9.4 million new jobs created by US in last 51 months: Obama

US President Barack Obama ignited a new power showdown with Republicans, vowing to improve the economy alone and said his administration created 9.4 million jobs in the last 51 months to “help the middle class” despite facing “obstruction”.

“We went through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, we have climbed back. Since then, we have created 9.4 million new jobs over the past 51 months,” Obama said.

“Corporate profits are up, stock market is up, housing is improving,” he said yesterday in his remarks on economy here.

Property worth lakhs of rupees gutted in fire in UP

Property worth several lakh rupees was Wednesday gutted when a double storey godown cum residential building caught fire in Guljarnagar locality here, police said today.

A huge stock of mobil oil drums, said to be owned by a trader Raju Khan, was kept in the building when the fire broke out, they said.

Khan’s family was safely moved away from the house by the firemen and local residents, they said.

Owing to the huge stock of highly inflammable mobil oil, the fire engulfed the entire building within a few minutes, police said.

Rains lash parts of Punjab and Haryana; mercury falls

Rains lashed parts of Punjab and Haryana Wednesday, bringing the mercury down considerably, with conditions for advancement of monsoon in the twin agrarian states being “favourable”.

Moderate to heavy rainfall poured in Chandigarh, Ambala and Patiala this morning, the MeT office said here.

“Monsoon has entered some parts of Punjab and Haryana and the conditions for its advancement are favourable,” Chandigarh MeT Director Surinder Pal said.

While Chandigarh received 58.8 mm of rainfall, Ambala received 41.9 mm and Patiala 0.7 mm.

High fiscal deficit, inflation main challenges for nation, says Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said high fiscal deficit and inflation were major challenges for the country.

“Fiscal deficit is a major challenge. The growth has slowed down,” Jaitley said, while addressing a gathering during an event at Institute of Charted Accountants of India here yesterday.

He said populist policies and paralysis in policymaking had slowed growth, and that an improving current account deficit position in the last few months was the only “silver lining” for the Indian economy.

Newly-wed Indian woman wins prime property in Dubai radio show

A newly-wed Indian woman, who was visiting her husband in Dubai, has won a prime property in her home state in a competition run by a radio station, according to a media report.

Sruthymol V, 24, won the property three months after her marriage, when she flew into Dubai on a visit visa.

Sruthymol, who has graduated in computer science and engineering, was selected as the winner of 2,500 sqft of prime property in her home state Kerala in a competition run by Malayalam radio station Hit 96.7 FM, the Khaleej Times said.

Hong Kong police arrest 511 after big democracy rally

Hong Kong police arrested more than 500 people who refused to leave a street in the city’s financial district on Wednesday, a day after tens of thousands of people joined a massive march to push for democracy, free from China’s interference.

The march is an annual affair to mark the anniversary of the day China took over Hong Kong from Britain on June 1, 1997 with the promise to give the city a high degree of autonomy for 50 years.

Contrary to the popular belief that fish have a memory span of only 30 seconds, scientists have found that a popular aquarium species can remember the location of tasty treats up to 12 days later.

Researchers at MacEwan University in Canada studied African Cichlids (Labidochromis caeruleus).

These fish demonstrate many complex behaviours, including aggression, causing the scientists to predict that they could be capable of advanced memory tasks.

Vovlo bus overturns injuring 3

A Volvo bus belonging to a private tourist operator turned turtle on NH 44 near Kashepalli village of Peddavaduguru mandal in Anantapur district on Tuesday. 3 persons sustained injuries in this accident.

TRS MPTC members were said to be occupying the bus, who were on their way to Bengaluru from Hyderabad on a pleasure trip. The victims have been rushed to a hospital in Gutti.

A two-day national conference held to review monsoon preparedness has concluded that the Pakistan Commission for Indus Water will take up the dam water release issue with India.

Major General Muhammad Saeed Aleem, the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said Pakistan has suffered a huge loss due to the sudden release of dam water by India, though, India had been compelled under the Indus Water Treaty to inform Pakistan before taking such moves.

(Siasat News): A man was brutally murdered at Amberpet. The deceased was a 35-year-old unidentified man who was killed by unknown assailants who crushed his head with a heavy boulder.

Researchers of the American Heart Association assessed 13,284 young and healthy Spanish university graduates to determine the association between three types of sedentary behaviour and risk of death from all causes: television viewing time, computer accessing and driving time, Xinhua reported.

Half of US can’t live a day without smartphones

If your kid cannot get away from smartphone even while having dinner or watching TV, he/she is not the only one. According to a new survey by Bank of America, nearly 50 percent of mobile phone users in the US cannot last a day without smartphone.

Many of the participants considered their devices to be more important than coffee and television.

Some users said they would rather give up alcohol or chocolate than their phones, according to a report in TG Daily.

The survey also found smartphones were more important to their users than toothbrushes or deodorants.

Light showers in Delhi bring relief from soaring mercury

Some parts of the city received scanty rainfall overnight, leading to a drop in temperature.

According to MeT department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.5 degree Celsius which was two notches below normal for this part of the season.

“The rain, however, was very scarce. The rain gauge has measured only traces of it,” said a MeT official.

The overnight rain, however, is bound to push humidity levels even though the maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degree Celsius.

Humidity was recorded at 70 per cent at 8:30 AM.

Boy shot dead in UP

A 15-year-old boy was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Mahewaghat area, a senior police officer said here Wednesday.

Lalji Prajapati was shot dead by motorcycle-borne persons near Kumiyawan Bazar last evening, Superintendent of Police R P Singh said.

Agitated with the incident, locals placed the body on the road and blocked it. They later lifted the blockade.

Woman beaten to death by husband, in-laws for dowry in UP

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and in-laws after she failed to fulfil their dowry demands, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place yesterday at Khatoli town in the district, they said.

Ayesha got married to Irshad in Khatoli on May 30, 2010. Later, a dispute over dowry was raised in the family, they said.

The victim’s father lodged an FIR and alleged that his daughter was beaten to death when she failed to fulfil the dowry demands, D K Mittal, Circle Officer Khatoli said.

Delhi Government to Open Stalls to Sell Onions and Potatoes

Delhi government will open stalls in various government premises to sell onions and potatoes on wholesale prices to the people.

Sale at 40 such premises will start from tomorrow and the number of premises will be increased to 200 in the next two weeks.

The government premises from where the sale is proposed include the offices of Food and Supply Officers, various offices of Development Department, office of District Magistrates, SDMs, Inquiry offices of Delhi Jal Board, said Development Commissioner, Puneet Goel.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley wanted to become a chartered accountant in his younger days, but ended up choosing the legal profession as “CA exam was too difficult to pass”.

Going down the memory lane while addressing a function of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here, he said, “I started out with a hidden desire of becoming a CA.
I strayed into other activities and then preferred Law because at that time also the CA exam was difficult.”

“That (CA) exam was difficult to pass… law was a difficult exam to fail,” he quipped.

Gold prices rose 0.47 per cent to Rs 27,980 per 10 gram at the futures trade today as speculators created fresh positions taking positive cues from overseas market.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in far-month October traded higher by Rs 131 or 0.47 per cent at Rs 27,980 per 10 gram with a business turnover of 8 lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in August moved up by Rs 120 or 0.43 per cent to Rs 27,896 per 10 gram with a trade volume of 179 lots.

Death toll in Chennai building collapse climbs to 42

The death toll in the collapse of an under-construction 11 storeyed building near suburban Porur climbed to 42 today, a senior state Government official said.

Of the 42 deceased persons, 28 were men and the rest women, Director of Public Health K Kulandaisamy said.

About 69 persons had been pulled out dead or alive from under the debris of the collapsed structure by rescue personnel since Saturday when the mishap occurred, he said.

Samsung launches flaghip ‘Tab S’ in India

Korean electronics giant Samsung today launched its new tablet ‘Tab S’ for Rs 37,800 onwards, to further strengthen its position in the Indian market.

The device will be available in two screen sizes – 8.4 inch and 10.5 inch – priced at Rs 37,800 and Rs 44,800.

“Reports suggest that about 290 million tablets will be sold this year globally. Syndicated reports show that in India too, the market is expected to grow over 20 per cent year-on- year and we are confident of topping that growth,” Samsung India VP Mobile and IT Asim Warsi told reporters here.

Three killed, 1 injured in road accident in Thane

Three persons were killed while another person sustained grievous injuries when their car rammed into a container near Kasheli bridge here early Wednesday morning, police said.

The speeding car rammed into the rear of the container around 4 AM close to the Kharegon toll plaza in the city.

“The local firemen and the disaster team rushed and tried to save those trapped in the car, but three of them had already died,” PSI V G Gavit of Narpoli Police Station said.
