Rajya Sabha likely to take up insurance amendment bill Monday

The insurance amendment bill, which could not be taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, is to be taken up Monday, official sources said.

The upper house members had sought time to study the proposed changes in the bill, that include increase in the foreign investment limit for the sector to 49 percent from the current 26 percent, approved by the cabinet last month.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Sunday appealed to opposition parties to cooperate in the successful passage of the insurance amendment bill.

China quake toll rises to 367

At least 367 people have been killed and 1,881 others injured after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake rattled southwest China’s Yunnan province Sunday, rescuers said.

In Zhaotong city, the quake has killed 296 people and injured 1,591 in Ludian county. It has also left 60 dead and 193 injured in Qiaojia county, and caused another death in the city’s Zhaoyang district, Xinhua reported.

In Huize county of Qujing city, the quake has killed 10 people and injured 97 others.

UN condemns Israeli strike on shelter, toll reaches 1,766 in Gaza

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Sunday condemned the Israeli shelling on a UN shelter in Gaza, housing nearly 3,000 refugees, as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged world powers to pressure Israel into agreeing to a ceasefire to end the 27-day-long conflict that has claimed lives of 1,766 Palestinians.

“The secretary general strongly condemns the killing of at least 10 Palestinian civilians in shelling outside of an UNRWA school in Rafah providing shelter to thousands of civilians,” Xinhua quoted a spokesperson of Ban as saying in a statement.

Palestine seeks progressive ties with Israel, says envoy

Palestine is ready to establish a progressive relationship with Israel if it agrees to peacefully co-exist with Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, Palestinian Ambassador to India Adli Shaban Hasan Sadeq said today.

“Israel must end its criminal warfare. Palestine is ready to establish a progressive relationship with Israel if it agrees for peaceful coexistence with Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine,” he said in a statement issued here by the Indo-Arab League Hyderabad at a press conference here.

Majority supports permanent NATO presence in Lithuania: Poll

The majority of Lithuanians support permanent NATO presence in Lithuania, according to a poll by the ministry of defence of the Baltic country.

According to the poll results, about 68 percent of those polled agree to permanent NATO presence, Xinhua reported.

About 85 percent of those polled held the idea that Lithuania’s security was enhanced due to NATO’s deployment of troops in the Baltic region.

Joining NATO in 2004, Lithuania’s membership in the military bloc was supported by 83 percent of those polled.

Commonwealth Games end with a colourful closing ceremony

The curtains came down on the 2014 Commonwealth Games with a colourful ceremony that witnessed some power packed performances by famous Scottish singer Lulu, pop band Deacon Blue, Australian singer Kylie Minogue and more than 2,000 performers Sunday night at the Hampden Park, Scotland’s National Stadium.

Themed ‘All Back To Ours’, the 90-minute closing ceremony depicted a “typical night out in Glasgow”.

The ceremony at the packed 40,000-seater Hampden Park, which hosted the athletics events, got off to a rocking start with Scottish music artists singing their smash hits.

US offers help to China for quake relief

The White House Sunday offered condolences over loss of lives in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan, where a strong earthquake befell earlier in the day, saying the US was ready to help.

“The United States offers sincere condolences to all those who lost loved ones in the Aug 3 earthquake in southwestern China,” Xinhua quoted National Security Council spokesperson Bernadette Meehan as saying in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives, those injured or displaced, and all the people of China on this difficult day,” she added.

Prominent Shia cleric Kalbe Jawwad on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the assets of SP leader and UP Minister Azam Khan.

“Azam got valuable properties of the Waqf sold in Rampur fort,” he alleged at a press conference while demanding a CBI probe into the assets of Khan.

The cleric’s allegations came a day after Azam said when the Samajwadi Party assumed office, he wrote a letter for a CBI inquiry into sale of properties of Waqf.

Congress leader’s son rapes a 21-year-old woman, probe on

A 21-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped by a local Congress leader’s son in Meerut, police said on Sunday.

The victim, a resident of Gautam Budh Nagar district, alleged that she was abducted from Noida sector 29 on July 28 by a local Congress leader’s son, who took her to Meerut and raped her at a hotel, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) K Satyanarayan said.

After the incident, the woman went to lodge a complaint at the Sadar police station but police refused to take up the matter. Later, she went on to inform the DIG of Meerut, he said.

An 11-year-old tribal girl was electrocuted in a school hostel after which its superintendent was suspended for negligence in Kalimela area of Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Sunday.

Urmila Kabasi, a class four student of the school, suffered severe burns after she touched the wall in her hostel room on Saturday night as electricity was apparently passing through the structure, Inspector In-Charge of Kalimela police station SK Nayak said.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel on Sunday appealed to people to focus on building centralised kitchens to feed children instead of constructing temples.

“If we can provide quality food to children under mid-day meal scheme, we can drastically decrease the drop out ratio. I believe that it’s better to build kitchens to feed children than building temples,” Patel said, inaugurating a fully-automated kitchen, built by an NGO ‘The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF)’, at Bhadaj village on Sunday.

World must push Israel for Gaza ceasefire: Abbas

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday called upon the international community to pressure Israel to accept the Egyptian-proposed ceasefire in the Gaza Strip despite Israel’s refusal to participate in any truce efforts with the Hamas group.

Abbas urged the UN, the United States, the European Union, Russia and China to exert pressure on Israel and end its war on the Gaza Strip that killed and wounded thousands, Xinhua reported citing a statement published in the Palestine News Agency WAFA.

Woman gang-raped, thrown out of auto rickshaw in Kolkata

A 24-year-old mother of two was allegedly gang-raped and thrown out of a moving auto rickshaw in an unconscious state at Akra in South 24 Parganas district, a Kolkata suburb.

Additional Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas (West) Rabindranath Abharu said four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

However, the prime accused who was in a relationship with the woman is absconding, he said.

Three killed in Yemen clash

Three people, including two children, were killed in clashes between the army and armed tribals in Yemen Sunday, officials said.

A mortar shell hit a residence in central Yemen’s Marib province, killing a mother and her two children, in the clashes that erupted after the tribesmen prevented engineers from reaching the damaged section of an oil pipeline that was blown up last month, Xinhua reported citing provincial officials as saying.

The soldiers who were guarding the engineers clashed with the tribal fighters and then withdrew from the area.

UN ‘shocked’ as Israel bombs another school in Gaza

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees expressed “shock and disbelief” over the shelling of another UN school in Gaza on Sunday that killed at least 10 people.

The attack in the southern city of Rafah marked the third time in 10 days that a UN school has been hit, including the Israeli shelling four days ago of a school in Jabaliyah that killed 16 people.
