100 Indians committed suicide in the UAE every year since 2011

Around 100 Indians have committed suicide in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) every year since 2011, India’s ambassador here said, calling on the expatriate community to help people in distress, particularly those with
financial problems.

These suicides form part of about 1,300 recorded deaths within the Indian community each year, ambassador T P
Seetharam told a local newspaper.

There are roughly a 100 cases of suicide out of 1,300 deaths in a year within the community of 2.5 million people.

Narayana fails to qualify for women’s 100m semis

Indian sprinter Narayana Sharadha failed to qualify for the women’s 100 metre semi-final after finishing fifth out of eight competitors in the heat at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

Jamaica’s Schillonie Calvert, Sheniqua Ferguson of Bahamas and Canadian Crystal Carly-Kristen Emmanuel qualified for the semis to be run at the Hampden Park Stadium Monday.

While Schillonie topped the heat clocking 11.29 seconds, the 27-year-old Chennai woman finished the race in 11.81 seconds.

Man jumps onto Delhi Metro track, injured

A 35-year-old man was injured Sunday evening when he jumped onto a Delhi Metro rail track here in an attempt to commit suicide, police said.

Kapil Grover, a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, jumped from platform No.2 at the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar Metro station in north Delhi around 6.30 p.m.

He received injuries to his head and elbow on being slightly hit by the Metro train running between Jahangirpuri and Huda City Centre on the Yellow Line.

Shot putter Karhana fails to qualify for finals

Indian shot putter Om Parkash Singh Karhana failed to reach the men’s finals after he finished fifth in his Group B qualification at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

Jamaica’s O’Dayne Richards and South Africa’s Orazio Cremona qualified from the group for the finals, to be played Monday, with throws of 20.24m and 20.03m at the Hampden Park Stadium.

Karhana, who hails from Gurgaon, threw a best of 18.98m on his third and final attempt. His first two throws went for 17.67m and 18.54m, respectively.

Three killed in lightning strike in Bihar

Three persons including two women were killed and another woman suffered burns today when lightning struck them at Gauradih in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district.

The police said the incident happened at Swaroopchak village in Gauradih police station in the district when all of
them were planting paddy in their agriculture fields.

It was raining heavily but they kept working in the fields when thunderbolt struck them.

The deceased have been identified as Sundari Devi, Usha Devi and Uday Yadav.

ICC urges Dhoni, Cook to show respect to its judicial process

Stung by criticisms from Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Alastair Cook on the Ravindra Jadeja-James Anderson row, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested both the Indian and England skippers to show restraint and have respect in the judicial process that went into the alleged altercation during the first Test in Nottingham.

Dhoni has slammed ICC’s decision to fine Jadeja 50 percent of his match fee for the all-rounder’s getting into an altercation with Anderson. Dhoni slammed the ICC saying “a lot of things were neglected in judging the case”.

Protests in Ludhiana over UP clashes

Activists of various Sikh organisations including the Sikh Students Federation (SSF) today protested against the Uttar Pradesh government for its alleged failure in containing violence in Saharanpur.

Four gangrape accused sent to 7 days’ police remand

A city court today sent all four persons accused in the alleged gangrape of a woman working along with them in the Railways to seven days’ police remand.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Sealdah Court granted police custody of all the four accused on a plea by the prosecution for their interrogation till August two.

While three of the accused – Jeet, Manish and Gajendra – were arrested during the day yesterday, the fourth one Raju was arrested late last night, the police said.

Four of a family killed in accident in Bihar

Four persons belonging to a family were killed today and three children seriously injured when the vehicle they were traveling in dashed against a stationary container carrier in East Champaran district of Bihar.

Police officials said the accident happened near Wattganj village under Piprakothi police station of the
district.

Piprakothi Station House Officer Sanjeev Kumar said that the family was going to Kotwa in East Champaran from
Muzaffarpur when it lost control and dashed into the container carrier.

All the deceased are in twenties and early thirties.

Boxer Manoj enters 64 kg quarters

Indian boxer Manoj Kumar entered the quarterfinals of the men’s 64 kg event at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

The 27-year-old defeated Canadian Arthur Biyarslanov 2:1 in the Round of 16 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Manoj won the first two rounds with the exact score line of 29 points to Biyarslanov’s 28. Though the Canadian came back to win the third and final round with reversed scores, it was too late for him as the judges ruled in favour of the Indian.

In the last eight, Manoj will take on England’s Samuel Maxwell Tuesday.

Three house surgeons killed in mishap

Three house surgeons were killed and two of their colleagues seriously injured when their car rammed a stationary mini lorry and fell into a nearby pit at nearby Chinnayan Chathiram today, police said.

All of them were house surgeons at the Siddha medical college in Salem.

While two of them died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries at Chengalpattu medical college Hospital. The
seriously injured were rushed to the Government General Hospital in Chennai, police said.

The lorry driver was not injured.

The Arab Parliament (AP) Sunday condemned the escalation of violence in Libya, warning that the situation threatens Arab national security.

AP President Ahmed Mohammed Al Jarwan demanded that all the involved parties exert joint efforts to preserve territorial integrity and unity of Libya and realise political and security stability.

Al Jarwan affirmed AP’s support for Arab diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving unity of Libya and reconcile warring factions.

He called for immediate halt to fighting between armed groups that shed Arab blood.

Man dies in scuffle over parking

A 57-year-old man man died Sunday morning in a clash with four neighbours over a parking issue, police here said.

Rajender Bhatia got into a fight with his neighbours – Dharmender, 50, Kartik, 28, Ashok, 57, and his son Mohit, 28 – around 11.30 a.m. near his house in Patel Nagar area in central Delhi.

Police said that Bhatia suddenly fell on the ground during the scuffle.

“Bhatia was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told IANS.

Body found hanging in minister quarters premises

Body of a man was today found hanging from a tree in the premises of the government quarters allotted to senior BJD leader and former Odisha Minister Pramila Mallik here, police said.

The deceased, identified as Surendra Routray (35) of Binjharpur area in Jajpur district was found hanging from a
tree inside the compound of the quarters, Inspector In-Charge of Capital Police Station, Manas Gadnayak said.

13 including two children,killed in Ukraine rebel city clashes

Thirteen people including two children were killed today in fierce clashes in the key insurgent holdout of Gorlivka in east Ukraine where government troops are battling rebel fighters, local authorities said.

“As a result of military actions in Gorlivka 13 people have died, among them two children of one and five,” the
Donetsk regional administration said in a statement, adding that operations by medical teams in the crucial insurgent
base, a city of some 250,000 around 45 kilometres north of Donetsk, were hampered by “constant shooting”.
