Mutual funds’ assets under management rise by 9 percent

Assets under management (AUM) of mutual funds in India rose by Rs.80,000 crore or nine percent to Rs.9.85 lakh crore in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal, industry data showed Wednesday.

The country’s 44 fund houses together had an average AUM of Rs.9.85 lakh crore during April-June quarter of 2014-15, up from Rs.9.05 lakh crore in the preceding three months, according to the latest data available with Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

However, AUM had touched a record Rs.10.11 lakh crore at the end of May.

Not sent navy to pick up stranded asylum seekers: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s military Wednesday denied sending a boat to pick up 153 asylum seekers believed to have been on board a ship stranded in Australian waters, an official said.

No boat has been sent to pick up asylum seekers, military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya told reporters, adding there are no plans to send one either.

“We have heard speculation of this and wish to state no navy vessel has been dispatched to collected asylum seekers. Moreover given the rough sea conditions, it is unlikely a boat could even reach the area,” Xinhua quoted him as saying.

India has communicated with US over spying on BJP: MEA

The Indian government has communicated with the US over reports of spying on the BJP that surfaced recently, the external affairs ministry said Wednesday.

“We have already communicated to the government of the United States. We have said that we have seen reports in the US media regarding authorisation given to entities of the US government to intrude upon the privacy of communications of the Indian government, its citizens and Indian entities,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

Home ministry to review, strengthen VIP security

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Wednesday called for reviewing and strengthening of the VIP security cover to various political leaders and other individuals sanctioned by the previous UPA government.

At a high-level meeting here, Rajnath Singh said the security arrangements should be reviewed and suitably strengthened, wherever required.

BJP prejudiced, lacks respect for judiciary: Congress

The Congress Wednesday accused the BJP of “prejudice” against former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam, and said the ruling party lacked respect for the judiciary’s independence and impartiality.

“The government action speaks nothing except prejudice,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, alluding to the hasty manner in which Subramaniam’s name was segregated from the list of four persons to be made apex court judges.

Minister invites striking medicos for talks

Health Minister Dr T Rajaiah today invited the striking junior doctors for discussions to solve their problems.

Rape comments not insensitive, but misquoted: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Wednesday said his comments in the media on women and rape were misquoted and there was no insensitivity in his comments.

No ‘wish list’ for Modi, says Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said he does not have a “wish list” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit here later this week, but will only demand the state’s right.

“I do not have a wish list. I am not going to him with a wish list. Whatever is the right of the state, we should get that and we want to have that. He is coming here for two functions related to the Central government and nothing more than that,” Omar told reporters here.

The Chief Minister said the state is not demanding more than what was its right.

Hot spell is likely to prevail in Telangana and Seemandhra regions in the next 48 hours, according to the Indian Meteorological department.
In a weather bulletin, the IMD stated dry weather conditions prevailed in the two States due to weak South West monsoon increasing the day and night temperatures. While Telangana region registered 3 to 8 degrees Celsius above the normal temperature, the Seemandhra region registered three to five degrees Celsius more than the normal temperature. With this, most parts of the two States were experiencing hot winds, it added.

BJD wins civic polls in Odisha

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Wednesday won civic body elections in two Odisha towns.

Of 15 wards in the notified area council of Titilagarh in Bolangir district, about 330 km from here, the BJD won 14, an official told IANS. The remaining one seat went to the Congress.

Similarly, the ruling party won 15 of 21 wards in the municipality at the district headquarters town of Bolangir.

The Congress won four wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Independent got one ward each.

Bolangir is the home town of state BJP president K.V. Singh Deo.

The government has taken cognizance of the reports of the US spying over the BJP and it should not happen again, the party said Wednesday.

“The government has taken cognizance of the reports, and it is unfortunate. It should not happen again,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said.

He added the former UPA government also spied on the BJP.

“We knew that the previous government maintained surveillance on BJP, but we did not know the US was doing that as well,” he said.

Sheikh Hasina says verdict on Indo-Bangla sea dispute may go in favour of Bangladesh

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she is hopeful that the verdict in the Bay of Bengal maritime boundary dispute with India will be in favour of Bangladesh.

Hasina expressed her views while speaking at the inaugural programme of National Fisheries Week 2014 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital, The Daily Star reports.

The verdict was to be announced by a Netherlands court in the maritime boundary dispute last month.
