No make-up for Big B in ‘Yudh’

Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be seen without make-up in his much awaited TV show `Yudh`. The 71-year-old actor plays the character of a real estate baron, Yudhisthir Sikarwar, in the upcoming show.

Anurag Kashyap, the creative director of the show, took a deliberate decision of `no makeup` for the artists and the entire cast welcomed it.

RIP Orkut! Google to shut down website on Sep 30

Orkut, Google’s first social networking site, will cease to exist after September, with the Internet giant deciding to shut down the service launched 10 years ago.

Google said it will shut down Orkut, which is very popular in India and Brazil, on September 30.

The service, however, did not do so well in other parts of the world and lost sheen to rivals like Facebook.

Orkut, which popularised posts or “scraps” between friends, did not disclose the number of users on the website.

Goa minister wants ban on wearing short skirts to clubs

Goa’s Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar wants to ban young girls from wearing short skirts to nightclubs of Goa.

“Young girls wearing short skirts in nightclubs are a threat to the Goan culture,” Dhavalikar told reporters on the sidelines of an inauguration function in Panaji late Monday.

“This habit of young girls wearing short dresses everywhere does not fit the Goan culture. What will happen to it if this continues? We should not allow this. It should be stopped,” Dhavalikar said.

Udita wanted to be a rock star

Filmmaker Mohit Suri says his wife Udita Goswami is “musically inclined” and wanted to be a rock star but ended up being an actor.

His cousin Pooja Bhatt had launched Udita in Bollywood with her 2003 film “Paap” and two years later Suri directed the actress in her second film “Zeher”.

“Udita wanted to be a rock star but ended up being an actor. She is more musically inclined,” said Suri who tied the knot with Udita in 2013 after dating her for about nine years.

“Right now she is doing her music production course. She is already working it out to perform as a DJ,” he added.

Preity Zinta set to make a comeback as rustic bandit

Actress-businesswoman Preity Zinta, whose current legal conflict with ex-beau Ness Wadia scorched the headlines, is set to make a comeback with Neeraj Pathak’s “Bhaiyyaji”, in which she plays a ferocious bandit.

The film will also feature Sunny Deol as a gangster from Uttar Pradesh.

According to Pathak, Preity has pulled it off with aplomb.

Six killed in mishap at Pratapgarh district

Six persons, including two children, were killed and two others seriously injured when their car collided head-on with a truck in Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district on tuesday.

The incident occurred at Semalia Ghata when the victims were on their way to Ajmer from Banswara, police said.

A man, three women and two children died on the spot, they said.

The injured have been admitted to a government hospital in Udaipur.

Nandita Pal said, “Whatever he said is not right. I am sorry about it.”

Her husband Tapas Pal had invited widespread condemnation by saying, “I will send my boys to their (attackers) homes and ask them to rape their women. If any of our Trinamool men are touched, I will ensure that the CPI (M) is finished and ensure that their homes are burnt.”

Among the chemicals produced by the ocean-dwelling microbes, which have been found in habitats as diverse as sea grasses, marine sediments and corals, is a potent endocrine disruptor that mimics the human body’s most active thyroid hormone.

NHRC seeks reports from Centre, states on issue of defecation in open and lack of toilets

The National Human Rights Commission has sought reports from the Secretary in the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories within four weeks on the issue of defecation in open and lack of toilets.

A survey proved that 30 per cent women who went out for toilet became victims of sexual assault. The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights.

US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue on July 9-10

The next round of annual US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue would be held in Beijing on July 9 and 10.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew would travel to China next week for this comprehensive dialogue between the two countries.

They would be joined for the Dialogue by their respective Chinese co-chairs, State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Vice Premier Wang Yang, along with members of the US delegation and their Chinese counterparts.

Work comes to standstill in Waqf Board due to absence of Special Officer

Due to absence of a special officer in the state Waqf Board the work has come to standstill; uncertainty prevails even in the payment of salary.

Now that the holy month of Ramadan has begun Waqf Board employees fear non-payment of salaries on July 1 because only Special Officer is authorised to issue cheque to bank for payment of salaries and the post is vacant.

Waqf Board sources said that Waqf Board releases salaries of its workers only after the signatures of Special Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

Bilateral agreement useless without India’s clearance

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Najam Sethi has admitted that without the clearance of the Indian government the bilateral six-series agreement signed with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was useless.

“We are very hopeful that the first series of this agreement will be played next year in December because everything is now on paper but eventually everything will depend on clearance from the Indian government,” he told the media in Lahore today.

Two elephants crushed to death in Jalpaiguri

Two male elephants were crushed to death by a speeding train at a level crossing in Alipurduar in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday.

The incident happened when the two wild elephants from nearby forest were crossing the track near the Madha tea garden between Hashimara and Hemiltongonj, deputy field director of Baksa (West) forest range Apurba Sen said.

The seriously injured animals succumbed to their injuries, he said.

The pachyderms were hit by a Guwahati-bound train from New Delhi carrying army personnel.

US deploys more troops in Iraq

US President Barack Obama said that about 200 troops arrived in Iraq to protect the US embassy in Baghdad amidst fierce fighting in the war-torn country, a media report said Tuesday.

The new troops, who arrived Sunday and Monday, will provide security for the embassy, the Baghdad airport and other facilities in Iraq, CNN quoted Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby as saying.

The deployment includes “a detachment of helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, which will bolster airfield and travel route security,” Kirby said in a statement.

Somnath Chatterjee drowsy but stable

The condition of former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee admitted to a private hospital after suffering a cerebral stroke was stable, though he continues to be drowsy, doctors said Tuesday.

“His condition is stable, but he is drowsy and not fully conscious. He is still not able to take food orally. We have done a few tests and will conduct some more to determine presence of any brain infection,” attending doctor Subir Mondal told IANS.

Chatterjee was hospitalised Sunday evening.

This is the second time in the last six months that the 84-year-old has been hospitalised.

Heavy rain lashes Lucknow

Residents of Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow woke up to heavy rains on Tuesday that brought down the temperature, giving much relief to the people from the hot and humid weather.

It started raining a little before 7 am and continued for more than an hour. The city like other regions has been reeling under unprecedented heat wave conditions for the past one month.

The last month was the third driest June in Lucknow in the past 114 years, said Met officials, adding that the rainfall recorded in June was only 92.4 mm.

Manali-Leh deluxe bus service restarted

A deluxe bus service that connects this Himachal Pradesh town to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir restarted on Tuesday after remaining closed for over seven months due to snowfall, an official said.

One-way fare is Rs 2,500, which includes a night’s stay at Keylong, dinner and breakfast.

“The 35-seater bus will leave Manali twice a week at 9 am. After stopping overnight at Keylong (in Lahaul-Spiti district), it will reach Leh next day in the evening,” Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) general manager Yogesh Behl told a news agency.

PM takes stock of rising prices, asks states to take measures

Concerned over the rise in prices of food items, the Centre Monday swung into action with Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking stock of the situation and the states being told to take urgent measures against hoarding and ensure “uninterrupted” flow of supplies.

The Centre has also called a meeting of state Food and Consumer Affairs ministers here on July 4 to discuss measures to contain inflation, that rose to 6.01 percent in May.

The meeting, to be chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, will discuss among other things implementation of the National Food Security Act.

French Foreign Minister to meet PM Narendra Modi today

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius will on Tuesday call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

Fabius had on Monday said he would be extending an invite from President Francois Hollande to the Indian PM to visit France.

The Prime Minister’s official visit to France could be in September, when Modi visits New York for the UN General Assembly, Fabius said.

As soon as Fabius arrived in India on Monday, he had voiced confidence that the USD 20 billion deal for the purchase of 126 Rafale combat jets would be inked soon.
