Suspected thief beaten to death by villagers in Gujarat

A 55-year-old man, suspected to be a thief, was beaten to death in Sarol village, police said today.

“A person, who was suspected to be a thief, was beaten to death by villagers in Sarol village in Anand,” Sub-Inspector J B Gadhvi of Bhadran Police Station said.

The police has filed an FIR and booked 15 villagers in this connection.

The deceased, identified as Babu Talpada, was caught last night with his 22-year-old son Lalu from a house owned by one Lakshman Jadhav in Sarol village, Gadhvi said.

Order on e-rickshaws Sep 9, says Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court Friday said it will Sep 9 pass an order on whether to lift a ban on plying of e-rickshaws in the capital till the law is amended to bring them under the ambit of the Motor Vehicles Act.

A division bench of Justice B.D Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul also observed that it seems central government is not keen on lifting of the ban on e-rickshaws.

Terror-free environment needed for dialogue with Pakistan: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday said he was “disappointed” that Pakistan sought to make a “spectacle” of efforts at talks and added that any “meaningful” bilateral dialogue requires an environment that is free from “terrorism” and “violence”.

“India desires peaceful, friendly and cooperative ties with Pakistan. I had a very good meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in May 2014, when he attended the swearing-in ceremony of my government,” Modi said at an interaction with Japanese media ahead of his visit to the country.

Coal block scam: CBI drops case against Kumar Mangalam Birla, Parekh

The CBI has filed a closure report in the coal block allocation scam case against industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, former coal secretary P.C. Parekh and others in a court here, sources said Friday.

Besides Birla and Parekh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had named other unknown people as an accused in a first information report lodged in October 2013.

The agency Thursday filed its closure report in the court of Special Judge Bharat Parashar, who will hear the matter Sep 1.

Jan Dhan: 18.4 mn accounts opened; bank camps on all Saturdays

Over 18.4 million bank accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan scheme and banks will organise camps from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all Saturdays to reach out to unbanked households, the government said Friday.

“It has been decided that henceforth, the banks will be holding such camps on weekly basis, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all Saturdays so that the target of covering unbanked households is achieved well in time,” a finance ministry statement said.

Delhi HC reserves judgment on E-rickshaw issue

The Delhi High Court today reserved its judgment on the E-rickshaw issue, with the next hearing scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

“I represent the E-Rickshaw Welfare Association. All the parties have submitted their statements before the court. This is a question of livelihood. Thirteen centers will be opened for issuing licenses to e-rickshaws and they are not allowed to carry more than four passengers. For now, the court has reserved its judgment; the next hearing will be on Tuesday,” said Delhi High Court ( HC) lawyer RK Kapoor.

India seeks Kuwait’s help over arrested Indians

India has sought Kuwait’s assistance over the arrest of some Indian nationals following a brawl in that Gulf nation.

“I understand that there was a brawl with nationals of some other countries and that led to a situation where some of the Indian nationals were arrested,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesman of the external affairs ministry, told media here Friday.

“We have immediately taken action. Our mission in Kuwait has written to the Kuwaiti foreign ministry and sought their assistance in the matter,” he said.

Bangalore rider dies in race track accident

A rider from Bangalore, Syed Irfan, succumbed to injuries late Thursday night after a head-on crash with the safety amco barrier during a practice session ahead of the JK Tyre-FMSCI National Drag Racing Championship at the Kari Motor Speedway here.

The incident occurred when Irfan, who had taken part in similar events in the past, reportedly did not slow down the Yamaha 135 racing bike he was riding at the end of the straight and ploughed into the safety barrier.

Sivaramakrishnan panel submits report on new capital to HM

The Sivaramakrishnan Committee submitted its final report to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the new capital of residuary State of Andhra Pradesh here on Friday.

The report is likely to be uploaded on government website for public opinion. According to sources, the Committee has did not pin-point one place and suggested at least half-a-dozen options. It has also been indicated that the panel has recommended that the final decision on the location of new capital be assigned to the State Government.

Haryana Roadways driver booked for fake licence

A man has been booked for getting a driver’s job with the Haryana Roadways on a fake driving licence, police said here Friday.

Rakesh Kumar, 30, was booked under sections of cheating, preparing and using fake documents and hatching a criminal conspiracy.

Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Rohtak district in the state, managed to get the job on a fake driving licence issued from a Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Nagaland.

He joined Haryana Roadways July 3.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Friday said accusations against Russia of invading Ukraine have been voiced repeatedly but the US and European countries have failed to substantiate such accusations with facts.

“It is not the first time when accusations addressed to us are heard. Since the beginning of the crisis, we have been accused, that we are to blame for everything… No facts have been presented to us either about invasion or other issues,” Lavrov said after a bilateral meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif here.

In signs of revival, Indian economy expands 5.7 percent

Beating expectations and showing another sign of revival, the Indian economy expanded by 5.7 percent during the first quarter of the current financial year to log the highest growth yet in nine quarters or over two years, official data showed Friday.

The gross domestic product (GDP), which is the aggregate market value of all the goods and services produced in the country, had expanded by just 4.6 percent in the previous quarter, that is January-March, and by 4.7 percent in the like quarter of last fiscal.

Haryana power utilities Friday protested a unilateral move by private sector power company Adani Power to cut its 1,424 MW electricity supply to the state.

“Despite making all payments timely in lieu of power given/sold to Haryana, Adani Power has stopped giving/supplying power to Haryana with effect from Aug 27. There is an agreement between Haryana Power Utilities and Adani Power for 1,424 MW power round-the-clock for 25 years,” a state government spokesman said here Friday.
