7,000 scholarships for students in technical programmes

HRD Ministry is set to sanction 7,000 scholarships for students enrolled in technical programmes.

The scholarships would be disbursed by AICTE, 5,000 of which would be sanctioned for women students, ministry officials said.

Officials said the rest 2,000 scholarships would be equally distributed among physically challenged and PhD students.

Rajnath asks Delhi to have more vans to sell onions, potatoes

In an effort to check the rise in prices of some essential commodities, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Thursday asked the Delhi government to increase the strength of mobile vans to ensure availability of onions and potatoes at reasonable prices and also sell these food items through 300 shops in government premises.

Rajnath Singh, who Thursday held a meeting with Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and senior officials of the Delhi administration, told media persons here that the Narendra Modi government would make maximum efforts to ensure that prices do not rise.

Prez’s son calls Paul’s remarks slip of tongue, draws party flak

President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee, who once courted controversy for a sexist remark, has now sprung to the defence of Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul seeking forgiveness for the latter’s rape comments but drew flak from his own Congress party.

Slamming Abhijit’s comments, state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said he will seek an explanation from the Jangipur MP.

“Tapas has written an apology letter. I feel since he has apologised and his party has pardoned him, the debate should not be dragged any further,” Abhjiit told media persons here.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika requested Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic to continue as the head coach of the national football team following their remarkable show in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Media reports suggested that Algerian Football Federation (FAF) wants Halilhodzic to continue coaching the Desert Foxes but the Bosnian is yet to make up his mind. Bouteflika has now asked FAF president Mohamed Raouraoua to make sure that Halilhodzic extends his contract, reports Xinhua.

Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had 31 air-conditioners, 15 desert coolers and 25 heaters installed at her official residence when in power, a RTI activist said Thursday citing the response to his query.

“Consumption of electricity and expenses on such a large fleet of electrical equipment can be well imagined that too at a time when ‘austerity drive’ was there in existence with shortage of electricity for commoners having been a common phenomenon,” said Right to Information (RTI)activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal.

Dortmund striker Julian Schieber has joined league rival Hertha Berlin by putting pen to paper on a four-year deal, both sides confirmed Thursday.

Berlin completed their sixth transfer for the upcoming season as Schieber joined the “Blue-Whites” until June 2018, reports EFE.

“We observed Julian Schieber’s career with interest for a long time. He fits perfectly into our requirement profile. We are glad that he opted for Hertha,” Berlin’s sporting manager Michael Preetz said in an official statement.

A Delhi court has said “several unscrupulous auto and cab drivers” harass and lure flyers at the airport. The court’s observation came while convicting an auto-rickshaw driver for acting as a tout and luring passengers at the domestic airport here.

“It is in knowledge of everyone that in airport outside arrival hall several unscrupulous TSR and cab drivers lure passengers to cheap hotel, low fare and other benefits.

“Most of the cases TSRs do not have registration with the pre-paid taxi booth,” said Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma.

Modi to visit Kashmir Valley amid shutdown

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the Kashmir Valley Friday amid a shutdown called by separatists and warnings by Muslim groups not to create a separate enclave for Kashmiri Pandits.

Modi will chair a high-level security review meeting at the Badami Bagh headquarters of the army’s 15th corps here. He is also to inaugurate a 240 MW hydro-power in the border town of Uri in Baramulla district.

He will earlier fly to Jammu to open a 25-km rail link between Katra and Udhampur, providing a direct link to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple with the rest of the country.

The presidents of China and South Korea Thursday reaffirmed their opposition to North Korean nuclear tests at a historic meeting in Seoul which highlighted the growing isolation of the Pyongyang Communist regime.

No barricade between two Secretariats: Guv

The Raj Bhavan on Thursday dismissed the reports that appeared in a section of the media stating that a decision has been taken by Governor ESL Narasimhan during President’s rule, that a barricade be constructed between two Secretariats of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

In a press communique, the Raj Bhavan has denied the statement and said “No such decision was taken nor any instructions were issued by the Governor during President’s rule.” (INN)

Kashmir is ‘disputed territory’: Pakistan

Needling India ahead of Narendra Modi’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir as Prime Minister, Pakistan today harped on Kashmir being a “disputed territory”.

“We do not accept the so-called accession of the State of Jammu and Kashmir to India. Kashmir is not an integral part of India. Our position is that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam Khan said during a briefing.

Her remarks came on the eve of Modi’s one-day visit to Jammu and Srinagar.

Israel sends more troops to quell Hamas rocket attacks

The Israeli military deployed reinforcements to the southern border with the Gaza Strip Thursday amid a sharp spike in Gaza rocket attacks and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, the Israeli army said in a statement.

An undisclosed number of armoured units ceased headed south to augment the army’s Gaza Division in preparation for a possible large-scale operation to quell rocket fire, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

A small number of reservists assigned to headquarters were called up as well, and Palestinian media reported that navy vessels were taking up positions off the Gaza coast.

Court extends Jessica Lal murderer Manu Sharma’s parole

The Delhi High Court Thursday extended for one month the parole to Manu Sharma, serving a life term in the Jessica Lal murder case, so that he could prepare and submit his masters’ thesis.

Justice S. Muralidhar, extending Sharma’s parole, asked him to surrender on Aug 2.

Sharma was earlier granted 15 days’ parole to sit for his exams which were scheduled to commence from June 19 and to end on June 24.

He has been pursuing his post-graduate examination in human rights.
