CCEA may consider today stock limits on onion, potato

In order to check prices of onion and potato, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is likely to consider Wednesday a proposal to impose stock holding limits on these two commodities and curb hoarding.

Currently, stock limits are imposed for pulses, edible oils and oilseeds till September 2014, while for rice and paddy upto November this year.

“The CCEA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. A proposal to impose stock limits on storage, movement and distribution of onion and potato is on the agenda,” sources said.

Heavy rains expected to lash West Bengal

West Bengal is likely to experience heavy rainfall over the next two days, Met officials said Wednesday.

Officials at the Alipur Met Office here said most districts of the state will witness moderate to heavy rains while southern parts of Bengal will receive the maximum rain from Wednesday to Friday.

Wind will be “generally light” and Thursday night is forecast to be the wettest.

Several areas of the eastern metropolis were Tuesday night water-logged following a downpour, causing traffic snarls.

Somnath Chatterjee’s health stable

The health of former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee admitted to a private hospital after suffering a cerebral stroke was stable, a doctor said Wednesday.

“His condition is stable and it is improving. We tested him for brain infection and the results came out as negative but he is not fully conscious,” attending doctor Subir Mondal told IANS.

Chatterjee was hospitalised Sunday evening after he complained of restlessness.

This is the second time in the last six months that the 84-year-old has been hospitalised.

Union Health Minister Dr.Harsh Vardhan has sought a report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director over an AIIMS doctor’s allegations that the autopsy in Sunanda Pushkar’s death was submitted under pressure.

“I have asked the director of AIIMS, Dr M.C Mishra, to submit an official report to me regarding this matter,” said Dr Harsh Vardhan.

NASA successfully tests ‘saucer shaped’ vehicle for future mars missions

NASA has recently tested an effective saucer shaped vehicle technology that could be used for future mars missions.

The 150 million US Dollars experimental flight was designed to deliver heavier spacecraft and eventually astronauts with a novel vehicle and a giant parachute, News.com.au reported.

Since the twin Viking spacecraft landed on the red planet in 1976, NASA has relied on the same parachute design to slow landers and rovers after piercing through the thin Martian atmosphere.

UP police receives intelligence alert for Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi

The Uttar Pradesh Police has tightened security arrangements in temple towns of Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi for the upcoming holy month of Shravan after intelligence inputs of possible disturbances.

Inspector General of Police (law and order) Amrendra Sengar told reporters that the state police has received an alert from intelligence agencies for Mathura, Kashi (Varanasi) and Ayodhya during the month when fairs drawing large crowds are organised.

Bor wildlife sanctuary to become country’s 47th tiger reserve

Bor Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra will become the country’s 47th Tiger Reserve with Environment Ministry notifying it as a tiger reserve with an aim to strengthen the conservation efforts of the national animal.

Minister of State (Independent Charge), Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Chairperson of the National Tiger Conservation Authority, Prakash Javadekar has approved the recommendation on a proposal from Maharashtra for notifying the Bor Sanctuary, New Bor Sanctuary and the New Bor Extended Wildlife Sanctuary as a core/critical tiger habitat of a tiger reserve.

Govt. to give approval for holding Jalsa Yaumul Quran at Makkah Masjid shortly

The government has not yet taken any decision regarding permission of Jalsa Yaumul Quran at Makkah Masjid during Ramadanul Mubarak. The file is said to have been sent to chief minister for approval and further two days will be required for its approval.

It must be noted that permission is granted to various parties to hold Jalsa Yaumul Quran on Fridays of Ramadan. Of the 4 Fridays of Ramadan, 2 Fridays are allotted to MIM while 1 to MBT. 2nd Friday is allotted to a religious organisation of the city to hold meeting.

Swamy calls for proper investigation in Sunanda Pushkar’s death

Commenting on the allegations made in the Sunanda Pushkar’s autopsy report case, Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday reiterated that Pushkar was murdered and called for proper investigation in the case.

“I have been saying this from the beginning that she was murdered by a professional gang. There should be proper investigations in this case as there are certain new aspects which have come out and which strongly indicate that she was murdered,” Swamy told ANI.

Swamy said that Pushkar had told people that she will expose the corruption in IPL.

Eight killed, 13 wounded in suicide bomb attack in Kabul

At least eight people were killed and 13 wounded after a suicide bomb attacker triggered an explosion on a bus carrying military personnel in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday, officials said.

According to Dawn, the explosion happened in the heavily secured downtown area near Kabul University at a time of increasing attacks by the Taliban and other insurgents around Afghanistan, where the outcome of a presidential election is still not known.

HIV cases in Philippines rise by 19 percent

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) Tuesday said new cases of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rose by 19 percent in May this year.

New cases recorded in January to May numbered 2,320, nearly 23 percent higher than the 1,892 cases reported last year, Xinhua reported.

Of the new HIV cases recorded in May, DOH said 465 were infected through sexual contact while 30 were drug users who shared contaminated needles.

DOH said 140 of those who were infected were aged between 15 to 24 years of age.

Sharks thrived in Arctic’s brackish water 50m years ago: Study

A recent study has found that the Arctic Ocean was very brackish and had reduced salinity back then, indicating that Sharks thrived some 50 million years ago.

The study, carried out by University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Chicago, indicated that the Eocene Arctic sand tiger shark was thriving in the brackish water, while the modern sand tiger sharks living today are very intolerant of low salinity.

The modern sharks require three times the saltiness of the Eocene sharks in order to survive.
