Syria”s key oil fields reportedly seized by ISIS Karachi, July 4 (ANI): The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has revealed that the Islamic State of Iraq and Al Sham (ISIS), now called Islamic State (IS), has established a firm control over most oil fields in Syria. According to the Dawn, all main oil and gas fields in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor are now fully controlled by the IS including, Tanak and Al-Omar oil refineries among others. The rebel group has already declared a caliphate in all the areas under its control in Iraq and Syria.

Indian nurses free, to return Saturday

The Indian nurses in Iraq are now free and the “process” to bring them back home has begun, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said here.

“The nurses have been set free and are on their way to Erbil,” Akbauddin said.

“The 46 nurses will move to Erbil tonight. As we talk now, an Air India plane has taken off. It is expected to reach tonight,” he added.

“A joint secretary level officer is there on the flight,” Akbaruddin said.

Along with the nurses, the flight will bring back nearly 70 other Indians.

Pak officials say military offensive displaces over 5,72,000

Over 5,72,000 people have been displaced in Pakistan military’s offensive against Taliban in the restive North Waziristan province, an official said today.

“The number of displaced people registered so far is 5,72,5295. They belong to 44,600 families,” Commissioner of Bannu Syed Mohsin Ali said.

He said government has set up special registration point for these people.

The government is providing help in a well-organised manner to the main city of Bannu where displaced are being kept, Ali added.

68 jailed in China’s largest online gambling case

Sixty-eight people in south China’s Guangdong province have been given jail terms ranging from one year and five months to nine years in the country’s largest online gambling case, a local court said Friday.

The gambling ring illegally opened online casinos and attracted bets valued at 484 billion yuan ($78 billion) from March 2008 to April 2013, Xinhua reported citing a statement of the Liwan district people’s court in the provincial capital Guangzhou.

The court Thursday ordered the 68 to pay fines ranging from 50,000 yuan to 20 million yuan.

NoW’s Andy Coulson jailed for phone hacking

Andy Coulson, ex-editor of the now defunct News of the World (NoW) newspaper, was sentenced to 18 months in jail Friday for conspiracy to hack phones, BBC reported.

The 46-year-old, who went on to become director of communications for British Prime Minister David Cameron, was found guilty last week at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales.

HC notice on wife’s plea for CBI probe into husband’s death

The Delhi High Court Friday issued notice to the home ministry and the Delhi Police commissioner on a plea filed by a woman for a CBI inquiry into the death of her husband, who was allegedly abducted and killed by eight policemen.

Justice Mukta Gupta also issued notice to then station house officer (SHO) of Bindapur police station and sought their response by Oct 27 on the plea that sought a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the death of businessman Manoj Rana and Rs.10 lakh compensation.

Bengal plans tie-up with London cerebral palsy institute

In a bid to boost healthcare facilities for children with developmental disorders, the West Bengal government is planning to set up a centre of excellence here in collaboration with London School for Children with Cerebral Palsy, sources said Friday.

The project, expected to take off in the next financial year, would come up on the campus of the B.C. Roy Memorial Hospital for Children at Narkeldanga in the eastern part of the city.

Man dies in jail custody, family members block road

A 28-year-old man arrested for illegally possession of drug died in custody of the Phagwara sub-jail here, following which his family members and relatives blocked the National Highway-1 claiming foul play, prompting the authorities to order a probe into the matter.

Gurprees Singh alias Gopi (28) died at the sub-jail last night. Police claimed that after his sugar level suddenly fell, he was rushed to the government hospital where he died.

Syrian army retakes industrial city in Aleppo province

The Syrian army has recaptured an industrial city in the northern province of Aleppo, a media report said Friday.

The troops recaptured the city late Thursday in the Sheikh Najjar area on the eastern outskirts of Aleppo city after clashes with the militant group, Nusra Front, Xinhua reported.

The army is also advancing into other areas in Sheikh Najjar as rebels withdrew from that part of the city.

According to officials, Syrian forces carried out more than 20 airstrikes against the city to dislodge the rebels.

The leaders of the US and Germany have voiced support for a “sustainable” ceasefire in eastern Ukraine through diplomatic means, and threatened additional sanctions should Russia fail to take immediate deescalation steps.

44 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

About 44 Taliban militants have been killed in a series of military operations in Afghanistan since early Thursday, said the country’s interior ministry Friday morning.

“Over the past 24 hours, the Afghan police, army and intelligence agency carried out clean-up operations in Nangarhar, Kunduz, Logar, Paktiya and Helmand provinces, killing 44 armed Taliban insurgents, wounding six militants and detaining four others,” Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement providing daily operational updates.

US opposed to Kurds breaking away from Iraq

The US has opposed a call for a referendum on independence for Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region.

The call from Massud Barzani, president of the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, came as Sunni militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) are continuing their offensive after seizing a large part of Iraq’s northern and western territories and declaring the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in areas under their control in both Iraq and Syria.

CRPF officer killed in Maoist attack in Bihar

A CRPF officer was killed Friday in a Maoist attack in
Bihar’s Jamui district, police said.

Deputy commandant of CRPF’s seventh battalion H.N. Jha was killed in the attack. “Jha died on the spot after bullet hit his head,” district police officer Ram Nath Tiwari said.

The attack took place near Khaira forest in Jamui when a team of Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF) troopers was patrolling the area.

The CRPF team arrested four Maoist guerrillas including a woman after the incident and seized arms and ammunition.

The basket of 12 crude oils of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) stood at $107.17 a barrel Thursday, against $108.35 Wednesday, according to OPEC Secretariat calculations.

The new OPEC reference basket comprises Saharan Blend (Algeria), Girassol (Angola), Oriente (Ecuador), Iran Heavy (Iran), Basra Light (Iraq), Kuwait Export (Kuwait), Es Sider (Libya), Bonny Light (Nigeria), Qatar Marine (Qatar), Arab Light (Saudi Arabia), Murban (United Arab Emirates) and Merey (Venezuela). A barrel equals 159 litres.

Polio vaccinators beaten up in Pakistan

Two polio vaccinators were beaten up Friday in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

According to officials, unknown attackers in Khairpur district beat up the members of the polio vaccine team with sticks, Dawn Online reported.

Last week, four new polio cases were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and North Waziristan.

The number of polio cases detected in Pakistan this year has risen to 88.

An official from the ministry of national health services said the only way to curb the disease was to announce a “polio emergency”.

NASA, Boeing to develop most powerful rocket for Mars

In what could be billed as a step to build the most powerful rocket to take astronauts to Mars, NASA has finalised a $2.8 billion contract with Houston-headquartered Boeing Space Exploration to develop its prestigious Space Launch System (SLS).

The six-and-a-half-year SLS contract runs through 2021 and calls for Boeing to deliver two SLS cores – including hydrogen and oxygen tanks – and avionics.
