Theatre actor Aahana Kumra, who will be seen as Amitabh Bachchan`s onscreen daughter in TV show “Yudh”, says working with the megastar has been like going on a pilgrimage.

Aahana has earlier worked in films like Anup Kurian’s “The Blueberry Hunt” and Makarand Deshpande’s “Sona Spa”. With “Yudh”, she is making her debut on television.

Former team mate says ‘aloof’ Vincent easy target for match fixers

Former team-mate Iain O’Brien has said banned former New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent was an easy target for match fixers because of his aloof behaviour and feeling of self-doubt.

The BBC quoted O’Brien, as saying Vincent was aloof and suffered some “dark days” around the team, which made him quite an easy target for bookies.

O’Brien was speaking a day after the International Cricket Council (ICC) endorsed moves by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and others to impose a life ban on Vincent for breaching 18 anti-corruption rules in matches played in 2008 and 2011.

De Villiers says Kohli among best bats in world, wants one drop Proteas spot

South African batsman AB de Villiers has described India’s Virat Kohli as among the top three batsmen in international cricket, and expressed a desire to bat at No 3 in all formats for the Proteas.

Currently the world’s No 1-ranked batsman in Test and One-Day International cricket, De Villiers was quoted by Sport 24, as telling the Beeld website that while he was not sure about being the world’s best batsman, he would like to test himself batting at No. 3 in all three formats of the game.

Coffee table book on President to be released today

President Pranab Mukherjee will on Wednesday receive the first copy of a coffee table book, “First Citizen: Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhavan”.

Congress leader Karan Singh will release the book in the presence of the President and Philip Mathew, The Week magazine’s managing editor, at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The book has been published by The Week magazine.

It is a compilation of articles that have appeared in The Week under the title “First Citizen” from January 2013 to May 2014.

Building collapse toll rises to 32; 3 more survivors rescued

The toll in the multi-storeyed building collapse here rose to 32 while three lucky survivors were rescued today nearly 70 hours after they were trapped under the debris.

“The toll had reached 32. Three persons were rescued today, taking the total number of survivors to 26 so far,” Tamil Nadu Public Health Director K Kulandaisamy told PTI tonight.

The tragedy occurred on June 28 when the 11-storeyed under construction residential building collapsed.

The rescue personnel from multiple agencies pulled out 12 more bodies since last night, taking the toll to 32.

Man kills wife suspecting illicit relationship with friend

A woman was strangulated by her husband over her suspected illicit relationship with his friend in Gokul Puri area of north-east Delhi.

“Phoolmuni and her husband Bablu Murmur lived in a rented accommodation in the area. Bablu strangled her to death suspecting that she was having an extra-marital affair with his friend,” police said.

The incident came to light this afternoon when Phoolmuni’s landlord received no response despite making several phone calls to her.

Police said that sensing something amiss, he informed police who broke open the door and found Phoolmuni dead there.

Gujarat improved in agriculture sector: Socio-economic review

Gujarat has performed considerably well in the agriculture sector with an increase of 29.68 lakh tonne in foodgrain production in 2013-14, according to the Socio-Economic Review Report of the state for FY’14.

“As per estimates, production of foodgrains during 2013-14 is estimated at 99.90 lakh tonne compared to 70.22 lakh tonne last year,” the Socio-Economic Review Report of Gujarat state of the year 2013-14 said.

4 gold thieves on run from Indore held in Bengal, Punjab

Four persons who stole around 10 kg of gold valued at about Rs 3 crore from the local bullion market last week have been arrested in West Bengal and Punjab, police said today.

Around 760 gram of the stolen gold has been recovered from them, Satnam Singh, in-charge of police station in the bullion market, told PTI.

Among the four, one Sandeep was nabbed from West Bengal’s Midnapur district, while the others – Vishwajeet, Vishwanath and Bachu – were apprehended from Ludhiana in Punjab, he said.

Class II girl molested near school

A girl studying in class II was allegedly molested by a neighbour near her school at Arali village under Rajnagar police station in Birbhum district today, the police said.

While the girl was returning home from the village primary school, the accused Mantu Seikh allegedly took her to a nearby bush close to the school.

A teacher of the school who was coming along the same way heard the scream of the girl and rushed to the spot. Mantu fled after seeing him, the police said.

The teacher took her to her home where the girl and she told what had happened.

Minor girl raped by boyfriend in Jajpur

A minor girl was allegedly raped by her boyfriend at her house in Odisha’s Jajpur district following which the accused was arrested, police said Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Jitendra Moharana (22) of Karadapal village under Ramachandrapur police station in the neighbouring Keonjhar district, they said.

Both had come in contact a couple of months ago following a conversation during a wrong call on the cell phone. Thereafter, they entered into a relationship.

Nepal recognises controversial climb by Chinese woman

Nepal has recognised a 41-year-old Chinese woman mountaineer’s climb of Mt Everest in May despite the controversy over the use of a helicopter during the ascent.

Wang Jing, a businesswoman, scaled the 8848 metre summit, the highest peak in the world, on May 23 accompanied by five local mountain guides.

The government had earlier refused to recognise the climb as she used helicopter as part of the expedition.

Three youths have been booked for making an obscene video clip of a minor Dalit girl and blackmailing her, police said today.

One of them has been booked on rape charge also.

Lasudia Police Station in-charge Narendra Gaharwar said Suraj (20), Deepesh (21) and Ritesh (22) were booked on a complaint filed by the 17-year-old victim yesterday.

They have been charged with abduction and under relevant sections of the IT Act. Deepesh, in addition, faces sexual assault charge, he said.

HC quashes circular permitting English in lower court orders

The Madras High Court bench here today set aside a 1994 high court circular which permitted lower courts to write judgements in either English or Tamil.

A division bench, comprising Justice V.Ramasubramanian and Justice V.M.Velumani, held the circular gave the impression that presiding officers of lower courts could permanently write their judgements in English, which was illegal.

Sujit Choudhry, a noted expert in comparative constitutional law, has become the first Indian-American dean of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, a top US law school.

Born in Delhi and raised in Toronto, Choudhry, 44, who was the Cecelia Goetz Professor of Law at New York University School of Law and founder of its Centre for Constitutional Transitions, began a five-year term as Berkeley Law’s 12th dean Monday.

UN, aid agencies help 470,000 displaced people in Pakistan

The UN and other aid agencies are helping 470,000 people who have been displaced from Pakistan’s North Waziristan region due to the ongoing military operations, a media report said Wednesday.

“The displacement of these people, three-quarters of whom are women and children, was triggered by the Pakistani military’s operations against armed insurgents,” Xinhua quoted UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric as saying.

“Nearly 100,000 people have also fled to Afghanistan’s Khost province to seek shelter,” Dujarric said.

SBI opens 6 digital branches

Launching its next generation banking initiative, SBI on Tuesday opened six digital branches, which offer services like instant account opening and personalised debit cards.

State Bank of India (SBI) opened ‘sbiINTOUCH’ outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad on the occasion of its 60th Foundation Day. The Kolkata branch is opening shortly.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated the branches on Tuesday. They will work between 10am and 10pm and all the seven days in the week.

300 passengers looted on Janshatabdi Express

In yet another incident highlighting the plight of train travellers, some 30 armed dacoits looted more than 300 passengers on board the Janshatabdi express that was heading to Patna from Ranchi on Tuesday night.

More than 30 armed dacoits looted of gold worth several lakhs from passengers in the AC coaches. The incident took place between Kodarma in Jharkhand and Gaya in Bihar.

“Around 20-25 dacoits came and took away jewellery, money and whatever they could find. They even fought with some passengers. There were no police personnel on board,” said a passenger.
