Shah Jahan’s summer palace unearthed

Excavations carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) recently discovered remains of a summer palace that has been reportedly found at the centuries old Mughal-era garden Mehtab Bagh located opposite the Taj Mahal.

The garden was seems to be Shah Jahan’s favourite spot which he used to frequent to get a view of the Taj Mahal at night, that’s why its name (Mehtab means moonlight in Urdu).

Study shows 50 pc American adults suffer from one chronic condition

A new study has revealed that half of all adults in the USA suffer from at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, or obesity, and over a quarter of adults have two or more.

According to the study, the majority of these chronic conditions stem from a small number of risk factors that are largely preventable, including tobacco use, poor diet, and physical inactivity (both strongly associated with obesity), alcohol consumption, and uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Congress workers protest against BJP for not curbing inflation

Congress workers protested on Wednesday against the BJP-led NDA government for not being able to curb the rising inflation in the country.

They shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, criticizing them for not being able to deal with the water and electricity crisis in the capital.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had called upon state governments to check hoarding, while Prime Minister Modi had met ministers and senior bureaucrats to discuss strategies to control inflation, which is at a five month high.

BJP alleges Congress conspiracy for Price rise

With the Narendra Modi government facing criticism over rising prices of onion and other essential commodities, BJP has come out in defence of the Cabinet, claiming that Congress-backed middlemen are falsely inflating prices.

“The price of onions from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan veers between Rs.10-22, we suspect the rise is due to a few middlemen considered close to Congress, who are artificially raising prices,” said BJP’s national media convenor Shrikant Sharma.

New hope for malaria treatment

Researchers have developed a compound that blocks the action of a key ‘ gatekeeper’ enzyme essential for malaria parasite survival.

The researchers have revealed that the compound, called WEHI-916, is the first step toward a new class of antimalarial drugs that could cure and prevent malaria infections caused by all species of the parasite, including those resistant to existing drugs.

Scientists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute developed WEHI-916 to block the critical malaria enzyme Plasmepsin V.

Ricciardo says surprised he has outperformed Vettel in 2014-15 season

Daniel Ricciardo has said that he is surprised to have outperformed four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in the 2014-15 F1 championship season so far.

Twenty-five-year-old Australian racer Ricciardo is currently holding the third position in driver’s leader board list, and is 23 point ahead of incumbent world champion Vettel.

Ricciardo added that he came into the season knowing what he had around himself, but never thought he would surpass Vettel in the championship, that too with a 6-2 lead in qualifying, reports the BBC.

Women as well as children are the most unsafe in the state of UP under the rule of Akhilesh Yadav, according to a report, released by the Union Home Ministry.

The report, `Crime In India 2013′ released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says incidents of rape in UP in 2013 risen by over a whopping 50% compared to 2012.

Walmart to slash iPhone 5S and 5C prices

Walmart is reportedly planning to cut down Apple iPhone 5S and 5C prices to 99 dollars and 29 dollars respectively following a two-year contract.

These are the prices for the 16GB version of the iPhone 5S and 5C. Prices for the 32GB version are expected to be lowered as well.

However, the announcement about the 32GB version has not been made public yet.

Walmart is also expected to lower the prices of the fifth-gen iPod Touch 16GB to $195.

Snooping row: India summons top US diplomat

Reacting strongly to reports of BJP being spied upon by US National Security Agency (NSA), India today summoned a top US diplomat here to raise the issue, saying it was “totally unacceptable” that an Indian organisation or Indian individual’s privacy was transgressed upon.

India also sought an assurance from the US that it will not happen again. However, officials did not say who was the US diplomat summoned by the External Affairs Ministry.

New smartphone app to boost mental health treatment

Scientists have developed a new smartphone app that detects changes in patients’ behavioural patterns, and then sends the data to doctors in real time.

The system has the potential to greatly improve the response time and efficacy of clinical psychiatrists, researchers said.

Mental illness accounts for 90 per cent of all reported suicides and places the largest burden of any disease on social and economic infrastructures worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation.

Jayalalithaa hopes for higher water level at Mullaperiyar

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa Wednesday expressed hope that the Mullaperiyar Dam supervisory committee will restore the dam’s water storage level to 142 feet during the current monsoon period.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday, text of which was released to the media, Jayalaltihaa thanked Modi for constituting the supervisory committee to implement the order of the apex court for increasing the water storage level at Mullaperiyar Dam to 142 feet.

She said the state government has received the Centre’s order constituting the supervisory committee.

US daily blames ‘sand mafia’ for Beas tragedy

Less than a month after 24 students of an engineering college from Hyderabad were swept away in Himachal Pradesh’s Beas river, a US daily Wednesday blamed the “sand mafia” for the tragedy.

“Millions of Indians have gazed in horror at videos showing 24 cheerful engineering students wading in a tranquil stretch of the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh last month and then being swept to their deaths as the waters around them surged,” the New York Times said in editorial “Erosion of Trust in India”.

Monsoon finally lashes Mumbai, Maharashtra

Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and large parts of coastal and western Maharashtra on Wednesday, providing welcome relief from the extended summer here.

Though delayed by over three weeks – the normal date for onset of monsoon is June 10 – the steady downpour resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas and created disruptions in road and rail traffic within the city and outside.

Traffic came to a halt or crawled at some sections on the SV Road in the western suburbs and LBS Marg in the eastern suburbs. Suburban trains on Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour Line ran into delays.

Madras High Court quashes circular permitting English in lower court orders

The Madras High Court bench here on Tuesday set aside a 1994 high court circular which permitted lower courts to write judgements in either English or Tamil.

A division bench, comprising Justice V.Ramasubramanian and Justice V.M.Velumani, held the circular gave the impression that presiding officers of lower courts could permanently write their judgements in English, which was illegal.
