Calcutta High Court today ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe in Tapas Pal case asking for registration of an FIR against him within 72 hours. Earlier, Tapas Pal a Member of Parliament (MP) from Bengal”s Krishnanagar, who has been advised to take complete bed rest after he complained of a sudden increase in blood pressure, had kick started a controversy when he was caught on tape exhorting party workers to kill Communist Party of India (Maoist) (CPI-M) activists even as he himself asserted he will gun down his rivals and let loose his “boys” to rape their women.

DU student attacked by two men, one nabbed

A Delhi University student is critical after being attacked by two men whose advances she had spurned, police said Monday, adding one of the attackers has been arrested.

The 22-year-old who lives in Kondli area of east Delhi received multiple cut marks after the two men attacked her Sunday with paper cutters.

One attacker, Wasim Akram, 25, was arrested from his residence in Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi Sunday while his friend and neighbour Wasim Khan is on the run.

“A case of attempt to murder has been registered against the duo,” said a police official.

AP urges MEA for steps to bring back workers stuck in Libya

Amidst spiralling violence in Libya, Andhra Pradesh government today sought the Centre’s intervention to evacuate the people from the state who are working in the North African country.

“I request that suitable instructions may be issued to the Indian Embassy to interfere and provide all necessary aid in terms of food, clothing and shelter to Andhra Pradesh migrants and also to arrange to bring them back,” AP’s Special Representative, K Rama Mohana Rao, said in a letter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Shazahn enjoyed sharing stage with mom

Actress Shazahn Padamsee sang for the first time on stage where her mother and popular singer Sharon Prabhakar also belted out few hit numbers. The “Houseful 2” actress called the experience “magical”.

The daughter of theatre personality and ad filmmaker Alyque Padamsee had made her acting debut in 2009 with “Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year”.

But now she is following her mother’s footsteps.

“What happened last night (Sunday) was truly magical! Never thought singing for the first time on stage would feel so surreal,” she tweeted Monday.

J-K Sikh council protests over Saharanpur incident

Muslims mark gloomy Eid amid MH17 crash, Gaza conflict

Muslims in Asia marked a grim Eid al-Fitr today, overshadowed by several air tragedies, including the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, and conflicts in Gaza and Pakistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai in his message for Eid, the most important festival for Muslims marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, said the Islamic world was suffering.

“Hundreds of people are being killed every day in Islamic countries,” he said, highlighting the plight of those in war-torn Gaza.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today once again rubbished reports of bugging devices found inside his house. “As already stated I reiterate that no devices were found at my residence anywhere,” Gadkari. Earlier he had tweeted, “Reports in a section of the media about listening devices having been found at my New Delhi residence are highly speculative.” Reportedly, listening devices were recovered on Sunday from Gadkari”s residence over which former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raised concern and had called for an investigation.

England continued to dominate proceedings in their third cricket Test against India as a 142-run partnership between Gary Ballance (156) and Ian Bell (68 batting) took the hosts to 358 for three at lunch on day two at The Rose Bowl here Monday.

Congress demands probe in Gadkari snooping issue

The Congress Monday said it suspected that there might have been snooping of union minister Nitin Gadkari and demanded an investigation into the issue.

Without targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi by name, Congress spokesperson Shakti Singh Goyal said: “The one who snooped on people in Gujarat is now in Delhi and hence incidents of snooping are now also taking place in Delhi.”

Goyal was referring to widespread media reports Sunday that said a listening device was found in Gadkari’s house.

Gadkari, however, termed the reports “highly speculative”.

Sensex down 135 points; metal stocks plunge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets plunged 135.52 points or 0.52 percent Monday as metal stocks dipped.

Most of the stocks were trading in red and selling pressure was seen in metal, oil and gas, banking and auto sectors.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,173.47 points, closed trade at 25,991.23 points, down 135.52 points or 0.52 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,126.75 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 26,181.83 points and a low of 25,900.25 points in the trade so far.

Political rivals attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after a policeman, grievously injured during a political clash, died Monday, and demanded arrest of a ruling Trinamool Congress leader who had called for attacking police.

“Assistant Sub-Inspector Amit Chakraborty today (Monday) died at a private nursing home,” Superintendent of Police (Birbhum) Alok Rajoria said. Chakraborty received fatal injuries in his abdomen after being hit by splinters while trying to prevent a clash June 3 in Dubrajpur in Birbhum district.

Indian para-discus thrower Jai Deep narrowly missed out on the bronze medal finishing fourth in the men’s F44/42 final of the Commonwealth Games here Monday.

England’s paralympian Dan Greaves won the gold with a throw of 59.21 metres, Welsh Aled Davies came in second with 46.83m to take home silver while Nigerian Richard Okigbazi clinched the bronze with 39.38m.

Jai Deep’s best throw of 38.68m came on his first attempt. However, the 24-year-old Rohtak-born could not improve on that on his next five attempts.

Bangladeshi plane catches fire at Nepal airport, passengers safe

A Bangladeshi aircraft caught fire while landing at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Monday afternoon, officials said.

Airport police said the wheels of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG702 caught fire when it touched down at the airport at around 2 p.m., Xinhua reported.

Fire fighters at TIA soon brought the minor fire under control and the passengers were evacuated.

“The aircraft has now been parked at the airport’s hangar and its scheduled return to Dhaka at 3.10 p.m. has been cancelled,” a high level source at the TIA told Xinhua.

UP government in denial mode over riots: BJP

The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit Monday lashed out at the SP government for alleging the former had a role in the communal clashes in the state.

Attacking the Samajwadi Party (SP) government for billing the communal clashes in Saharanpur as a “caste conflict”, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters the Akhilesh Yadav government had gone in a denial mode.

He said the state government is shirking away from its responsibility and blaming other parties without any proof or evidence.
