JNU students union election to be held Sep 12

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) election will be held Sep 12, a member of an election body said Saturday.

The candidates will have to fill their nomination papers by Tuesday and the poll campaign will start from Wednesday, one of the members of the election body told IANS here.

The presidential debate will be held Sep 10.

The JNUSU election coincides with the Delhi University Students Union polls.

ISL’s Mumbai franchise unveil name, squad, logo

Indian Super League’s (ISL) Mumbai franchise owners Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh said that their team will be called Mumbai City Football Club while announcing player names and launching the team logo and outlining its philosophy here Saturday.

Present at the launch were several Mumbai City FC players such as Subrata Paul, Ishan Debnath, Manuel Friedrich, Peter Costa, Syed Rahim Nabi, Asif Kottayil, Lalrin Fela, Rohit Mirza, Abhishek Yadav, Sushil Kumar Singh, Singam Subash Singh and Nadong Bhutia along with technical director Nishant Mehra and COO Arunava Chaudhuri.

Can’t hold posts in religious groups, Kerala employees told

Kerala Saturday came out with a new order that prevents a government employee from becoming an office bearer of any communal or religious organisation.

The government said it was forced to issue this order after several complaints surfaced about government servants being office bearers of communal or religious organisations.

It said there were reports about government employees accepting subscription or taking part in activities that involved collection of money from people, public or private entities.

The new order amends the Kerala Government Servants Conduct Rules, 1960.

India, Japan ink Kyoto-Varanasi partnership agreement

India and Japan Saturday signed the Kyoto-Varanasi partnership agreement, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly received by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe here.

Abe and Modi hugged each other, and then fed fish in keeping with the Japanese tradition.

“Feeding the fish. PM @narendramodi & PM @AbeShinzo began engagement in Kyoto following tradition of feeding the fish,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted along with a photo of Modi and Abe.

State games in Assam from next year: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Saturday announced that state games would be held regularly from next year.

The chief minister made the announcement at a meeting with representatives of Assam Olympic Association (AOA)-affiliated state and district sports associations, a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said.

“The state games must be held after every two years in every district headquarter. It will go a long way in unearthing latent talent,” he said, adding the games will be organised in Silchar in February next year.

Man held with 1.8 kg gold at IGI airport

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Saturday arrested a passenger for illegally carrying 1.8 kg of gold at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here, an official said.

Nadim Ali, in his 40s and a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested after the gold was recovered from him Saturday morning, the official said.

Talks Sep 5 for Vizhinjam Port’s central funding

Official talks will be held in Delhi Sep 5 to finalise conditions for central assistance to the proposed Vizhinjam Port project, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Saturday.

Chandy, Minister for Ports K. Babu and senior officials held talks with union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Delhi Saturday about the central government’s clearance for the viability gap funding for the Rs.5,000-crore expected first phase cost of the project.

“The talks went off well. Some conditions have to be finalised and for this a high-level official meeting will be held in Delhi Sep 5,” Chandy said.

‘Rock On!!’ team nostalgic after six years

The team of “Rock On!!” turned nostalgic as the hit Bollywood film clocked six years since its release.

The movie released Aug 29, 2008.

Its writer-director Abhishek Kapoor tweeted Friday: “HBD #rockon!! 6 yrs ago, u made a diff and changed lives.. @rampalarjun @FarOutAkhtar @Purab_Kohli and a shout out 2 all who made it happen.”

The film, a rock musical, launched the acting careers of Prachi Desai and Farhan Akhtar. Farhan even produced the film, which also stars Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny and Purab Kohli.

Comedienne Joan Rivers, who was reportedly placed in a medically-induced coma, remains in a “serious” condition at a hospital here, says her daughter Melissa Rivers.

The “Fashion Police” host is “receiving the best treatment and care possible”.

Joan, 81, was placed in a medically-induced coma after she suffered a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing during a minor throat surgery Thursday.

Essar Capital sells telecom business in Kenya for $120 million

Essar Capital Saturday announced the signing of binding agreements with Safaricom and Airtel for the sale of its telecom business in Kenya for $120 million.

The firm, through its portfolio company Essar Telecom Kenya Limited (ETKL), operates the popular yuMobile telecom service in Kenya.

According to the company, the sale transaction has received approval from the communication authority (CA) in Kenya and that the divestment will see Safaricom take over ETKL’s network, IT (information technology)and office infrastructure while Airtel will acquire the company’s subscribers.

Modi in Japan: Kyoto-Varanasi partnership pact inked

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a five-day visit to Japan Saturday, a day that saw the inking of a partnership agreement between Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and Kyoto, which was the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years.

The partnership agreement was signed soon after Modi was received warmly by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

Courts seeks ATR on hate speeches by Bhagwat, Togadia, Khan

Delhi Police was today asked by a court here to file a report on September 24 on a plea seeking lodging of an FIR against RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, VHP leader Praveen Togadia and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for allegedly making “hate speeches”.

Metropolitan Magistrate Puneet Pahwa directed the station house officer (SHO) of Tilak Marg police station here to file an Action Taken Report (ATR) in this regard.

“Let ATR be called from SHO concerned for September 24,” the court said.

Japan, India may launch security consultative framework

Japan and India are likely to agree to launch a security consultative framework involving the two countries’ foreign and defence ministers, a senior Japanese foreign ministry official has said.

Calling Japan and India “two major maritime democracies in Asia,” Japanese officials said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to affirm cooperation in ensuring a “peaceful and stable maritime order” in an apparent effort to curb Beijing’s rising activity in the East and South China seas and the Indian Ocean, Kyodo news agency reported Saturday.

‘Love-Jihad being used to create disharmony’

Muslim scholars in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh have urged activists and media organisations not to misuse the concept of ‘Love-Jihad’ to create misunderstandings among people.

Men and women from both the Hindu and Muslim communities have been marrying one another after falling in love for a long time, said Jasim Mohammed, member of the Forum of Muslim Studies and Analysis (FMSA).

“After the BJP came to power, inter-religious marriages have come under the scanner and efforts are being made to polarise society to fan communal fires,” Jasim Mohammed said.

New bridge in Bihar collapses ahead of inauguration

A newly built bridge collapsed ahead of its inauguration in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, officials said Saturday.

The Basghatta bridge was built by the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation over the Bagmati river in Muzaffarpur at a cost of Rs. 25 crore.

The bridge was expected to be inaugurated next month.

State road construction minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh said action will be taken against those found guilty.

“We have ordered an inquiry by a top official into it and will take action after submission of the report,” Singh told mediapersons here.

Families of ‘disappeared persons’ stage protest in Srinagar

Dozens of families of ‘disappeared persons’ in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday staged a peaceful protest here to commemorate the international day of disappeared persons.

Carrying banners and staging a street theatre to highlight their plight, family members of the ‘disappeared persons’ held the protest in a park here.

Separatist leader and chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Muhammad Yasin Malik also joined them.

The police did not intervene as the protesters remained peaceful and left after staging the protest.

Ukrainian cargo plane crashes in Algeria

A Ukrainian cargo plane crashed Saturday in Algeria’s Tamenrasset province.

According to rescue officials, the crash occurred at 1.40 p.m and no survivors were found, Xinhua reported.

The Antonov-12 type jet which carried seven passengers including crew members crashed in a mountainous area 15 km off Tamenrasset airport, a transport ministry statement said.

The statement said that contact with the plane was lost three minutes after it took off from the Tamenrasset airport.

The plane belongs to Ukraine Alliance, the statement added.

Seized ISIS laptop reveals terror group’s bio weapons attack plan

A laptop seized from an ISIS fighter has revealed the terror group’s secret plan of developing and using bio weapons against non-Muslims.

According to FOX News, a commander of a moderate Syrian rebel group in northern Syria, identified as Abu Ali by ForeignPolicy.com told the publication the black laptop, belonging to a Tunisian jihadist, was seized earlier this year in a raid on an ISIS hideout in the Syrian province of Idlib, close to the border with Turkey.

Ali told ForeignPolicy.com that the laptop and the power cord were found in a room, and was taken by him.

An international organisation involved in assessing post-conflict reconstruction says it will take 20 years for Gaza’s battered and neglected housing stock to be rebuilt following the war between Hamas and Israel.

The assessment by Shelter Cluster, co-chaired by the UN refugee agency and the Red Cross, underscores the complexities involved in an overall reconstruction programme for the Gaza Strip, which some Palestinian officials have estimated could cost in excess of USD 6 billion.

Angelina Jolie condemns civil war in Syria

Actress Angelina Jolie, who is special envoy for United Nations High Commission for Refugees, said the reputation and credibility of the international system is at stake because of the ongoing civil war in Syria.

Three million people have fled Syria because of the conflict, which began in 2011, according to United Nations, reported US magazine.

Jolie, 39, making her first public statement post her wedding to actor fiance Brad Pitt, 50, said, “Three million refugees is not just another statistic. It is a searing indictment of our collective failure to end the war in Syria,” she said.
