India’s forex reserves up $163 mn

India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $163 million to $317.84 billion for the week ended July 19, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed.

The reserves had increased by $643.2 million to $317.03 billion for the week ended July 11.

According to the RBI’s weekly statistical supplement, foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves, also gained by $163 million to $291.05 billion for the week under review.

The foreign currency assets had increased gained $648.7 million to $290.22 billion in the previous week.

UN brokers 24-hour ceasefire between Israel, Hamas

Israel has reportedly agreed to observe ceasefire for 24 hours in Gaza but has warned that it will react if the agreement is breached by Hamas militants.

A crisis cabinet extended Saturday’s ceasefire till Sunday midnight (21:00 GMT), reported the BBC. The decision comes despite Hamas launching air strikes at Israel earlier in order to prevent the truce from being prolonged.

Pakistani woman climbs world’s seven highest peaks

Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to climb seven highest peaks in seven continents in under eight months, media reported Sunday.

Baig, 23, has completed the challenge of climbing seven of the highest mountains around the world, including Mount Everest which she scaled in May 2013, Dawn online reported.

Baig accompanied by her brother Mirza Ali, flew out to Russia, after Alaska, where they went on to scale the highest mountain in Europe, Mt Elbrus in Russia, which is 5,642 metres tall, bringing their ‘Seven Summits’ adventure to an end.

AP capital: final report next month

The final report regarding selection of capital for Andhra Pradesh will be submitted to the central government by August 20. A committee was constituted to select capital city for Andhra Pradesh state headed by Mr. Shiva Rama Krishnan. Typhoon Matmo kills 13 in China

Thirteen people have been killed and about 2.5 million civilians affected as Typhoon Matmo swept through eight provinces of China, officials said Sunday.

Nine deaths were reported in east China’s Jiangxi province and four were reported in south China’s Guangdong province, Xinhua reported.

More than 2.54 million people has been affected as the impact of the typhoon spread to eight provinces of Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong and Guangdong.

About 289,000 civilians have been relocated and 37,000 are in urgent need of basic amenities.

Ready for negotiations to free abducted girls, says Nigeria

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Joy Ogwu said the country is open to negotiations in order to secure the release of over 200 schoolgirls who were abducted in April.

Ogwu Saturday was speaking on the latest terrorist attacks in northern Kaduna and Kano, which killed several Nigerians and injured many others.

It is now more than 100 days after the schoolgirls were abducted by Islamist militant group Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno.

Syrian army recaptures key gas field

The Syrian troops have recaptured a key gas field after intense fighting with militants of the Islamic State, the military said in a statement.

The Syrian army, backed by the National Defence Forces, Saturday recaptured the al-Shaer gas field after a “precise and qualitative” operation in the central Homs province, Xinhua cited from the statement.

The statement said troops killed many militants during this operation.

The bomb squads dismantled mines and explosive devices the IS fighters had planted in that area, the statement added.

Eight militants killed in Afghan attack

At least eight militants were killed Sunday in a Taliban attack on a police official’s house in Afghanistan, a security source said.

The incident took place in the Kandahar province.

“At least 10 militants were involved in the attack which occurred around 7.30 a.m.,” the source told Xinhua.

The source said two bombers detonated their explosive-laden jackets, while another six of the attackers were killed by the security forces.

It is not clear if police official General Abdul Raziq was in the building when the attack took place, the source added.

Abducted Iraqi official released

An Iraqi official who along with his security guards was abducted here has been released, an official said Sunday.

“Riyadh al-Adhadh and his guards have been released by their kidnappers,” an interior ministry official told Xinhua.

Al-Adhadh has reached his house in Adhamiyah district in northern Baghdad and has informed the security forces about his safety, the official said.

The head of Baghdad Provincial Council and four of his bodyguards were kidnapped from his house Friday night by unknown gunmen disguised in security uniforms.

Saharanpur violence: District Magistrate claims situation under control

District Magistrate of Saharanpur, Sandhya Tiwari, today indicated that the situation in the area was returning towards normalcy and claimed that no new instances of violence have occurred since it all started yesterday.

“We are moving towards normal situation now. We are in total control of the situation. No new instances have come up and people are following the curfew,” Tiwari told ANI.

When asked about the chances of relaxing the curfew in the area, the District Magistrate said, “After two hours, we will discuss on this issue and then will take the decision.”

Man going to office shot dead in Ghaziabad

Unidentified assailants on Saturday shot dead a man going to office, police said. The incident took place near CISF underpass in Indirapuram.

Dinesh Negi, 35, a resident of Vasundhara area was going to his Noida office on a motorcycle. As he reached the underpass, two men on a motorcycle drew near and the pillion rider fired two shots at him before they fled the scene.

On the call from some locals, police reached the spot and took Negi to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Algerian PM blames bad weather for plane crash

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal has said the Air Algerie flight AH5017 crashed probably due to bad weather.

The aircraft encountered complicated weather conditions, including thick clouds, strong wind and a sand storm, soon after takeoff, Xinhua quoted Sellal as saying Saturday.

There is no information to indicate that rebels in northern Mali, where the airliner crashed, were equipped with weapons capable of hitting the aircraft flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres, Sellal added.
