Curfew relaxed for six hours in violence-hit Saharanpur

Curfew was today relaxed for six hours in the violence-hit district where a peace march was taken out by people belonging to different communities.

“Curfew has been relaxed from 10 AM to 4 PM today,” Saharanpur District Magistrate Sandhya Tiwari said.

Despite the relaxation of the curfew, the shopkeepers did not open their shops.

According to traders, they have incurred loss due to the curfew and have decided to remain shut today as a mark of protest.

Family of eight booked for dowry harassment

A case has been booked against eight persons, including three women, for alleged harassment of a housewife at powerloom town of Bhiwandi in Thane district, police said today.

The complainant, Laxita Khandelwar (24) said in her complaint that she had been subjected to physical torture and harassment by her husband and her in-laws during June 2009 to July 2013, Inspector R L Dhatavkar of Nizampura police station said.

Following her complaint, police booked a case under various sections of IPC yesterday.

New FDI proposals get 90-day timeline

A 90 day maximum time frame was set by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has to process all outstanding FDI proposals in single-brand retail.

Under fire for holding up 13 applications to open single-brand retail outlets from several major foreign retailers which also includes Forever 21, Furla and Swarovski, the DIPP is now attempting to fast-track its approval process to avoid further criticism.

“We will ensure zero pendency of applications at the DIPP and strict compliance to the [90 day] timeline from now on,” a DIPP department official said.

Ban e-rickshaws, high court orders Delhi government

The Delhi High Court Thursday ordered an immediate ban on plying of e-rickshaws in the capital, saying their unregulated operation is “hazardous to other traffic on the road as well as to citizens”.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul asked the Delhi government to ban the battery-operated motor vehicles till its further order.

Rajya Sabha today witnessed uproar for the second consecutive day on the issue of alleged surveillance and phone tapping of Cabinet Ministers, with Opposition forcing two adjournments during the Question Hour.

Members from Congress insisted on a probe into the matter even as Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu tried to pacify them, saying Home Minister Rajnath Singh has already clarified that there was no truth in such reports.

Rs.400 crore alimony news a fabrication: Hrithik Roshan

Reacting to rumours that his estranged wife Sussanne Roshan has demanded an alimony of a whopping Rs.400 crore, actor Hrithik Roshan has said it is “fabricated news”, which is “testing my patience”.

“Fabricated news articles. Demeaning my loved ones. Testing my patience,” Hrithik posted on micro-blogging site Twitter Wednesday night.

Pune landslide: Toll goes up to 28, rescue efforts on

With five more bodies being extricated today from the debris of the landslide that devastated Malin village near here, the death toll has gone up to 28 even as 150 people were still feared to be trapped under the huge mound of mud-and-rock debris.

While recovering 28 bodies as part the rescue operation since yesterday morning, the NDRF jawans also rescued eight injured persons who were being treated at nearby hospitals, Pune Deputy Collector Suresh Jadhav told PTI.

(Siasat News): Police Chaderghat has registered a case against a 50-year-old man under Nirbhaya Act. As per the details the accused Baba alias David who is a car driver, molested a 10-year-old girl.

Inspector Chaderghat Mr. Raja Venkat Reddy that the complaint was lodged against Baba by the girl’s parents. Police immediately came into action and arrested Baba from his Kamla Nagar residence

India gave befitting reply to Pak after beheading incident: Gen Bikram Singh

Outgoing Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh today said that India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan after the beheading of an Indian soldier by Pakistani troops in 2013 along the Line of Control (LoC) even as he did not rule out the possibility of skirmishes on the western front in future.

Talking to reporters before demitting office, he admitted that face-offs between Indian and Chinese Army soldiers take place while patrolling their ‘claimed areas’ along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) but they are dealt with in accordance with the existing mechanisms.

Woman dies of burns at Chaderghat

A woman died of burns at Chaderghat. The incident is said to have happened yesterday in the house of Khaleeluddin Javeed, at Osman Pura. According to police sources the tragedy occurred due to gas leakage. In the accident Naseem Sultana wife of Khaleeluddin Javeed sustained severe burn injuries. She succumbed to burn injuries yesterday night. Police has registered a case and investigations are underway.

Kerry visits IIT; walks out impressed with students

“Very exciting” and “excellent” were the words used by US Secretary of State John Kerry as he visited two laboratories at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology here today and interacted with the students.

Kerry, who is here for the 5th Indo-US Strategic Dialogue, took time out of his schedule and visited the Applied Microbiology Laboratory and Bio-process lab.

Professor R K Shevgaonkar, Director of the IIT, Delhi told PTI that the American Embassy had specifically mentioned the laboratories that Kerry wanted to visit.

Oz pole vault champ Hooker’s wife banned for two years for using drugs

Australian pole vault champion Steve Hooker’s wife, Russian 1500m runner Ekaterina Kostetskaya, has been banned from the Commonwealth Games for two years after being charged with using drugs.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Kostetskaya was charged under IAAF Rule 32.2b for “use/attempted use of a prohibited substance/method” at the 2011 world championships in Daegu, where she finished fifth in the 800 m.

She received a two-year ban and isn’t eligible to compete again until January 20, 2015.

Army Chief General Bikram Singh visits Amar Jawan Jyoti before superannuating

Outgoing Chief of Army Staff General Bikram Singh visited the Amar Jawan Jyoti here on Thursday before demitting office.

After paying tribute to the martyred Indian soldiers, Gen. Singh wrote a few words in the visitor’s book before departing from the venue.

Gen. Bikram Singh will be handing over charge to Lt. Gen. Dalbir Suhag, who will formally assume office on August 1.

Lt. Gen Suhag, 59, a Gurkha officer who had participated in the 1987 Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operation in Sri Lanka, is currently the Vice Chief of Army Staff.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will hold a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Public Sector Banks and Financial Institutions on comprehensive financial inclusion plan today.

During the meeting, various issues relating to ongoing financial inclusion campaign, including the role of business correspondents, technology issues and universal access to banking facilities among others will be discussed.

This will be the first meeting of Jaitley with the CEOs of Public Sector Banks and Financial Institutions after taking over the charge of the Ministry in May 2014.

Rajya Sabha adjourned till noon over bugging allegations

The Rajya Sabha was Thursday adjourned till noon after opposition members created an uproar to demand a debate on the reported bugging at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Delhi residence.

As soon as the Rajya Sabha met at 11.20 am after the first adjournment, Leader of Opposition in the upper house, Ghulam Nabi Azad along with other opposition members including Naresh Aggarwal of the Samajwadi Party demanded a debate on the issue.

“If there are allegations that a cabinet minister’s phone is being tapped, then it’s a serious matter and needs to be discussed,” Azad said.
