Italian tourist robbed of passport, cash in Rajasthan

An Italian tourist was allegedly robbed of her handbag containing her passport, Rs 10,000 and 300 euros in cash on board a Rajasthan government-run bus, police said here Tuesday.

The tourist, Sayana Pontogolio, had boarded the bus at Barmer on Sunday night. Yesterday morning when she was about to get down at Sindhi Camp Bus terminal here, she found her handbag missing.

An FIR under Section 379 (theft) of the IPC has been registered at Sindhi Camp bus stand police station and a probe is on into the matter, Station House Officer Manoj Sharma said.

Over 150 complaints from spinster women have been received by the State Mahila Commission till June. The complaints allege that they have been cheated by their partners pertaining to pre-marital sex.

A number of qualified women, within the age group of 20-29 years, working for reputed organization and being monetarily independent, have been approaching the Commission seeking justice.

It is interesting to know that a majority of them want to get back with their partners who had cheated them.

Senior JD(U) leader and former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Tuesday said he was not surprised at rise in prices of petrol and diesel besides, soaring rates of food items under Narendra Modi government which could not deliver on tall promises made so far.

“I am not surprised. The rise in petrol and diesel prices along with soaring food prices have come as surprise to those who harboured expectations from the new government which had made tall promises of ‘Achhe din’ (good days) on election eve,” Kumar told reporters emerging from the Legislative Council.

Beware of plastic food packets

While getting our food parceled in plastic packets, the truth which we fail to notice is that the individual who packs the food blows air into the small plastic packets to open them, the bacteria from his mouth get deposited in the packet.

National Agro Foundation, a Chennai-based voluntary research organization conducted a test recently, reveals that colonies of bacteria were found in the food packets after air is blown into it. They have asked the restaurants not to permit their staff to blow air to open plastic packets and also make sure that their staff cleans their mouth properly.

A 22- year, Rahul Kumar, old ITI diploma holder by professional, paid with his life for meeting his girlfriend at her house in Patna district.

Rahul, on early morning of Saturday, was pitilessly beaten with iron rods, unsighted by the girl’s family before being shot five times on his legs and bludgeoned on his head.

Rahul, the victim had gone to the girl’s house at Daulatpur village to meet her since he was to leave by train for Hardwar in Uttarakhand to join his work there. A family member unfortunately saw Rahul entering the girl’s room in the morning.

US sending 300 more US troops to Iraq

The US is sending another 300 troops to Iraq to beef up security at the US Embassy and elsewhere in the Baghdad area to protect US citizens and property, officials have said.

That raises the total US troop presence in Iraq to approximately 750, the Pentagon said yesterday.

Bomb scare: no explosive material found in Delhi-bound plane

A reported bomb threat on a Delhi-bound Air India plane from Kochi, with 164 people on board, which landed under emergency conditions at the airport here, was a hoax, police said today.

The Airbus 320 (flight AI-047) was searched “thoroughly” after its emergency landing late last night and no bomb or explosive material was detected, Bangalore Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Kamal Pant told PTI.

New Zealand’s disgraced batsman Lou Vincent was today banned for life by the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Champions League Twenty20 within hours of publicly confessing his role in match-fixing and offering “deepest apologies” for shaming the game and his country.

Wal-Mart starts virtual wholesale stores in Hyderabad, Lucknow

Wal-Mart India today launched its online wholesale platform in the country, offering the service in Hyderabad and Lucknow.

The e-commerce platform will provide the same range of products as its wholesale stores, as well as special items for members, the company said in a statement.

“This initiative is aimed at enhancing our members’ shopping experience by integrating physical and digital store presence,” Wal-Mart India President and Chief Executive Officer Krish Iyer said.

Arms dump recovered in Telangana

An arms dump of the banned CPI(Maoist) was unearthed on a hilly area in Bellampalli region in Adilabad district of Telangana, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team was sent to the area and during combing operation near Bimrelly village the dump consisting of four tiffin boxes containing explosives, two hand-grenades, several rounds of ammunition of different caliber, books containing Maoist literature among others were recovered, Bellampalli DSP K Easwar Rao said.

“The dump has been found in a plastic container,” the official said adding further investigations were on.

Even low lead exposure harms kids

Young children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of lead and even low exposure to it can give rise to emotional and behavioural problems, says a study.

As blood lead levels increase in children, so do the problems, the study added.

“This research focused on lower blood lead levels than most other studies and adds more evidence that there is no safe lead level,” said Kimberly Gray, from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the US.

“It is well-documented that lead exposure lowers the IQ of children,” Gray added.

Two elephants mowed down by train in Bengal

Two elephants were mowed down Tuesday by a speeding train in Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, an official said.

The accident happened when a Guwahati-bound train hit the tuskers while they were crossing the tracks.

“Two elephants have been killed when they were hit by a speeding train. The incident happened under the Buxa Tiger Reserve,” principal chief conservator of forests N.C. Bahuguna said.

Delhi: Two head constables sentenced to 3-year jail in graft case

Two Delhi Police head constables have been sentenced to three years in jail by a Delhi court for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 100 each from bootleggers for permitting them to sell liquor illegally.

Special CBI Judge L K Gaur awarded the jail term to Haryana’s Jhajjar resident Ram Kumar and Jind’s resident Ram Kumar. The two were suspended in 2004 in connection with the inquiry ordered into a video tapes showing policemen taking bribe from bootleggers.

LDF opposition led by CPI-M members in Kerala on Tuesday staged a walkout in the Assembly over refusal to admit an adjournment motion regarding the murder of a DYFI activist allegedly by BJP workers at Pannathadi panchayat in Kasargod district.

Replying to the notice for the motion moved by James Mathew (CPI-M), Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala made it clear that the murder of activist Abdul Sherif was not political and it was a result of a “local dispute”. Sherif was stabbed on June 26 and died at a hospital next day, he said.

Rosetta’s comet releasing two glasses of water per second in space

Rosetta’s comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is releasing the equivalent of two small glasses of water into space every second, even at a cold 583 million kilometres from the Sun.

Sam Gulkis, the instrument’s principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, USA said that they always knew that they would see water vapour out gassing from the comet, but they were surprised at how early they detected it.

The first observations of water vapour streaming from the comet were made by the Microwave Instrument for Rosetta Orbiter, or MIRO.

Floods displace over 250,000 in Paraguay, Brazil

Floods have displaced over 250,000 people from their homes in Paraguay and Brazil, a media report said Tuesday.

In Paraguay, Unicef said that 200,000 people were displaced after heavy rains triggered river floods, Xinhua reported.

According to the UN body, the total number of families displaced was estimated at about 40,000.

Officials have said that Unicef has been working with other aid agencies to ensure basic needs for homeless people, especially children.

Floods have hit nine of Paraguay’s 17 provinces, with the capital the hardest hit by the swollen Paraguay River.
