Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who was absent yesterday at the launch function of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna, today said Narendra Modi government is trying to draw publicity by renaming an old scheme.

“Its like old wine in new bottle,” Manjhi told reporters on “Jan Dhan” yojna launched in the country yesterday, which he could not attend here.

“They are trying to draw publicity by renaming an old scheme which was there during Congress as well as our time,” he said emerging from a review meeting on law and order in the state.

Sex racket busted, two held, victim rescued in Delhi

Police today busted a sex racket and rescued a young girl after arresting two persons from a house in MVP Colony area in Delhi.

“The racket was being run online. The main accused, identified only as Vijay, who hails from Hyderabad, has created a website and posted a mobile number for call girl service,” said police inspector G.V Ramana.

On a tip-off, police kept the website under surveillance and raided the house in the evening.

External debt up at $440 bn pumped by NRI deposits

Notwithstanding the increase in India’s external debt stock during 2013-14 to over $440 billion, crucial debt indicators such as external debt-GDP ratio and debt service ratio remained in the comfort zone

In its annual publication titled ‘India’s external debt: A status report 2013-14’ released here Friday, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) said the rise in external debt was due to long-term debt, particularly NRI deposits.

New tool maps how drug abuse affects brain

In a first, researchers have developed a laser-based imaging tool to map how drug abuse disrupts blood flow to the brain.

The new technology may aid in improving brain-cancer surgery and tissue engineering, and lead to better treatment options for recovering drug addicts.

Researchers demonstrated their technique by using a laser-based method of measuring how cocaine disrupts blood flow in the brains of mice.

Nasal cells can repair knee defects

In a breakthrough, researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland have found that cells taken from the nasal septum are able to adapt to the environment of the knee joint and can repair articular cartilage defects.

Cartilage lesions in joints often appear in older people as a result of degenerative processes.

“The findings have opened up the possibility to investigate an innovative clinical treatment of cartilage damage,” said Ivan Martin, a professor for tissue engineering.

US jeweller sues Sean Kingston

A jeweller has filed a law suit against singer Sean Kingston for non-payment for jewelleries and other items.

Avi Da calims that he sold the R&B star watches, chains, bracelets and necklaces between 2008 and 2013 – and he’s still waiting to be paid. He also claimed that the cheques the singer issued at seven different times over the years, they all bounced, reports tmz.com.

According the the lawsuit, filed here, he claims Kingston owes him more than $200,000 (British pounds 118,000), and still hasn’t returned a $12,000 ring he loaned the star for a TV appearance.

Dry fruits milkshake

Ingredients:
1 cup – cashews
1/2 cup – Badam
1 cup – Pistachio
1 cup – powdered Sugar
1/2 liter – Milk
1 tbsp – condensed milk

For garnishing: 1 tsp – raisins, tutti fruitti, Cucumber seeds

METHOD

Soak the cashews, badam and pistachios for 1 hour. Blend them to a fine paste in a mixer.
Heat the milk and when it comes to the boiling point add the blended mixture, milkmaid, and powdered sugar.
Stir well for 10 minutes.
Allow it cool in a refrigerator for half an hour.
When serving, garnish with raisins, tutti fruity and cucumber seeds.

Ukraine wants to seek NATO membership: PM

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said today that the government is seeking to join NATO and is submitting a relevant bill to parliament to end the country’s official ‘non-bloc’ policy.

“The government is entering a bill to Verkhovna Rada (parliament) about the cancellation of Ukraine’s non-bloc status and resumption of Ukraine’s course for NATO membership.

The bill, if passed, would forbid Ukraine from taking a decision on membership in “any other economic, political, or other unions” that would prevent the country from eventually joining the European Union, he said.

Bihar flood-hit up the ante over relief drought

Flood victims in Bihar’s Nalanda district Friday blocked roads for hours to protest inadequate assistance provided to them by the state government, police said.

Angry over lack of relief, the flood-hit people in Bihar Sharif, the district headquarters of Nalanda, staged a protest demanding adequate relief and compensation.

“The flood victims blocked the roads for hours, thereby disrupting normal life,” a police official said.

Nalanda is one of the 15 flood-affected districts in the state.

CBI files charge sheet against Dayanidhi Maran

The CBI here Friday filed a charge sheet against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran and others in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.

The charge sheet was filed before special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge O.P. Saini, who will hear the matter Sep 11.

The CBI has named five individuals. As one among them has died, charges against him abated.

The CBI has booked them under charges of criminal conspiracy and various provision of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Four companies has also been named in the charge sheet.

Injured Rohit Sharma replaced by Vijay for ODIs, T20

Indian batsman Rohit Sharma Friday was ruled out of the ongoing five-match One-Day International (ODI) series and the one-off Twenty20 International against England after sustaining a fracture in the middle finger of his right hand.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee of the Indian cricket board has picked Murali Vijay as his replacement.

Vijay, who was impressive in the Test series, will join the squad in England at the earliest.

India take on England in the third ODI here Saturday.

Woman taken away by crocodile in Odisha

A 38-year-old woman was attacked and dragged into water by a crocodile in Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

An adult crocodile attacked Baula Pradhan, a fisher woman near Ajagarapatia creek yesterday, Divisional Forest Officer, Rajnagar Mangrove (wildlife) forest division, Kedar Kumar Swain said.

The victim was yet to be traced.

Forest personnel went to the area after villagers agitated over, “Such incidents are frequently taking place on humans.” The incident occurred within the national park limits.

Bangladeshis among five arrested in Mizoram

Five tribals, including two Bangladeshis, have been arrested in Mizoram and a huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered from them, a Border Security Force (BSF) officer said here Friday.

“BSF troopers along with Mizoram police, during a routine search operation of a vehicle on the Aizawl airport road Thursday, arrested the five Chakma tribal men,” BSF spokesman Bhaskar Rawat told IANS.

Five sophisticated rifles, 5,100 round of live cartridges and 10 mobile phone sets were recovered from their possession, the BSF spokesman said.

Shakira confirms second pregnancy

Singer Shakira has put rest to speculations about her second pregnancy, confirming that she’s expecting her baby number two with her partner and soccer player Gerard Pique.

The 37-year-old singer made the revelation to a magazine, suggest reports.

“Pues sí, la verdad es que sí, estoy embarazada,” she said in her native tongue.

It translates to “Yes, the truth is that yes, I am pregnant.”

The revelation comes after weeks of pregnancy speculation.

In April, Shakira said she was too busy with her work commitments to have another baby.

NATO holds emergency meeting over Ukraine crisis

Ambassadors of the 28 NATO members Friday met in an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss the crisis in eastern Ukraine, as the West stepped up its accusations of direct Russian involvement in the conflict.

On Thursday, NATO released satellite images it said showed Russian forces inside Ukraine, and said more than 1,000 troops were operating there, BBC reported.

Russia has denied all accusations of sending troops to conflict-hit eastern Ukraine.

Heavy fighting was continuing Friday near the strategic port of Mariupol, on the Azov Sea.

Trainee IPS officer drowns at police academy in Hyderabad

A trainee police officer drowned in a swimming pool at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA) here late Thursday night, sources said.

Manu Mukt Manav, a trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to Haryana, drowned in the swimming pool during a party of trainee officers in the academy campus at Shivrampally.

According to academy sources, the trainee officer was shifted to a private hospital in Banjara Hills, where he was declared dead.

New method to diagnose malaria accurately

Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, claim to have developed a new innovative system for accurately diagnosing malaria infection.

The method is based on computer vision algorithms similar to those used in facial recognition systems combined with visualisation of only the diagnostically most relevant areas.

A thin layer of blood smeared on a microscope slide is first digitised. The algorithm analyses more than 50,000 red blood cells per sample and ranks them according to the probability of infection.

No exaggeration in referring to an Indian as a ‘Hindu’ abroad: Kalraj Mishra

Union Minister Kalraj Mishra today said there is no exaggeration if a person living in “Hindustan” is referred to as a “Hindu” abroad.

“There is no exaggeration if a person living in Hindustan is referred to as a Hindu abroad…A person going out is called a Hindu Muslim or Hindu Christian meaning a person living in Hindustan,” Mishra told PTI.

Elaborating on this, Mishra cited the High Courts and Supreme Court, which in their judgements, “have mentioned about the 2000-year-old ancient quotes and said that Hinduism is a way of life…A philosophy.”

India’s star shuttler Saina Nehwal crashed out of the World Badminton Championships after suffering a straight game defeat at the hands of top seed Li Xuerui of China, here today.

The seventh-seeded Saina was no match for World No.1 Xuerui, who took just 45 minutes to sent packing the Indian with identical 15-21 15-21 scoreline.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, researchers said. In order to overcome this addiction, many people resort to nicotine replacement therapies.

A recent literature review by researchers at the University of Miami (UM) suggest that small dosages of nicotine found in cigarette substitutes could be harmful to human musculoskeletal system, due to overuse.

Israel identifies body as missing American student

Israeli police say a recently found body has been identified after a forensic investigation as that of a US religious student who disappeared while hiking in Jerusalem last week.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says the body was confirmed early today morning to be that of seminary student Aharon Sofer. She says “there is no suspicion of foul play,” meaning Sofer’s death was not a militant attack or a criminal attack.

Samri had no further details on how Sofer died.
