Bacteria can help find alien life

A discovery on how bacteria interact with salt to build complex three-dimensional shelters to hibernate has led scientists to believe that the micro-organisms can help find signs of life on other planets.

“Given the richness and complexity of these formations, they may be used as biosignatures in the search for life in extremely dry environments outside our own planet, such as the surface of Mars or that of Jupiter’s satellite, Europa,” said biologist Jose Maria Gomez from Laboratory of BioMineralogy and Astrobiological Research (LBMARS) at University of Valladolid-CSIC, Spain.

DU student accuses friend of raping her in Ghaziabad flat

A 25-year-old Delhi University student was allegedly raped by her friend in Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad.

Police said the incident took place on Saturday evening when the accused, identified as Anil Sharma, took the girl to a flat in Vijay Nagar area and allegedly raped her.

Sharma and the girl, a resident of Mehrauli area of south Delhi, were good friends for a year.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl, a Zero FIR has been registered at Mehrauli police station as the incident has been reported in Ghaziabad.

Mother-son duo found dead, father missing from the crime scene

A 30-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Govindpuri area of south Delhi yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Sommati and Kamal.

Police said that the incident came to light this evening when some neighbours of the deceased smelled foul smell emanating from their house.

“Sensing something has gone wrong, neighbours immediately called up police, which broke open the house’s door only to find Sommati and her son Kamal dead there.

Woman dies of burns, family accuses her in-laws of murder

A 35-year-old woman, who had sustained severe burn injuries under mysterious circumstances in Rohini, died at a hospital here yesterday.

Police have registered a case of dowry harassment after family members of the woman, identified as Savita Agarwal, alleged that she was set on fire by her in-laws.

He in-laws, however, denied the allegations and claimed that she committed suicide by setting herself on fire. Agarwal was admitted to the Safdurjung Hospital on Tuesday night with 90 per cent burn injuries.

Army’s big leap, women could be in commanding position

The National Democratic Alliance or NDA government is now going to allow women officers to command battalions in the army’s branches such as aviation, engineers and signal.

According to army sources, the government is planning to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court where it will say that women officers joining the force from 2015-16 onwards will be trained to command battalions.

Besides, they would be allowed to compete with their male counterparts to be eligible to head the units.

2.5 bn smartphone users globally by 2015: US report

Nearly 2.5 billion people or 35 percent of the global population is expected to use smartphones by the end of 2015, says the latest report of US-based industry tracker Strategy Analytics.

The reason behind this surge is the expansion of low-end smartphones by global players that has helped them make inroads into emerging markets in the developing countries like India.

“The Asia-Pacific region holds the most number of smartphone users while Europe and North America have the highest portion of people holding the high-tech handsets among all mobile phone users,” the report said.

DSGMC president open to All India Act for Gurudwaras

The president of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh GK said on Monday that he has no objection if the All India Act is made and all the Gurudwara Committees fall under it.

Singh told ANI, “They have said that the Delhi Gurudwara Committee should come under SGPC. As per my understanding, Delhi Gurudwara Committee has already stamped the All India Act. According to that, all the Gurudwaras should come under one act.”

Normalcy returning in Saharnpur, says District Magistrate

Curfew still on in Saharanpur, situation tense

The situation in violence-hit areas of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where three people were killed in communal violence two days ago, continued to be tense Monday, forcing authorities to extend the curfew in some areas.

There were a few minor incidents of stone-pelting in some areas but the situation was by and large under control, police said.

Police and para-military personnel had been deployed in the sensitive areas of the city, district police chief Rajesh Pandey said.

An Australian solar car has broken a 26-year-old world speed record, potentially establishing itself as the fastest electric vehicle over a distance of 500 kilometres, on a single battery charge.

The world record was made by a team of University of New South Wales students at a racetrack in Geelong, Victoria. The car achieved an average speed of more than 100 kmph during the attempt, bettering the previous world record of 73 kmph.

Two killed in Italian chopper crash

A pilot and a technician were killed in an Italian city Sunday as their firefighting helicopter crashed.

The incident, which occurred in the city of Rieti in central Italy, left the co-pilot badly wounded. He was rushed to a hospital in serious condition, Xinhua quoted media reports as saying.

The victims, aged 60 and 67, were confirmed dead soon after the crash, which occurred near a lake in the area while the firefighter helicopter was carrying out a flight training, according to local authorities.
