Six soldiers killed in Yemen

At least six Yemeni soldiers were killed and three others wounded in a suspected Al Qaeda ambush Monday in Hadramout province, a police official said.

“Suspected Al Qaeda gunmen carried out an attack on Yemeni army patrol in the town of Qatan. Six soldiers were killed and three others were wounded,” the provincial police source said on condition of anonymity.

The militants fled after the attack, he said.

A military source confirmed the incident, saying that “the ambush occurred when the army troops were carrying out a sweeping operation on a military vehicle in the Qatan region”.

Over 14,000 calls received by Indian hotline in UAE

As many as 14,600 calls have been received in 2013 by a hotline for Indians in distress in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the most being work-related complaints, media reported.

The 24-hour helpline 800-INDIA (80046342) run by the Indian Workers Resource Centre (IWRC) in Dubai offers free legal, psychological and financial counselling for Indians in the UAE, Gulf News reported Sunday.

The IWRC was established by the Indian government to handle issues pertaining to Indian workers residing in the UAE in 2010.

Pocharam blames opposition for police lathicharge on farmers

Telangana Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas blamed the opposition parties for the lathicharge on protesting farmers at Narsingi of Medak district on Monday.

Speaking to media persons at the Secretariat, Pocharam accused the police of over-action and alleged that some police personnel resorted to lathi-charge at the behest of some leaders of opposition parties. He further alleged that innocent farmers were falling to the politics being played by opposition parties. Strongly condemning the lathi-charge, he asked the police to observe restrain as everyone has a right to hold protest.

Russia to hold military drill near Ukraine

Russia is all set to conduct military exercises this week near the Ukrainian border, BBC reported Monday.

The Russian defence ministry announced that the military exercises will involve 100 aircraft in the west of the country near the Ukraine border.

Fighter jets, helicopters and the latest bombers would take part in the operation, a spokesperson said.

The Russian official, however, did not mention Ukraine in his announcement.

Complete EAMCET counselling by Aug 31: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Governments to complete the EAMCET counselling by August 31.

The Supreme Court also asked the two States to begin the classes from September first week. It also remarked that students should not suffer due to the bifurcation of State and their future should not fall prey to the politics. The court posted the next hearing on the case to August 11.

Researchers said that red meat and resistant starch have opposite effects on the colorectal cancer -promoting miRNAs, the miR-17-92 cluster and the findings supports consumption of resistant starch as a means of reducing the risk associated with a high red meat diet.

The Union Home Ministry has sought additional information from CBI in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter killing case to take a call on the agency’s plea for sanction to prosecute four IB officials, including its former Special Director Rajinder Kumar, in the case.

CBI has provided the Home Ministry copies of the case record with information related to the fake encounter in which 19-year-old college student Ishrat Jahan was killed 10 years ago in Gujarat that had created a major controversy.

Chief Justice of India R M Lodha today took strong exception to a plea that he should recuse himself from hearing an inter-state dispute involving Rajasthan as he hailed from the state.

“I am born in India and I am an Indian first more than Rajasthani,” Justice Lodha said when senior advocate Harish Salve wondered whether the CJI would recuse from the case.

“I am sorry to hear this particularly if it is coming from a senior advocate and a person of such a vast experience,” the CJI said when the matter relating to water dispute among northern states was mentioned before the bench.

Islamic State militants execute seven of a family in Syria

At least seven members of a family, including two children, were executed by militants of the radical Islamic State (IS) in central Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The extremists broke into the family home in the village of Al-Mazira, located in the central province of Hama, late Sunday and shot some of the victims and stabbed others.

The family belongs to the Ismaili sect, part of the Shia branch of Islam.

Two bodies recovered after Bangladesh ferry capsizes

Two bodies have been recovered hours after an overloaded ferry, carrying hundreds of passengers, sank Monday morning in the Padma river in Bangladesh.

“Bodies of two women have been recovered so far,” said Tofazzal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Lauhajang Police Station in Munshiganj district, some 27 km away from capital Dhaka.

Hossain said the Pinak-6 ferry, carrying some 200-300 passengers, capsized in the river at around 11.15 a.m., Xinhua reported

He said a rescue vessel has been called in to boost local efforts to salvage the ferry.

India, Nepal to review 1950 friendship treaty

India and Nepal Monday agreed to “review, adjust and update” a 1950 bilateral friendship treaty which sections of Nepalese people feel is loaded against their country.

A joint statement issued at the end of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Nepal said it also had been agreed to review “other bilateral agreements”.

Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala welcomed the decision. The agreement said Kathmandu will provide at the earliest proposals to revise the 1950 treaty.

Power plants have less than 4 days’ coal stock: Goyal

Giving an indication of the fuel shortage in the country, Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal Monday said 22 coal-based power plants monitored by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) had stocks to last less than four days as of last week.

“As on 29th July, out of the coal-based power stations monitored on daily basis by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), 22 power plants are having coal stock less than four days,” Goyal informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

The minister cited deficient monsoons as a major reason for low coal stocks at power plants.

A ‘flypad’ touchscreen technology similar to what is seen in i-pads has provided crucial insights into how our brain decides what and how much to eat.

The findings revealed surprising similarities between the way mammals and flies eat.

“What and how we eat is a crucial determinant of health and wellbeing. In lab experiments, we found that each time the fly touched the food, we were able to detect it, allowing us to follow the details of feeding in high resolution and real time,” said Carlos Ribeiro from the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme in Portugal.

The Supreme Court today came to the rescue of a 19-year-old girl, who married against the wishes of her family, by ordering her release from Nari Niketan with a specific direction that she was at liberty to choose her way.

“She is set on liberty. Take her out from the exit gate (of the courtroom). Policemen have nothing to do. She can go anywhere,” a bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha said.

The 49-year-old produced and directed “Vasanthathinte Kanalvazhikalil”. Set in the 1940s, it highlights the role played by Pillai, founder of the Communist movement in the state besides party legends like A.K. Gopalan, E.M.S. Namboodripad and other leading lights and in fighting castism and feudalism.
