President greets nation on Eid

President Pranab Mukherjee Monday extended his greetings to fellow citizens on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, which will be celebrated Tuesday.

“On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend warm greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens, particularly to my Muslim brothers and sisters in India and abroad,” Mukherjee said in a statement.

“As we celebrate this day which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, I hope that the festival with its tradition of giving and sharing enriches our lives with a spirit of brotherhood and empathy for the deprived,” he said.

Congress fires at BJP over adverse audit report on Gujarat

Using an official audit report on Gujarat, the Congress party lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party Monday and said the adverse remarks on favours to industrialists suggested how its recent mega election campaign was funded.

The remarks came after some reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) were tabled in the state assembly last Friday, which it alleged that there was severe mismanagement of state’s finances.

The findings pertained to the time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the state’s chief minister.

No hope for RJD-JDU in Bihar: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shahnawaz Hussain today said that although the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal United have formed an alliance in Bihar, their chances of winning are nil. “The public is not going to vote for them. Lalu Yadav has used many words against Nitish Kumar in the past. He may still get a few seats, but there is no hope for Nitish,” said Hussain. “Both of them are scared of Modi. Eight people injured after communal clashes break out in Kashmir

Eight people were injured after communal clashes broke out in between two groups Phoond village of Kathua on Monday after rumors of cow slaughter spread in the area. The two groups resorted to stone pelting and many shops were set ablaze. The DC and DIG have reached the spot where the lashed broke out and section 144 has been imposed in the area. AAP activists arrested for defacing public property

Four AAP activists, who were pasting posters for an upcoming party rally here, were arrested Monday on charges of defacing public property, police said. The Aam Aadmi Party termed the case “politically motivated”.

The AAP activists – Rajesh Kumar, Gulshan, Deepak and Rajinder Kumar – are all aged between 20-30 years. They were booked under various sections of the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007.

The party claimed pasting posters was not a “crime”, and accused the BJP-led central government of using Delhi Police as a “puppet”.

Shooters Meena, Lajja fail to win medals

A lot was expected from Indian shooters Meena Kumari and Lajja Gauswami but they failed to earn a medal from the women’s 50-metre rifle prone finals at the Commonwealth Games here Monday.

On a day when all three Indian medals came from shooting, Meena and Lajja could only manage to finish sixth and 11th at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre.

New Zealander Sally Johnston took home the gold with a total of 620.7 points, closely followed by South Africa’s Esmari van Reenen at 620.1, who took silver. Local girl Jen Mcintosh clinched the bronze with a tally of 619.5 points.

BJP chief Amit Shah to visit Hyd next month

BJP president Amit Shah will visit Hyderabad during the second week of August and hold consultations with party leaders from Telangana on strengthening the organisation.

Shah would directly interact with the heads of village units of the party during his two-day visit; dates of which will be finalised in a couple of days, Telangana unit BJP president G Kishan Reddy told reporters here today.

The police action against Marathi-speaking people at Yellur in Karnataka has prompted protests by political parties in Maharashtra, with the Shiv Sena calling it as an act of “terror” and seeking Centre’s intervention in the “disputed” region.

“It is the reign of goondas. Even we can do this goondagiri but we won’t do that. We demand that the Centre immediately declare the border area in Karnataka where 20 lakh Marathi-speaking people live, as centrally administered region and appoint a central representative as administrator,” Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut told reporters.

Telangana CM invited to IIM alumni meet in Singapore

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has received an invitation to attend a meeting to be organised by the alumni of an IIM in Singapore.

Rao would attend the event on August 22-23 as a guest and address the ex-students of the IIM working in different countries, an official release said.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President S R Nathan would also attend the event, the release said.

Rao would stay in Singapore for two-three days and study the industrial policy of the country, it said.

Election for vacant MLC seat of AP on Aug 21

The Election Commission of India has announced the scheduled for election to the vacant MLC seat of Andhra Pradesh.

The seat fell vacant due to the resignation of Kolagatla Veerabhadra Swamy on May 21 this year. Therefore the MLAs of Andhra Pradesh will elect a new MLC through by-elections. The notification for the bye-elections will be issued on August 4 while the last date of filing nominations will be August 11. The ECI will scrutinise the nominations on August 12 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be August 14.

Crescent sighted, Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday

The Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday as the crescent of Holy Shavval has been sighted on Monday night.

This was announced by a team of noted Islamic Scholars under the aegis of the Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee – Hyderabad Deccan. The Committee which met at the Hussaini Building at Moazzam Jahi Market on Monday evening, made the announcement after getting confirmation from all the districts and neighbouring States, that the crescent has been sighted. Therefore, the Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Tuesday.

Ian Bell’s unbeaten century took England to 452/5 at tea against India on Day 2 of the third Test at the Rose Bowl here Monday.

There was some respite for Indian bowlers, who removed Joe Root (3) and Moeen Ali (12) cheaply but failed to make further inroads as Bell (133 not out) and debutant Jos Buttler (13 not out) stood strong.

Bell was much more aggressive in the session and took on the Indian spinners. The 32-year-old notched up his 21st Test century with a six and ended up smashing Ravindra Jadeja for 21 runs in that over.

Two minor sisters washed away in Himachal rivulet

Two minor sisters were Monday washed away in a swollen rivulet in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, police said.

Komal (9) and Nazia (7), daughters of Rajdeen of Harnota village, drowned in the rivulet in Thoda panchayat area, some 300 km from state capital Shimla.

Police said seeing the girls cry for help, villagers rushed to the spot but failed to save them. A case has been registered.

The state has been experiencing moderate to heavy rain for the past several days. More rain is in store, the Met office said.

Puja eliminated, says next step could be Bollywood

TV actress Puja Banerjee, known for playing Parvati in the mythological show “Devon Ke Dev Mahadev”, has been eliminated from “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7”. She is disappointed and feels that she “deserved to go up the finals”.

Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Tuesday as the new moon was sighted Monday in most parts of the country.

The weather in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana was cloudy but Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee or moon sighting committee announced that since the moon was sighted in many parts of the country, Eid will be celebrated Tuesday.
