Shah said.

Sunni insurgents seize small towns in Iraq’s north

Militants with the Islamic State extremist group today seized two small towns in northern Iraq after driving out Kurdish security forces, further expanding the territories under their control, officials and residents said.

The fresh gains by the Sunni extremist militants have forced thousands of residents to flee from the religiously mixed towns of Zumar and Sinjar, toward the northern self-ruled Kurdish region, the United Nations said. Some of them were trapped in an open rugged area, it added.

Cyberabad Police has formed three special teams to nab the leader of a fake currency gang and its other members wanted in connection with the killing of a police constable and injuring a sub-inspector in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district on Friday, police said today.

Maharashtra landslide toll climbs to 103, 130 still missing

The death toll in Maharashtra’s worst-ever landslide in Pune district’s Malin village climbed to 103 Sunday with another 21 bodies recovered from the debris in the past 24 hours, while another 130 villagers were still trapped or missing, an official said Sunday.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies have rescued 23 people till now, including the youngest – a three-month old boy Rudra – from under the muck and debris, said NDRF chief commandant Alok Avasthy.

Heavy rain displaces thousands in Odisha town

Heavy rain in an Odisha town has forced thousands of people to take shelter in relief camps after rain water flooded streets and homes Sunday, an official said.

“The district headquarters town of Sambalpur, about 320 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, and its nearby areas received 380 mm rain, probably the highest any place recorded in the state this rainy season,” district emergency officer N.R. Das told IANS.

“The rainwater flooded roads and low-lying areas of the town after heavy downpour.

“‘Lootera’ was a learning experience for me. The film had recovered its money, but it had mixed response. As far as awards are concerned, I am feeling bad for Sonakshi as her performance was outstanding and she deserved an award for it. However, the nominations were decided by the jury members,” said Motwane.
