Former union minister Shashi Tharoor Wednesday requested the authorities to conduct a “thorough investigation” into the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar and to conclude the inquiry “rapidly and transparently”.

Tharoor’s statement came as the central government Wednesday sought a detailed report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on the allegation by a forensic doctor that he was pressurised to manipulate the report of Pushkar’s autopsy.

The NHRC has issued notice to Tamil Nadu asking for a report on the June 28 Chennai building collapse in which 30 people were killed, a statement said Wednesday.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the state chief secretary and sought the report within two weeks.

Citing media reports, the commission said the Tamil Nadu chief minister had said the building collapsed due to constructional defects and the builder had violated various norms.

Israel Wednesday destroyed the house of the family of Ziad Awad, who was charged by a military court with committing the murder of an off-duty Israeli policeman, the Israeli army said.

The Israeli Defence Forces spokesperson’s unit said that the demolition was aimed to serve as a deterrent, Xinhua reported.

At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to run “bullet trains”, more than 1,100 railway crossings in the East Central Railway (ECR) are still unmanned, officials said Wednesday.

Thousands of people and hundreds of vehicles cross unmanned level crossings every day in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act (section 131) and risk their lives.

“There are 1,127 unmanned railway crossings in the five divisions of the ECR in Bihar and Jharkhand. This is a matter of serious concern for us,” Madhuresh Kumar, general manager of ECR headquartered in Hajipur near Patna, said.

Once again united Andhra Pradesh is in news. This time also for the wrong reasons as the state recorded the maximum number of crimes committed against women in the previous year 2013.

The latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Tuesday shows, the undivided state was second in position next to Maharashtra in cyber crimes where once again most of the victims were women.

The special CBI court today adjourned the hearing in the discharge application of BJP leader Amit Shah, in connection with the alleged fake encounter cases of Shorabbuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati, till July 14.

The new judge B H Loya, before whom the case came up for hearing today, adjourned the case.

Meanwhile, Shah is likely to appear before the court on July 4 for the regular hearing.

It can be noted that the previous judge J T Utpat was transferred to Pune on June 25.

With a senior AIIMS forensic doctor reportedly alleging that he was pressurised to manipulate the autopsy report of Sunanda Pushkar, Delhi Police today said it will “examine” him and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor if needed.

“Whatever will happen in this case in the future I can’t tell you right now but want you to know that investigation in the case is going on. Whatever is necessary is being done. If it will be necessary to examine Dr Gupta, he will be,” said Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi.

Former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri feels that the Indian team would do well to attack home team skipper Alastair Cook, who is under immense pressure after a prolonged bad patch, during the upcoming five Test series against England, starting July 9.

England enter the Test series against India on the back of a 0-1 loss to Sri Lanka with Cook not having scored a Test hundred in the last 24 innings, and Shastri said that the visiting team must prevent the English skipper, who averages 55.26 against India, from gaining a foothold in the series.
