Eight killed in Afghanistan suicide attack

A suicide bomber targeted a bus of Afghan armed forces in the fortified capital city Kabul, leaving at least eight people dead and over a dozen others injured Wednesday.

Defence ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi confirmed the incident, saying eight personnel of the national army lost their lives in the attack and 13 others sustained injuries, according to Xinhua.

The ill-fated bus, according to eyewitnesses at the site of the blast, belonged to the air force of the militancy-plagued country.

End of road for drug-resistant malaria?

Malarial parasites resistant to existing drugs may have a difficult time soon, as researchers have now developed a compound that blocks the action of a key ‘gatekeeper’ enzyme essential for malaria parasite survival.

The compound, called WEHI-916, is the first step toward a new class of anti-malarial drugs that could cure and prevent malaria infections caused by all species of the parasite, including those resistant to existing drugs.

Researchers developed WEHI-916 to block the critical malaria enzyme Plasmepsin V.

Crimes against women in Bengal have dipped: NCRB

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report that said incidents of crimes against women have dipped in West Bengal came as a respite for the state government facing flak over Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul’s rape remarks.

According to the NCRB report for 2013, West Bengal, which topped the list in 2012 and made headlines for a spate of rapes recently, is now placed third with 29,826 reported cases last year.

The Trinamool Congress-ruled state is behind undivided Andhra Pradesh 32,809 and Uttar Pradesh 32,546.

NASA launches first carbon-tracking satellite

NASA today successfully launched a satellite designed to track atmospheric carbon dioxide, a leading human-produced greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite is now in orbit after launching from Vandenberg Air Force Station, California, NASA said.

Liftoff was on scheduled following the replacement of a defective solenoid valve that prevented water flow into the sound suppression system that caused the scrub minutes ahead of launch yesterday.

Mexican Football Federation (FMF) officials have said that Miguel Herrera’s continuance as coach of the national team will be decided in the coming days.

Indian national acquitted of drug trafficking charge

A court in Malaysia has acquitted an Indian national of a drug trafficking charge, media reported Wednesday.

Justice Rhodzariah Bujang cleared Ramasamy Mahendran, 43, of the charge framed against him, the Borneo Post reported.

The judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case.

Ramasamy was charged with allegedly possessing 6.073 gm of ketamine.

He was arrested at the Kuching International Airport arrival hall Feb 22 last year.

Drug trafficking in Malaysia may attract up to death penalty.
