Father-son duo killed over a land dispute in Moga

A father and his son were allegedly killed in a clash between two families over a land dispute in Khosa Kotla village here Tuesday, police said.

Five members of family allegedly armed with fire arms and lethal weapons today attacked the father-son duo identified as Darshan Singh (50) and his son Kirpal Singh (25), killing them on the spot, police said.

The other family members allegedly involved in the brutal attack are identified as Pyara Sngh, Mukhtiar Singh, Avtar Singh, Jaspal Singh and Rachpal Singh police said.

Tens of thousands stage Hong Kong pro-democracy march

Clutching banners and chanting slogans, tens of thousands of protesters today began a pro-democracy rally in Hong Kong that organisers say could be the largest since the city was handed back to China.

The rally reflects surging discontent over Beijing’s insistence that it vet candidates before a vote in 2017 for the semi-autonomous city’s next leader.

The march comes after nearly 800,000 people voted in an informal referendum to demand a electoral mechanism that allows voters to nominate candidates.

Naxal arrested by BSF in Chhattisgarh

A Naxal, wanted in several incidents of crime, has been arrested during a search operation in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-hit Kanker district.

The cadre, identified as Daya Ram Dhruve (21), was nabbed from Bilaikachhar village under Siksod police station limits last evening, Kanker Superintendent of Police RN Dash said today.
A joint party of BSF (Border Security Force) and district force was on a combing exercise in Siksod region, located around 200 kms away from the state capital, when they got a tip-off about the movement of a man with suspicious motives near Bilaikachhar.

Maruti Suzuki sales up 33.5 percent in June

India’s largest passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki Thursday reported a healthy sales growth of 33.5 percent in total sales, including exports, for June at 112,773 units.

The company sold 84,455 units in June 2013.

The company’s domestic sales zoomed by 31.1 percent to 100,964 units during the month under review as compared to 77,002 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.

Maruti Suzuki exported 11,809 units last month, which was an increase of 58.4 percent from 7,453 units sold overseas during the corresponding month of 2013.

Hyundai Motor’s June sales down 7.6 percent

Automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motor India Tuesday reported a fall of 7.6 percent in its sales for June at 50,518 units from 54,665 units in the corresponding month of last year.

However, the company said its domestic sales during the month under review grew by 9.5 percent and stood at 33,514 units – up from 30,610 units sold in the corresponding month of 2013.

The company’s exports last month crashed by 29.3 percent at 17,004 units – down from 24,055 units shipped out during the corresponding month of last year.

Ukraine discontinues ceasefire with pro-Russian militants

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has finally announced that the ceasefire with pro-Russian militants in Eastern Ukraine has ended and the government will make attempts to free their land.

Poroshenko said the hope for peace between the two sides has been lost due to increasing rebellion activities and the decision to end ceasefire is Ukraine’s answer to Russian terrorists and rebels.

Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for violating the peace accord, reports BBC.

Brinda Karat calls for Pal’s suspension

Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday said TMC leader Tapas Pal should be suspended for his derogatory comments about sending his men to the homes of her party leaders to rape their women.

“To condemn his actions, there are no words. An FIR should be lodged against him and strict action should be taken. He should be suspended,” said Karat.

Women rights activists Kavita Krishnan said that Pal was instigation sexual violence.

“He is clearly instigating sexual violence against women, he should be arrested for this,” said Krishnan.

Nissan Motor logs 48 percent sales growth

The Indian subsidiary of Japanese automobile firm Nissan Motor Company last month recorded a 48 percent growth in sales over the like period of last year, the company said Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, Nissan Motor India said it sold 4,362 vehicles last month up from 2,949 units sold in June 2013.

According to the company, its Datsun Go model contributed 1,097 units to the total sales. The company also sells Micra another small car.

A new study has revealed that malaria parasites alter the chemical odor signal of their hosts to attract mosquitoes and better spread their offspring.

According to researchers, malaria-infected mice are more attractive to mosquitoes than uninfected mice and they are the most attractive to these mosquito vectors when the disease is most transmissible.

Mosquitoes ingest the parasite with a blood meal, and the parasite creates the next generation in the mosquito’s gut and these nascent parasites travel to the vector’s salivary glands and are passed to the host during the next meal.

Chinese man hospitalised with 100-kg tumour

Doctors in a hospital here are preparing to remove a tumour weighing more than 100 kg from the waist of a patient who has lived with it since childhood, media reported.

Yang Jianbin, who is in his 30s, was given two hospital beds at the PLA’s Hospital 304 to accommodate his 1.2-metre-long tumour, which currently makes up nearly two-thirds of his total body weight, a Global Times report Monday said.

Non-subsidised LPG hiked by Rs.16.50 a cylinder

Along with the hike in petrol and diesel rates, the price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was Tuesday raised by Rs.16.50 per cylinder in the wake of international crude oil prices surging due to the ongoing Iraq crisis.

With this first hike in six months, each non-subsidised 14.2-kg cooking gas cylinder which customers buy after consuming their current quota of 12 cylinders will now cost Rs.922.50 in Delhi, up from Rs.906, state-run Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said.

Allowing for local taxes, the price per cylinder is now Rs.966 in Kolkata, Rs.949.50 in Mumbai and Rs.924 in Chennai.

Railway loco pilot arrested for molesting woman

A railway loco pilot was arrested on Tuesday on charges of molesting a woman in a running train in Bihar, police said.

Manoj Pandey, who was travelling in the Mahananda Express, was arrested by the Government Railway Police on charges of molesting a woman passenger near Mokama railway station in Patna district.

“Manoj was arrested following a complaint lodged by a woman that he molested her,” said a police official.

Manoj Pandey told police that he is a railway loco pilot, posted at New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.

Police have begun investigation into the case.

Coffee table book on President to be released on Wednesday

President Pranab Mukherjee will receive the first copy of a coffee table book, “First Citizen: Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhavan” Wednesday, an official release said on Tuesday.

Congress leader Karan Singh will release the book in the presence of the President and Philip Mathew, The Week magazine’s managing editor at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The book, published by The Week magazine, is a compilation of articles that have appeared in The Week under the title “First Citizen” from January 2013 to May 2014.
