Student raped by her classmate’s father

A 12-year-old girl student was allegedly raped by father of her classmate today at Attur near here, police said.

The seventh standard student went to her classmate’s house this morning as they go to school together daily. When the girl reached the house, her classmate’s father took her to an isolated place and raped her, Attur All Women Police Inspector Kannan said.

The girl returned her house and narrated about the incident to her parents, who lodged a complaint to police.

Sacked Saudi deputy defence minister named spy chief

Saudi King Abdullah has appointed a new spy chief, giving the job to the former deputy defence minister days after sacking him from that post.

Prince Khaled bin Bandar bin Abdul Aziz had been unexpectedly removed from his post on Saturday at the request of his boss the defence minister, after only 45 days on the job.

There was no reason for his sacking but today the state-run news agency SPA reported that Prince Khaled had been appointed “head of the General Intelligence with a minister rank” by royal decree.

Rajnath asks home secy to stop infighting between AP, Telangana

Concerned over reports of infighting between the administrations of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today directed the Union Home Secretary to mediate between the two states and resolve the issues.

The Home Minister’s intervention follows reports that the two states were allegedly fighting over a host of issues, including drinking and irrigation water, power supply and municipal affairs, official sources said.

Medicos in gandhi hospital continue strike

The lightning strike launched by junior doctors in Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad entered the second day on Tuesday. With the medicos abstained from duties, the patients were facing hardships since Monday.

While services to the out-patients remained stopped, tension prevailed in the hospital due to heated arguments between the in-patients and the striking medicos. The hospital authorities’ efforts to pacify the junior doctors ended in vain. With this, the hospital services remained paralysed for the last two days causing untold hardship to the patients.

Babli sluice gates reopened after eight months

The sluice gates of the controversial Babli project in Maharashtra were reopened on Tuesday after eight months.

When the Maharashtra government constructed the Babli project unilaterally, the united Andhra Pradesh government had approached the Supreme Court to stop construction of the project. After hearing the AP plea, the court passed orders directing the Maharashtra government to shut the sluice gates of the project from October 29 to June 30 every year and reopen the gates on July 1 till October 28 in order to ensure that there was no hindrance to the flow of river water.

Cement companies lower price in Himachal

Three cement companies having plants in Himachal Pradesh Tuesday agreed to reduce the price of cement from Rs.15 to Rs.35 per bag in the state, an official said.

“Ambuja, ACC and Jaypee have agreed in principle to reduce the price with immediate effect,” a government spokesperson told IANS.

He said a decision in this regard was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh where company functionaries were also present.

Now subregional cooperation: India to host partners this month

Moscow “deeply regrets” Kiev’s decision to call off ceasefire in Ukraine’s eastern regions, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The decision has undermined “important joint diplomatic actions” of Russia, Germany and France over the Ukrainian crisis, Moscow said following a phone conversation between foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France late Monday, Xinhua reported.

“There is an impression that the changing of Kiev’s position happened in contradiction with the position of the European Union’s leading members,” the statement said.

President Pranab Mukherjee today called for urgent steps to develop the textiles sector, saying its products are vulnerable to competition from cheaper imports and machine-made substitutes.

He said there should be “concerted and collective” steps to safeguard the interests of the handloom & handicrafts sector, including facilitation of easier access to credit.

Besides, he said, promotion of handloom and handicraft products in domestic and foreign markets and research for developing innovative technology will help the sector.

‘Sacrifice’ intruders, says Trinamool leader, justified call

Trinamool Congress leader Arup Chakraborty has been caught on tape asking partymen to “sacrifice intruders”. He Tuesday justified his remark, saying he was talking about the right of self-defence.

Telecast by a Bengali news channel, a video clip shows Chakraborty, head of the party unit in West Bengal’s Bankura district, asking his partymen to “sacrifice whoever intrudes your homes”.

“If any outsider enters your house, cut him down, sacrifice him, I will take care of that, you don’t have to worry,” Chakraborty is seen telling his party activists in Bankura.

Assault on Indian storekeeper in Bahrain to be probed

Police in Bahrain have launched a probe into the incident of stabbing and robbing of an Indian man by a group of assailants on a busy road, media reported Tuesday.

Riyas Povval, 28, was injured in an attack by a gang of eight men Sunday night who raided the mobile shop he worked in the busy Hoora area of Manama, Gulf Daily News reported.

The assailants managed to flee with cash and several mobile phones.

The victim told the newspaper that he suffered stab wounds in his stomach and a broken finger.

Goa woman’s assault: Police issued notice for FIR delay

Several senior police officers of Goa were issued notice Tuesday by the state Human Rights Commission for ignoring the complaint of a woman who claimed three people beat her up and put chilli powder into her private parts.

The notice directed Director General of Police T.N. Mohan, Superintendent of Police Priyanka Kashyap and police inspector Tushar Vernekar to submit a written reply by August 4, as to why the police failed to register a first information report (FIR) for days after the woman filed her assault complaint.
