Bangalore child-rape case: Cops issue tough guidelines to schools

In the fallout of alleged rape of a six-year old girl at a public school that triggered public outrage, police on Saturday issued tough guidelines to schools here for safety of children and warned of prosecution in the event of its non-compliance.

Under the guidelines, school buses should fix GPS and CCTV cameras and drivers should be isolated and not allowed to mingle with the children after they had parked the vehicles.

Close comet flyby puts NASA’s Mars spacecraft at risk

As a comet heads towards a close flyby of Mars Oct 19 this year, NASA is taking steps to protect its Mars orbiters while preserving opportunities to gather valuable scientific data, the US space agency said in a statement.

The “C/2013 A1 Siding Spring” comet’s nucleus will miss Mars by about 132,000 km, shedding material hurtling at about 56 km per second, relative to Mars and Mars-orbiting spacecraft.

At that velocity, even the smallest particle – estimated to be about half a millimetre across – could cause significant damage to a spacecraft.

Facebook is soon to launch a new feature that will let its users flag content like movies, music, TV shows and links for later viewing.

Called “Save”, the new function will let you move content in a specified list within the social network.

“The new function is convenient because users would not have to be redirected to a different service to save a link from their news feed,” the company said in a statement.

“Save” will be available on Android and iOS devices.

Top-seven firms add Rs 76,793 cr in market valuation

Helped by a smart rally in the market valuation of IT bellwether TCS, the top-seven most valued Indian companies together added Rs 76,793 crore in their market capitalisation (m-cap) last week.

Amid a strong stock market where the benchmark Sensex gained 485.19 points or 1.89 percent, top-seven companies, including RIL, ITC, CIL, HDFC Bank, Infosys and HDFC, saw surge in their m-cap.

ONGC, SBI and ICICI Bank, however, suffered losses in their market valuation.

GoAir Q1 traffic up 21% to 1.7 mn on non-metro push

Wadias’ promoted budget carrier GoAir has recorded a 21 percent growth in traffic on the back of capacity addition and an expanded route network in non-metro markets in the first quarter of the fiscal.

“Our passenger traffic grew 21.42 percent in the June quarter as we carried 3 lakh more passengers during the period. During the quarter, our total passenger traffic stood at 1.7 million against 1.4 last year,” an official of the city-based airline said.

This growth was achieved following addition of new flights and destinations, the official added.

Office space absorption up 11% in Delhi-NCR

Office space absorption rose 11 percent to 1.38 million sq ft in Delhi-NCR during the April- June quarter, over the year-ago period, on higher demand from IT/ITeS sector, global property consultant DTZ said.

However, the absorption fell by 18 percent when compared with the previous quarter.

“Office space in Delhi NCR witnessed total take-up of 1.38 million sq ft in Q2, representing a decrease of 18 percent q-o-q (quarter-on-quarter) but an increase of 11 percent y-o-y (year-on-year),” DTZ said in its report ‘Property Times Delhi NCR Q2 2014’.

Rupee snaps 2-week losing streak; ends at 60.10 Vs dollar

The rupee broke its two-week of losing streak and appreciated by 18 paise to close at 60.10 against the American currency during the week under review following bullish local equities amid fresh dollar selling by exporters.

Continued capital inflows also aided the rupee recovery.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit commenced slightly better at 60.25 a dollar from last weekend’s close of 60.28 and dropped to a low of 60.3250 on dollar demand from importers, mainly oil refiners, to meet their month-end requirements.

10,000 People protest against Gaza genocide in London

More 10,000 pro- Palestinian protesters opposed to Israel’s military action in Gaza marched through central London for the second consecutive week on Saturday.

The march started outside the Israeli embassy in Kensington before passing Downing Street and coming to a halt outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

Demonstrators held placards reading Stop Israeli State Terror!, Freedom for Palestine and Gaza — End the Siege. They also chanted Shame on you David Cameron as they filed past the British prime minister’s Downing Street office.

Suzlon board approves Rs 5,000 cr fund raising proposal

Suzlon Energy’s board has approved a proposal to raise up to Rs 5,000 crore through the issue of securities.

It is an “enabling resolution to facilitate the company to raise funds at an appropriate time should that be required,” the wind turbine maker said in a regulatory filing today.

During a meeting held yesterday, the board also gave its nod for increasing the company’s authorised share capital from Rs 1,100 crore to Rs 1,500 crore.

India tops in South Asia’s human trafficking: UN official

India has emerged as the top destination for human trafficking in South Asia, a top UN official has said.

South Asia representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Cristina Albertine, said that a majority of the victims are from Bangladesh and Nepal.

“India is a top destination for human trafficking in South Asia. People are trafficked from Nepal, the Gulf, Bangladesh and so on.” Albertine told IANS in an interview at the UNODC office.

Albertine said that there is no exact figure on human trafficking in India as only a few studies have been done.

Railway Widow staffer gang- raped for years in Sealdah

A woman working with Railways on Saturday alleged that four co- workers had gang- raped her for years in Sealdah. Three persons were arrested for the crime.

The victim, a married woman, had lodged an FIR with Dum Dum GRP on Friday, accusing four co- workers of Chitpur railyard in the city of gangraping her on several occasions inside the railyard.

“ They raped me for the last few years and whenever I asked them to stop, they threatened me to upload those obscene pictures on internet. They had also threatened to kill me,” the victim said in her complaint.

Forensic experts identify first MH17 crash victim

The team investigating the MH17 crash in Ukraine has reportedly identified the first of the 298 persons on board who was killed when the plane was shot with a surface to air missile on July 17.

A statement released by the Dutch government, who is leading the investigation, confirmed on Saturday that the victim was Dutch and added that the victim’s family and the mayor of the town in which they live have been informed, reported News 24.

Out of the 298 people that the Boeing 777 aircraft was carrying, 193 were Dutch.

The Samajwadi Party Saturday named Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephew Tejas Singh Yadav as its candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha bypolls in Mainpuri, the constituency vacated by his uncle and party chief.

Tejas, the son of Mulayam Singh’s brother, has been active in the area for some time now.
