Modi government selling off Indian assets: Mamata

Accusing the Narendra Modi led BJP government of selling out the country’s assets by embracing FDI across sectors, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday warned that such policies would put Indian economy in grave crisis.

“You can never make me do anything which is anti-people. I left the United Progressive Alliance as I was opposed to FDI in retail. I cannot put the livelihood of 50 crore Indians in danger,” Banerjee said.

Stating that the only option which the Modi government believed in is to sell of the country’s assets and raise fares.

850,000 displaced in one month in Iraq

The Islamic State minlitants advancements have forcibly displaced 850,000 people in one month, the International Organisation for Migration(IOM) said Friday.

The total number of people who have been evacuated their homes since January have increased to 1.6 million.

Most of those who have fled have found refuge in the autonomous Iraqi region of Kurdistan, the IOM, a non-governmental organisation, said.

UN peacekeepers injured in Mali landmine explosion

A number of UN peacekeepers were injured Friday when their vehicle hit a landmine in northern Mali, a UN spokesman said.

“The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) reported that around 12 noon, the mission’s military vehicle hit a landmine in Aguelhok of Kidal region,” Xinhua quoted UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric as saying at a daily briefing.

“A number of peacekeepers have been wounded and of which three are seriously injured,” Dujarric said, without giving the exact number of the injured.

“An evacuation is being arranged,” he said.

Over three million flee Syria since 2011: UN

The number of Syrians forced to flee their country as a result of the civil war that began in 2011 topped three million Friday, UN refugee agency said.

Journey out of Syria is becoming tougher as many people are forced to hefty sums ($100 per head or more) at armed checkpoints proliferating along the borders, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement.

Nearly half the Syrian population have been driven out of their homes, including around 6.5 million internally displaced people, the statement said.

Modi leaves for Japan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Japan Saturday morning on his first bilateral visit outside the Indian subcontinent.

Modi and his entourage will touch down at Kyoto airport where Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will receive the Indian head of government.

Abe will be hosting a dinner for his Indian counterpart later Saturday.

This is Modi’s third official bilateral visit after becoming prime minister in May this year. He made bilateral visits to South Asian neighbours Bhutan and Nepal after becoming prime minister.

Accusing the CBI of carrying out propaganda against her Trinamool Congress in its Saradha chit fund scam probe ahead of the bypolls to two assembly seats, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday warned the agency of a “dangerous situation” if it tried to protect the “real culprits”.

Coming down heavily on the Central Bureau of Investigation, which has been closing in on the Saradha money trail, Banerjee, also the Trinamool supremo, claimed that central agencies had tried the same “conspiracy” ahead of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year and the 2008 panchayat polls.

BSF, Pakistan Rangers hold flag meeting

A sector commander level flag meeting was held Friday between Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers on the international border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Jammu district, officials said.

BSF sources told IANS here that Deputy Inspector General (Jammu range) B.S. Kasana and the Rangers’ Sialkot sector commander, Brig. Mateen, represented their countries in the meeting, which was one of the longest, lasting four hours from 4.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., at Octroi border outpost in Suchetgarh area of R.S. Pura sector.

SC notice on plea to screen travellers from Ebola-affected areas

The Supreme Court Friday issued notice to the central government on a PIL seeking direction that passengers coming on international flights from Ebola-affected countries in African be screened to ensure that they are free of deadly virus.

A bench of Chief Justice R.M.Lodha, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman was urged for direction that the government should take immediate steps for the screening of passengers on the flights from affected countries and to take adequate steps to prevent and cure the deadly epidemic.

Delhi policeman critical after suicide attempt

A Delhi Police constable is in a critical condition in a Delhi hospital after jumping off a flyover in a bid to commit suicide, police said Friday.

Anil, posted in east Delhi’s Khajuri Khas police station, jumped off the Yamuna Bazar flyover near Kashmere Gate in north Delhi Wednesday evening.

Eyewitnesses told the police he was in an auto-rickshaw with two friends, including a woman, just prior to the incident.

The HRD ministry has sent a letter to the Delhi University registrar asking for a para-wise reply to the allegations of irregularities and anomalies against the VC levelled by Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

Police Friday summoned the son of Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda for questioning in a case of rape and cheating Kannada actress Maithreyi has filed against him.

“We have sent notice to Karthik’s house in the city, asking him to appear before our investigation team soon in connection with the case booked against him under section 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” a police official told IANS here.
