40 Yazidi children reported dead after Iraq attack: UN

Forty children from northern Iraq’s Yazidi minority are reported to have died as a result of a jihadist attack on the Sinjar region, the United Nations Children’s Fund said today.

“According to official reports received by UNICEF, these children from the Yazidi minority died as a direct consequence of violence, displacement and dehydration over the past two days,” a statement said.

On Sunday, fighters from the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group that controls much of northwestern Iraq took over Sinjar, which had been under the control of Kurdish troops.

Seven children injured as school bus overturns

At least seven students were injured when the school bus there were travelling in turned turtle in Nellore district on Tuesday.

According to information reaching here, the accident occurred on Lingasamudram Road in Saidapuram mandal of Nellore district while the bus was going from Vemulachedu to Gudur. The bus driver lost control after trying to avoid hitting a tractor coming from the opposite direction. The bus cleaner also got injured in the accident. The injured children were immediately rushed to Gudur Hospital through 108 Ambulance. (INN)

Jobless son kills mother for cash

In a gruesome incident, a 60-year-old woman was brutally murdered by her own son.

The incident took place in Vidhyuth Nagar of Weaker Sections Colony in Sanathnagar police limits on Monday morning. According to police, the deceased, Laxmi’s son Shiva intercepted her near the railway track close to their residence and asked her to handover Rs 60,000 cash which she was carrying to some place. On refusal, he allegedly beat her up and smashed her head with a boulder leading to her instantaneous death. He later fled from the scene by snatching away the cash.

Mysterious woman steals gold chain from school girl

An unidentified woman snatched away gold ear-rings from a school girl in Vanasthalipuram police limits.

According to police, they received a complaint from one Srinivas of Harihara Colony stating that his children – Durga Bhavani (8) and Arvind (7) went missing from the Zilla Parishad School. Srinivas dropped both the kids in front of school gate on Monday morning. However, before they could enter the school, they were allegedly taken away by one unidentified woman.

Naqvi expresses displeasure over UP law and order situation

BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today expressed his displeasure over the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh by claiming that the state government had been kidnapped by criminals.

BCCI invites bids for title sponsorship

With another season of hectic cricket in progress, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today invited title sponsorship bids for its international and domestic matches.

“The Marketing Committee of the BCCI met at Mumbai to finalize the ITT (Invitation to Tender) for title sponsorship rights for BCCI international and domestic matches for the period between September 2014 and April next year,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement.

In this period, India will be playing three Tests, five one-dayers and one Twenty20 with West Indies.

US hopes Kerry’s visit will ‘melt the ice’ in ties with India

The Obama administration hopes that Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent visit to India will “melt the ice” in the ties and start an important relationship with the new Indian government that has great “strategic value” to America, a top US official has said.

Kerry visited New Delhi last week to co-chair the fifth annual India-US Strategic Dialogue with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

He was the first cabinet minister from the Obama administration to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

First Solar Inc to set up 45-MW solar power plant in Telangana

Solar power projects developer First Solar Inc (FSLR) today said it plans to build 45 megawatt (MW) capacity of solar power generation in Telangana.

The power generated will supply electricity through the grid to the Southern Power Distribution Company of
Telangana State Limited, at a levelised tariff of Rs 6.49/kwh for a period of 20 years, FSLR said in a statement.

The project will include construction at two different sites in the Mahabubnagar district, and is expected to be in
commercial operation by May 2015, it said.

Boys’ death at Asaram ashram: Court rejects plea for CBI probe

A local court today rejected a plea seeking CBI probe in the 2008 death case of two cousins staying at self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s city-based ashram.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M V Gohel rejected the plea filed by the parents of the deceased on the ground that
the probe agency – state CID – has already filed the charge sheet after investigating the case.

Cousins Dipesh Vaghela (10) and Abhishek Vaghela (11) went missing from Asaram’s gurukul, a residential school
situated in Motera ashram of the city, on July 3, 2008 under mysterious circumstances.

Naroda Patiya riots convict Bajrangi gets temporary bail

The Gujarat High Court today granted temporary bail to Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Babu Bajrangi, convicted in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case.

A division bench of justices A S Dave and Sonia Gokani granted temporary release from jail to Bajrangi for treatment of an eye disease, from August 9 to 16.

In his plea before the HC seeking temporary bail, Bajrangi, presently lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail, said
that there is 50 per cent blockade in his eye veins and he needs to be out on bail for the treatment.

Seven youths rape minor girl in Mizoram, arrested

Mizoram police arrested seven youths, including four minors, for gang raping a minor girl, police said in Aizwal on Tuesday.

“The accused youths gang raped a 14-year-old girl at Leite village (in Lunglei district) in southern Mizoram Sunday night,” a police official said.

He said the victim had eloped with her lover, who was accompanied by his seven friends.

“When the girl’s friend returned home to get his wallet which he had forgotten while leaving his house in a hurry, his friends gang raped the girl,” the official added.
