Israel approves 24 hour extension of humanitarian ceasefire

Israeli security cabinet Saturday night approved a 24-hour extension to the just ended UN-brokered humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, media reports said.

The Israeli security cabinet voted to approve a humanitarian truce in Gaza until midnight Sunday. During this period, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) will continue to neutralise Gaza tunnels and will respond to any incoming attacks, Xinhua reported citing the Istraeli daily Haaretz.

The Israeli cabinet will now discuss the next step in the country’s military operation in Gaza.

Bihar CM misleading Assembly, public: Sushil Modi

Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Legislative Council, Sushil Kumar Modi today alleged that Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi was misleading the Assembly and confusing the public over non-availability of post-matriculation scholarship for students belonging to Other Backward Castes (OBC) and Extremely Backward Castes (EBC).

Iraq jihadist dynamite Shiite shrine in Mosul

Sunni militants from the Islamic State group that controls large parts of Iraq have blown up a Shiite shrine in the city of Mosul, an official and witnesses said today.

Jihadists destroyed the Nabi Shiyt (Prophet Seth) shrine in Mosul, the de facto Iraqi capital of the “caliphate” proclaimed last month by Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

PM Modi wants to speed up cases against netas

PM Narendra Modi wants criminal cases against politicians to be expedited.

Expressing concerns at the long time taken to settle such cases, Modi has asked Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to draw up a roadmap that would help speed up court hearings in these cases.

14 cops suspended for abetting ‘ drug- peddling’

3 dead in communal clashes in Saharanpur, curfew imposed, shoot-at-sight ordered

Three persons were killed and 19 others, including policemen, injured today as violent clashes broke out between two communities over a land dispute in Saharanpur as mobs indulged in arson, after which curfew was clamped and shoot-at-sight ordered.

“Three persons, including traders leader Harish Kochar, Arif and an unidentified person were killed in clashes between the two communities,” Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukul Goel told PTI in Lucknow.

Gujarat tops in swine flu deaths

Gujurat could well claim to be on the top with its development model. But what comes off as a reflection of its shoddy health infrastructure is that the state registered the maximum deaths — 31 — due to swine flu this year.

Of the total of 89 people affected by swine flu across the state, 35 have died. The number of swine flu patients is next only to Karnataka, which registered 143 cases with a death toll of 11. Rajasthan is next to Gujarat with 22 deaths.

Saharanpur clashes: UP govt announces aid of Rs 10 lakh to kin

The Uttar Pradesh government tonight announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of the three persons killed in clashes between two communities in Saharanpur.

An official spokesman said that Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.

The state government has also sought a report of the entire incident from the district administration.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has termed the incident as “unfortunate” and said that those responsible will not be spared.

Gaza death toll tops 1,000 as Israel extends temporary truce

Gaza residents today used a temporary humanitarian truce agreed to by Israel and Hamas on a UN request to pull out bodies from mounds of rubble and metal of bombed homes, as the Palestinian death toll in the conflict rose to over 1,000 with mostly civilian casualties.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a 12-hour humanitarian truce which the Jewish state later extended by four hours till midnight local time.

But shortly after the original truce expired at 1700 GMT, the Israeli military reported three mortar rounds fired from Gaza.

Approach to Indian shooting has changed: Rahi Sarnobat

Upbeat after winning the women’s 25-metre pistol gold at the Commonwealth Games, Rani Sarnobat Saturday said the success of the Indian shooters in the international arena is due to better training venues and good coaches.

“The approach of India to shooting has changed – we have Olympic medals as well as Commonwealth medals. We train in better venues, (have) good coaches and I think that reflects in our shooting,” said 23-year-old Rahi.

She also expressed her happiness over compatriot Anisa Sayyed bagging the silver from the same event.

Indian lifter Otari wins 69 kg bronze

Indian weightlifter Omkar Otari won the men’s 69 kg bronze medal late Saturday after he lifted a total weight of 296 kg at the Commonwealth Games here.

The gold went to Mohd Hafifi Mansor, who lifted a total of 305 kg, while Nigeria’s Yinka Ayenuwa took the silver with a lift of 302 kg at the Clyde auditorium.

The 26-year-old helped India win its 17th medal at the Games and sixth from the discipline.

Earlier Saturday, India had two won golds and three silvers from shooting and one bronze from judo.

40 arrested in Paris as anti-Israel protest turns violent

At least 40 people were arrested in the French capital Saturday after an anti-Israel protest involving several thousand people turned violent, media reports said.

Hamas rejects to extend ceasefire for extra four hours

The Islamic Hamas movement said Saturday night that it has rejected Israel’s four-hour extension proposal to the just ended UN-brokered 12-hour humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas and the Palestinian factions didn’t agree on extending the humanitarian ceasefire for another four hours, Xinhua quoted Hamas spokesperon Sami Abu Zuhri as saying in a statement.

Mahmoud al-Zahar, a top Hamas leader in Gaza, said that any international initiative concerning the aggression on Gaza “must bear in mind our people’s sacrifices and the distinct ability of our armed resistance”.

Indian track cyclists Amrit Singh, Amarjit Nagi and Alan Baby disappointed in the men’s 1,000-metre time trial as they finished 13th, 14th and 16th in the Commonwealth Games here Saturday.
