Uproar in Rajya Sabha over ‘derogatory’ article against Jaya

Rajya Sabha on Monday witnessed two adjournments during Question Hour as AIADMK members vociferously protested against a “derogatory” article against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sri Lankan government website.

AIADMK members trooped into the Well shouting slogans, which made Chairman Hamid Ansari to observe that their behaviour was unbecoming of Members of Parliament.

8-year-old girl beheaded in Poonch, father detained

In a shocking incident, an eight-year-old girl was on Sunday beheaded reportedly by her father as result of family feud in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

“A minor girl Masarat Naz was found murdered late this evening outside her house in a remote Gharana village of tehsil Mendhar in Poonch district,” Senior Superintendent of police Shamsher Hussain told a news agency tonight.

The beheaded body was seized, he said, adding, her father Zakir Hussain has been detained for the “suspected” involvement in the case.

35-year-old man shot dead in Muzaffarnagar

A 35-year-old man was allegedly murdered by unidentified men when he was going to his fields in the district, police said on Monday.

Vikul Kumar was on his way to his fields at Miranpur Khurd under Khatoli Police Station here yesterday when he was shot dead by unidentified persons, SHO Gajender Singh said.

The reason behind the murder is not known yet, he said, adding, the body has been sent for post-mortem.

The police has registered a case against unidentified persons and investigation into the case is on.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s repeatedly claim that ‘Gujarat Model of Development’ is best in the country, but a shocking story has emerged from the eastern part of the state.
More or less 125 kids from 16 tribal villages in Chhota Udepur district of Gujarat have to swim through a river to come to their school.

Girls and boys from Sajanpura village and others go swimming for thirty minutes to cross the 600 metre Hiran River and after that they walk for about five kilometers with the aim of attending the nearest school in their vicinity.

Rain likely in Delhi Monday

It will be a cloudy Monday here with the possibility of rainfall in some areas, said the Met Office.

“The sky will be generally cloudy. Light rainfall/thundershowers would occur in some areas during evening/night,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The day’s maximum temperature is likely to hover around 35 degrees Celsius.

Monday’s minimum temperature was a notch above the season’s average at 27.8 degrees Celsius.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 77 percent.

UN chief says Israeli attack on UN-run school a ‘criminal act’

UN chief Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned an Israeli attack on a UN-run school in the Gaza Strip that killed 10 Palestinians, terming it as a “moral outrage and a criminal act” and demanding that those responsible for the act should be held accountable.

“It is a moral outrage and a criminal act. United Nations shelters must be safe zones not combat zones,” a statement issued by Ban’s spokesman said here.

In Vadodara, Tons of Tomatoes Crushed in Fun

A certain section of people in Vadodara celebrated, on Sunday, ‘La Tomatina’ to mark Friendship Day. The people were, perhaps, unmindful of the fact that the price of the commodity has soared to Rs. 100 per kg.

The local ‘La Tomatina’ event (in which participants hurl tomatoes and get involved in the tomato fight) was organised at a private farm house, located on Sama-Savli Road on the outskirts of the city.

“The tomato hurling festival was organised for enjoyment of people from Surat, Vadodara and neighbouring Vallabhvidya Nagar,” said Abhishek, the organiser of the event.

Crude oil prices up in Asian trade

Oil prices rose in Asia today, but analysts said that the gains were capped following weakened demand caused by refinery shutdowns and easing concerns about armed conflicts around the world.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery rose five cents to $97.93, while Brent crude for September delivery gained 17 cents to $105.01 in late-morning trade.

Railways slap Rs one lakh fine on IRCTC for cockroach in food

The IRCTC has been fined Rs one lakh after a cockroach was found in food served in Kolkata Rajdhani, as Railways crack the whip slapping heavy fines totalling Rs 11.50 lakh on nine caterers including its subsidiary for serving “bad quality” food in trains.

“We had launched a special drive in the last month to detect quality of food being served in different trains. We found bad quality food in some trains and action was taken against caterers accordingly,” a senior Railway Ministry official said.

China unveils 12,000-km long range ICBM

China’s has unveiled the next generation of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which has a range of 12,000 kms, putting it among the world’s longest-range missiles.

A piece of information revealed in a government environmental monitoring file has indirectly confirmed the existence of a new generation of Chinese ICBM, the Dongfeng-41 (DF-41) missile, a report on the website of state-run Global Times said.

Telcos’ gross revenue up by 12% to Rs 60,716 cr in Q1

The gross revenue of telecom operators increased by about 12 percent to Rs 60,716 crore in the first quarter of this financial year, as per the latest report of regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The adjusted gross revenue on which government levies licence and other regulatory fees increased by 16.26 percent on yearly basis at Rs 41,016 crore during the reported quarter.

The gross revenue of telecom service providers was Rs 54,283.78 crore and adjusted gross revenue was Rs 35,279.5 crore in the first quarter of 2013.

Based on a survey by Travel + Leisure Magazine, Kyoto has replaced longtime winner Bangkok, which didn`t make it in this year`s top 10 list due to its recent political troubles, the CNN reported.

Despite repeat appearances in the number one spot, Thailand`s capital was voted out by the readers as the city was placed under curfew earlier this year during a military coup.

The vast mangrove forest in the Sunderbans is fast losing its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases, from the atmosphere due to rise in the salinity of water, rampant deforestation and pollution, a study has found.

The mangrove forest, marsh grass, phytoplanktons, molluscus and other coastal vegetation in the world’s largest delta are the natural absorbers of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to the study.

Six-year-old boy falls into 300-ft deep borewell in Karnataka

A six-year-old boy fell into an open borewell at nearby Sulikeri village on Sunday and all out efforts were underway to rescue him.

Tipanna Hatti slipped into the 300-feet borewell in his father’s sugarcane field while he had gone there to play with his 12-year-old cousin and is suspected to be stuck at a depth of 160 feet, senior district officials told reporters.

Researchers from University of Iowa developed a most detailed map to date of the abundance of thousands of proteins in the choroid, a region of the human eye long associated with blinding diseases. Rupee gains 29 paise at 60.89 against US dollar in early trade

The rupee recovered from over four-month low by strengthening 29 paise to 60.89 against the dollar in early trade on Monday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on increased selling of the US currency.

Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee but the dollar’s gain against other currencies overseas limited the rise.

The domestic currency had lost 63 paise to close at over four-month low of 61.18 against the dollar in Friday’s trade on weakness in global stock markets and a strong US currency overseas.

India’s Q1 gold jewellery imports rise by 10 pct: GJEPC

India’s gold jewellery imports surged 10 per cent to Rs 696.44 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal as high premium on the yellow metal following tough import norms forced traders to get finished jewellery from abroad, an industry body GJEPC said.

However, import of gold bars declined marginally by 3.32 per cent to Rs 8,261.88 crore in the April-June period of 2014-15, it said.

TVS Motor logs 32% sales growth in July

Two and three wheeler maker TVS Motor Company closed last month with a 32 percent sales growth, the company said Saturday.

The company in a statement said it sold 203,092 units last month, up from 153,676 units sold in July 2013.

Out of the total sales last month, the company exported 36,968 units from 26,145 units sold in July 2013.

According to TVS Motor, sales of two wheeler totalled 194,128 units last month as against 146,671 units sold during the comparable period last year.

The company sold 8,964 three wheelers in July this year up form 7,00 units sold in July 2013.
